Actually, I was on Digg over a year ago and it was a great tech news site. It's popularity has now killed it, with spammers submitting so many stories and comments that I don't pay much attention any more. Once a site reaches a critical mass, it's only good for advertising as everyone tries to game the system for their financial benefit. I've been coming to slashdot since 97, and the same is true. Same with Google search results. No where near as good as they used to be.

You mean the roads the utility workers use to keep the data pipes flowing? What about the company he telecommutes to? I'm sure they benefit from the infrastructure in the state paid for by taxes, and thus he benefits by having a job with said company. I'm not sure about those states, but in Wisconsin (where I live) and Minnesota (where I work) the schools are paid for (mostly) through property taxes. While taxes go to so many numskull causes I can't count, he does benefit. And while I don't support double taxation, I see their point.

What there needs to be is a simpler tax code. My idea is this. Any hours he spends telecommuting or in the other states should be added up. Lets say 40 in a week. There are 168 total hours in a week. Thus he spends 23.8% of his time in the other state, and 23.8% of his taxes should go to that state. The rest goes to the state in which he resides. But I'm sure my idea is full of holes. And if it is a good idea, we know the government will never run with it. Just my thoughts on the matter.

First, lets clarify one thing. Norm Coleman was selected by Dubya to run for the Senate in Minnesota. In other words, he's GWs bitch boy.

Second, I don't have all of the facts at my fingertips (I have better things to do with my time), but there were individuals that have taken bribes. One was a Portuguese person (name slips my mind), who took about $105K in 2001. Coleman asked Annan to strip his diplomatic immunity so he could be prosecuted. Annan refused, and has been stonewalling the investigation since. This is just one example. See how many links you get when you google Oil for Food.

When people talk about the UN being corrupt and unaccountable, these are the kind actions they are referring to. In the past, it hasn't mattered, because they didn't have much power. In the future, UN reform top-down is going to be a major international issue and the greatest pissing contest ever!

While I agree that ethics are involved in all areas of life, especially science, I think you miss a key point. Embryonic stem cells are harvested from embryos that are left overs from in-vitro procedures and would normally be thrown away. Perhaps the poster doesn't view these as life, and therefore wouldn't have any ethical dilema about using them to cure disease.

I, for one, prefer the method of forced abortion on women to collect stem cells. It has the added benefit of curbing population growth.

Do you realize the US trade deficit with China is larger than that of any other nation? And that the health of the US economy is VERY directly proportional to the health of Chinas economy. The US could sanction China, and survive, but it would be pretty for neither, in the short term. In the short term, the entity that would suffer the most is Wal-Mart with 70% of their products originating from China. In the long term, both countries would survive and most likely be more powerful then before.
