Are you kidding? This is a technician's dream. You'll work for a company that can't sell you, downsize you, or fire you. You'll make more than you are worth, plus never have to show any "real" results.
Who wouldn't want to work for the government?
Spambots in outlook? Contact grabbers? Sounds like you've been downloading too much *.exe pr0n on kazaa my friend. Outlook works fine and does not contain any of those things by default. That is of course you are using IE and then they get installed automagicly when you install that nifty supercool waterfall screensaver.
Granted I don't use outlook anymore, but it's not because of any of the things you mentioned. I just much prefer the thunderbird client because it has built in RSS.
I beg to differ. I regularly download copyrighted materials via bittorrent. Why? Because I don't like going to 12 diffrent stores to find a game that came out, then pay 60 bucks for it, and then feel like I lost not only my money, but my time as well. This is for applications and games. I'd gladly pay for movie downloads rather than having to go to the video store.. Same with TV episodes. I'd rather pay to download them, and watch them over and over again, or watch them when I want to watch them instead of when the tv exec's think is the best time.
Obviously people will pay to download information, otherwise iTunes, Napster, etc would not be making money would they?
That's exactly what I thought.. But knowing them, they already have a pirated copy, and are designing thier own squirells with big racks and big sacks.
Some of the more lonely memebers may actually be trying to design a girl what would date them. The dissapointment might be worth it in this case.
So what are you doing to help it? It's still going on, has been for months.. What's the UN doing about it? Nadda, zilch, zip.. I think you talk a good talk, but when it comes down to it, you'd rather just let all the poorer nations of the world starve and kill themselves. Instead of directing hatred to the US, do something usefull and put all that energy into helping the less fortunate. The sudan being a good example.. Rawanda? How about the tsunami victims?
You act as if the US does nothing good in this world, I think you are mistaken.
And if you didn't think it was going on beforehand then you sir are blinded by your own hatred. The fact of the matter is that in war bad things happen. In peacetime bad things happen. This is not new or unique to the US.. The real issue here is that our unique stance on freedom of press does not allow the government to sanitize the media as it does in other countries.
I in turn say that there is much more blood on the hands of those who did nothing while watching Saddam gassing his own people, and at the same time being paid large sums of money via the "Oil for food" farce. I'm not saying the US is without fault. We aren't perfect, but then no country will ever be.
Only on Slashdot can a story about CPU heatsinks be turned into a flame against the US.
As an American, I feel you should just get over your jealosy and just eat my hairy ass. The people who have committed such acts, or approved of them should be punished. That doesn't mean the entire country as a whole is bad. And just because I think you are a narrowminded nitwit doesn't mean I think your entire country is..
I'd rather have a low-cost full featured Athlon XP, than a low-cost neutered P4. And for the price, I can now get a 64 bit processor cheaper than the 32bit processor that Intel charges for.
Intel lost a long time ago.. They just don't know it yet.
As for cyrix, I had 1.. it was a POS to start with, they didn't win any performance wars.. I had a 266 mhz cyrix that my p90 beat the pants off of.
How about overzealous AOL admins who block every mailserver who doesn't have a PTR record set? Granted it's something everyone should do if they are hosting thier own mailserver, but it's still kind of a pain in the ass. Especially in my case where I had to wait several months because of my ISP and the company who hosts my domain not playing well together.
If spam is comming from AOL mailservers, then they deserve to be put on the blocklist. End of story. It's not like you can't remove yourself once you fix the problem.
How many other companies do this? Several.. Take a look at a fileforum list of releases. 90% of them are shareware which is labeled as "Alpha" "Beta" or "RC1, RC2, RC3". Microsoft is just following in the footsteps of so many other software developers.. Hell take a look at games.. When was the last time anyone played a game that didn't require a patch as soon as you got it installed?
I think what they are getting at here is the time it takes to restore the data. Rather than taking the time to restore from a tape which is very time consuming, it images to a hard drive. That drive can simply just be plugged in when the machine is down for the drive replacement. As opposed to taking down the system, replacing the drive, reloading the OS, installing the backup software, restoring the data, verifying it's integrity...
It's not linux software, it's "Open Source". There's nothing wrong with Open Source software being cross-platform.
I think you are looking at this wrong. People should be porting this stuff left and right, why? Because the more open source, cross platform apps a person uses will decrease the dependancy on windows. And as a person learns that he/she can use the applications on linux, and not have to pay MS for it's OS, then people will be more likely to switch.
It makes me laugh that people who want to spread the love of FOSS and Gnu/Linux want to do it only on their terms. "Times are a changin, repent or die! Linux is teh new god!!"
Yes, but the oil companies are not run by fools or idiots, unfortunately. Why do you think they staged a coup d'etat in the United States in 2000, and possibly again in 2004?
Get over it.. You lost, twice. Not because GW was an oil baron, or because the oil companies backed him. You lost because you chose poorly. Your candidate was and still is a sorry excuse for a politician, let alone a president.
Also, the president you are so fondly eluding to here is often called a fool or an idiot. Which is he, a smart rich oil baron or the foolhardy moron who can't figure out how to tie his left shoe?
Sane public policy would have us moving away from oil (and not cancelling vialbe programs that would have given us tangible results in three to five years, and replacing them with grandios programs that probably won't deliver in ten to fifteen years.
... said programs of course to be cancelled and replaced again a couple of years before delivery with something else, rinse, wash, and repeat until the oil reserves have gone completely dry). That is something the oil plutocrats simply cannot abide, and, having seized control of the United States government, will not allow.
Which is totaly unlike mediscare, farm subsidies, or the hundreds of other programs which never deliver what they are promised to.
So no, we won't be joining Kyoto anytime soon. Sorry, folks.
Damn right we're not! Not everything that is drawn up by world wide politicians is good.
It may mortify me personally as an American to see what my government is doing, but as the odds of my vote even counting continue to decline I don't see much I can do about it, except gripe here on slashdot and send letters for my representatives to ignore.
Just because you lost does not mean you're vote doesn't count. Stop wallowing in self pitty and suck it up.
Let's take a look at what IS out there: The Doom series, the Quake series, RTCW and Enemy Territory, Tribes 2, Neverwinter Nights, Tux Racer.. The list goes on, but there still has yet to be a MMORPG (that works well) for linux. Untill I can play DAOC, SWG, Evercrack, etc natively on linux I will not switch. Most devs nowdays are focusing on DirectX compatibility and not opengl. I personally feel that opengl is superior in the terms of speed, but lacks the stability and ease of implementation of directx.

If.. only I had mod points..
omg teh funnay! ;)
It made me smile at least.
I have a bad feeling about this...

How about we just agree to dissagree.. The horse has been long dead, and we are still standing over it with clubs.

I assume by viable you refer to biodisel and hybrid engines, things of that nature. These are all good ideas, but they also create other problems too. Like tax collections to pay for the roadways you drive on.
Which is totaly unlike mediscare, farm subsidies, or the hundreds of other programs which never deliver what they are promised to.

Already done.. Isn't it called fark.com?
