But that it's scope is way too limit to warrent a political party.
I mean, i support a lot of what they lobby for, but I'd much rather vote for a party which also supports my ideas on a whole range of other issues. This goes in particular in an election that's been running so close as the swedish one did this time.
Single issue parties, should really stop being parties, and start doing some serious lobbying instead. I do understand that they're doing it, since i realize it can be very hard for young people to be heard by politicians on new and controversial ideas on an old subject.
I hope noone ever gets voted into parliament anywhere based on such a narrow issue, I really feel it would be a double loss for democracy, the first because it should never be the only way to be taken serious, and the second, because once they get in, you'll have no clue on how they vote for issues that are very important to all of us.
you're absolutely right, the reason i might be a bit biased and make it sound trivial (i tried not to) is that i'm used to working with high end medium format cameras, due to the fact that i work as a test engineer at Phase One (we make 40.000 digital backs), but as part of the software test suites, i cameras from other vendors as well. (i'm basically writing this to shout out "I have fun with pricey toys for a living")
Anyway, most of the companies listed on flickr will have new cameras coming out within the next couple of months (like the eos 400), so if you're looking to buy a new camera, just hold your horses, since the current models will all drop in price by christmas:).
yes i know they do constantly, but it's a new version drop, not the current steady price decline.
grr. lack of editing capabilities... (adding the number 3)
Actually not entirely true, the digital rebel is the EOS 300d, not the 350d, the 350d is the digital rebel xt.
There's a fast comparison of those two at dcresource
Basically 350 has a few improvements, it has more internal memory (hence 14 instead 3 of shot bursts), it has usb 2.0 instead of 1.1, its just under 15% lighter and has a better battery, iaacte (i am a camera test engineer (at Phase One)).
oh well, my own bloody fault for not reading the preview thoroughly

They've realized that they've spend most of the budget and need to start cashing in now. So Spore will be released for the biggest market first, and they'll focus mostly on that, until they have recovered some of their expenses. Then it'll come to the other markets.
So my guess is that spore will be released faster for pc, but might be slightly overpriced.
This will probably mean they will lower prices faster than a simultanous launch (not necessarily true) and that the other targets will be slightly lower priced than their first expectations.
First off, the main difference is, that you see your character as a trophy of your achievement, i see mine as a tool for having fun.
Secondly, you seem to think im referring to the particular game that you're playing, which i don't even know which one is.
I admit that i might've been a bit carried away in my reply to your first post and have overlooked that you were being very specific.
Thirdly you make the mistake of assuming that spending money on something is not a commitment. You're wrong, it is!
I will agree on one aspect though, the person paying for the character wouldn't have your experience, and it would be nice if there was some other way this was visible. The previous generation of persistant multiplayer games did make time spend and similar things visible
Seriously, quit being angry about it, just because i go out and flaunt my new Hasselblad H1 with a p45 Phase One back doesn't mean professional photographers get angry with me, they might laugh at me for being unskilled and spending tens of thousands without proper training.
You misunderstood me about one point (i didn't make it very clear), I don't it's alright to trade in characters if you've signed (or otherwise accepted) a contract not to. I just think that it's a stupid clause to have.
What part of "If a game is made so that one strategy dominates the others, then the game is already flawed, please read about game theory."
makes you say "It's called "cheating" for a reason."?
This is actually pretty central. A game is not fun if one strategy (or playstyle) dominates the others, If you think there is one optimal superbuild for your character, then either You're wrong or the game will always suck, even if the people you don't like leave.
just to rephrase this, a game is not fun if there's only one best way of doing things.
"But you can't abide by the rules and design of the game, unlike everyone else. All your subscription entitles you to is access, nothing more, no right to dictate the terms as you see fit, especially when the vast majority of other players are quite content with the terms of access and what you ask for would detract from their own enjoyment."
This has to go both ways.
"Please understand there are other games."
Please, please, please read some computer game theory about the different types of players and how they interact, how there can be a balance between them and how they can improve gameplay for eachother. If you think the game will be fun if only those who play it in your own style will like it, I suggest you play single player games, or only coop with your closest friends. I honestly think that will be more fun for you, possibly something like diablo 2 and playing only on password protected servers.
"Essentially yes, you did. You don't care about game balance, you don't care about the enjoyment of other players, you would ruin both just so that your character can have some unjustified bling. Your entire post is about how everything should be all about you and what you want and how everybody should cater to your tastes, even to their own detriment and even though you amount to nothing much more than a lone voice in the wilderness in your MMORPG of choice."
I feel that you assume I'm an asshat and an idiot, only out to ruin the fun of others, steal their time and make them miserable. I'm not.
I'm not asking everyone to do as i want them to, merely to allow me to play the way I want. If Elder Scrolls: Oblivion was an mmorg, i'd be happy to pay someone (including the people running it) to max my alchemy skill, it's one of those things i find fun to play with, and i refuse to think that me playing around with alchemy ruins the game for others. What i wouldn't do was buy x amount of various ingredients, because i think gathering them is one of the fun things. I know others would prefer doing it the other way around, or all by themselves, and i'd be fine with them doing that.
"How much enjoyment could you have with what is essentially somebody else's high-level character? A good deal of the enjoyment of having such a character is remembering the effort it took" If it's made according to how you wanted the character made, You paid for it, it's yours.
"... then quit the game." There ARE aspects of the game payers like, why not just let them play those parts? Their subscriptions help pay improvement of the aspects you like, just as much as yours does
"[Your argument is] nothing in the game should require any effort to acquire" No, my argument is nothing in the game should be a boring to acquire.
"You'd have a game full of Paris Hiltons" If a game is made so that one strategy dominates the others, then the game is already flawed, please read about game theory.
"You're assuming that everybody would be equally satisfied with instant gratification" No I'm not, i actually state that if people prefer the adventure of getting the item through adventure, they should have the choice! I'm just not assuming that everyone plays the game to achieve. Personally I'm an explorer/killer as gamer. From what i read about you, you're mainly an achiever/socializer(nothing wrong with that) but please try to understand the other types of players.
"Then play a different game." But I love pvp in this game and I pay my subscription like everyone else.
"Does the term..." You failed to detect sarcasm, I'm sorry that's partly my fault.
"Oh, I already know. "The world owes me." You said that, I didn't:)
Powerlevelling is good, because it lets people play the part of the game they enjoy, and that's what gaming is all about.
I know some people don't like it, they say that people don't work to get their character to level 60 or whatever is max. I say that's a lie, i say people choose to work at their job, instead of doing what many consider a chore (ingame) to get those stats.
If you have 3 friends playing WoW and they're all maxxed out, but because you just started in a lawfirm, it'll take you half a year to get there, or it'll take you half a days paycheck to be able to play with your friends, I know, what I'd choose.
And as many people have already pointed out, they can't buy skill anyway, so why on earth are you whining about it? powerlevelling is the only way people with jobs can stay in the competition.
This on the other hand can be used by any gamer before joining up on an mmorg: You should look at what people offer on ebay, there you will see which parts of the game that are boring. Nothing in game would be for sale unless it's either difficult to get or boring to get. If enough people want something which is obtainable there will be a market for it. Nobody wants boredom, so it feels unfair when others can buy their way around it, but you didn't do it.
i foresee games where everything is for sale for real (possibly also ingame) currency. When you realize you only need that one crystal to finish your monolithic spaceship of doom, you pull out a menu, and purchase it, without ever leaving the game OR you decide to spend 5 days getting to chasing your goal if you like to go adventuring for stuff, either way it will mean that people can play the game as they want to.
Second life is already doing this to some extent, although in many ways i'm not sure whether to call it a game. I foresee much more of this, including games where it's much easier to do product placement and the likes, if can live with that, you save 2$ a week.
I must admit, i myself am somewhat annoyed with char building, there's a reason i refer to it as grinding, i'm sure you know the term. I love doing pk (or pvp if you want) because that's the place where you're facing human adversaries. It is also my experience, from various games, that killing mobiles is not proper preperation for fighting players, although it can help getting group fighting tightened up.
from a foreign aid point of view, this is one of the ways you'll be able to give money directly to the poor people of poor nations. Don't be mislead, those are the people working the sweatshops. The only big problem I see, is that people don't make requirements to those they buy services from, i guess i'd prefer to buy my chars Max Havelaar style.'
anyways, i'm heading off topic, cyas and i hope you'll think about why it is people will pay to avoid parts of a game.
We're at war with the Soviets^D^DTerrorists...
And we just has a glorious victory !
next up the 20 minutes of hate?
then back to work, business as usual..
We don't even need a war, just the illusion of one, thank you minitrue for real and complete reports of whats going on, and thank you miniplenty for lowering the oil prices to a historic low of 20$ pr gallon...
the current war on terror is quite like the war in 1984. Where the main purpose of the war was not to capture territories or resources, but rather to reduce the freedoms of the populaces.
after the liberation of iraq, iraqies gained some and lost some, but people of the eu and us lost freedom.
This victory will no doubt show that our forces are good and fine and great, and with more funding they'd be even better.
now they have tightened airport security, most notably by requiring all carryons to be carried in clear plastic bags.
They're no doubt already discussing how to make security even better, as we speak.
I'm not saying terrorism isn't real, but it's certainly been boosted since we started taking it seriously.
I'm not saying the government is trying to take away your freedoms, but I do think they're forgetting what it is the silverware of civilisation that they're remoulding to shoot werewolves (monsters none of us really know much about).
The governments are more worried about the deaths of a max. 5000 citizens the last five years, than meeting the big challenges we're facing (reducing bureaucracy, informing the intolerant, helping developing countries, improving pluralistic democracy, increasing education levels, getting humans to think)
So what if they kill a few of us, including some leaders, democracy is strong because it is NOT dependant on one person, but when too few cares, it becomes a defacto oligarchy.
Having seen some of the research that goes on, voice recognition is still far from good. Yes it works in some contexts, especially if it's been trained with the person speaking, and the language is limited, such as in a professional environment.
but for home computers, it's not only overkill it's also inadequate and non-functional. I say COOL feature, but hopeless waste of time and money, which in the end will be paid by you-know-who (not ms)
on another topic can someone please ask ms to stop the increasing and excessive stream of bundling?
If you completely disregard the part of my post past the first line, then i guess you have a valid point.
The thing is, that i perfectly clearly state that I don't consider going to 100 km (or 62 miles) to be going to space, because nothing orbits that low.
An orbital rocket that's launched from underbelly of a fighterjet is a warhead, not a spacecraft. I don't consider a bullet to be an aeroplane either.
The only spacecraft EVER which have NOT been vtol are the shuttles, the russion ones are retired and dead and the american ones have had their share of problems lately.
While the news of how they intend to do this, i think as someone stated above me, the real question is whether you can call it a spaceshuttle when it's only designed to go to weightlessness and return. Yes it gives a spacelike feeling, but it's not useful for putting up satelites, not possible to go to spacestations with it, from my point of view, it's just a step up from a parabolic flight, but it's not more a spacecraft, than a tow ferry is a ship.
You don't have to do anything activily to have copyrights.
It's something you attain when you produce it, not by filling in an application.
applications (not computer) are for trademarks and patents.
Hmm, the article was surprisingly good. I didn't agree with the first claim, probably because i prefer multiplayer games, nor the last, because i don't believe realism is always the best choice. But the rest of the article was very objective, so to sum it up:
Spread gamefeatures throughout the game, instead of all at once.
Don't change rules, to make experience obselete in end game.
If you do localization, don't do it half-assed.
Provide subtitles.
Don't obfuscate the interface.
Save those configs.
Keep options/config available whenever possible.
Obey the laws of physics (i don't entirely agree with this one).
This is just another of those articles that claims Apple is safer, because it's less of a target. It reads the new updated statistics about the problems of ms windows, and clichés it's way to declaring apple fairly safe. this article does admit apple has security flaws, but does not extend it beyond that.
In short, the article doesn't do much to bring perspective, or depth to an already longwinded debate. In my opinion, changing to apple because it's less of a target is comparable security through obscurity.
Real security comes through proper training of administrators and users. Real security does not come with the operating system
You're free to do that if you write proprietary code as well. what you, and other people do with your/their own code, has nothing to do with licenses, since you do own the rights to material you produce yourself.
regarding the WMP-free version of windows. The reason noone got that version was that microsoft did not charge LESS for it, as i remember they originally wanted to charge MORE for it (can't be bothered to reference, so don't get hung up on it). So in effect, you could choose not to have it bundled, but it wouldn't save you a dime. Because the price wasn't better, no OEM or VAR decided to bundle WMP-free windows with the pc's they made.
The amazing thing is that we can't really refute what chuckshot is saying.
Yes a lot of things point that direction. In fact, the more we find out, the more is found to point to a global & total information awareness scheme.
What i do find scary is not that it's possible, but that the best argument found against it currently is, They wouldn't do something like that - would they?
If we want a free world, we need to free it, it is not free untill there are noone who are not free. You are not free untill the rest of the world is, either you're opressing, being oppresed, or being ignorant; being ignorant is counterproductive of freedom. If you're free you still have responsibility, responsibility limits freedom, but responsibility is preferable to oppression, ignorance will either lead to you or someone else being oppressed. Politics are politics, most are just in it for the ride and spin-offs, I greatly suspect many even top leaders to be so, if you don't get rid of those, they'll be spinning off you. If you want to make a difference, do something activily about your opinions, if you spend more than half an hour a month on such your political views, you're doing more than most of the other sheep of humanity. If you want to make a difference, just keep arguing, the fact that people like jack thompson gets listened to is due to the fact that he does the ground work to get heard.
If you you publicly speak out your opninons, some people will think you're crazy, but at least you'll be heard. The promise of being heard is what I think pluralistic democracy is truly about.
because i know how annoying it will be to me, that I haven't finished and i'm unable to continue. With my mindframe it'll be much better to wait untill the last installment, and then maybe a bit more untill they lower the price.
Games, music, video most are way too expensive considering the price of their distribution and the size of the potential customerbase.
what interests me is to see how long it takes for the new distribution technologies to take their effect on prices. On a side note The time it takes also shows a great deal about the competition in the entertainment market. Since if there really was competition, at least some of the playeres would be using these technologies to gain a market advantage. Valve are the first to do this with great success due to steam, but once other companies start competing, i hope for prices to drop.
Ack, i can only say that my experience with robotics tells me that it's hopeless to trust just one sensor, when dealing with a robot. I far too well remember spending countless of hours before realizing, that when i got too close, or too far away, the sensor would start reporting its result wrongly; it couldn't tell the difference between 2 cm, 30 cm, and 4 m. creating a function to help it realize what it had done, based on previous measurements helped, but was still a bad solution. getting extra sensors, that had different range problems solved it. The point being, ARRRR ROBOTS! don't trust anything they tell you, and don't trust their programming, especially if you coded it yourself. That being said, working with robots is fun, and if you haven't tried it, you should.
So for those of you who did the same.
This system works in multiple ways, it has an ionisation pulse that travels along the water lines
The pulse ionizes the water the ionized water is dragged by the pulse
the pulse alters the shape of a small membrane, boosting the pump.
as for the efficiency
We have shown that the power input required is in the microwatts, but you can get milliwatts of cooling
that being said, it's still work in progress, and they (according to the article) haven't solved leakage problems yet.
It's rather funny that women are playing with bricks and logic, while men are playing with dolls and avatars

So what if they kill a few of us, including some leaders, democracy is strong because it is NOT dependant on one person, but when too few cares, it becomes a defacto oligarchy.Having seen some of the research that goes on, voice recognition is still far from good.
:)
PS. i wish i had one
You don't have to do anything activily to have copyrights. It's something you attain when you produce it, not by filling in an application. applications (not computer) are for trademarks and patents.
I didn't agree with the first claim, probably because i prefer multiplayer games, nor the last, because i don't believe realism is always the best choice. But the rest of the article was very objective, so to sum it up:
That i can respect Avril Lavigne, for not being stupid.
Way to go girl!
This system works in multiple ways, it has an ionisation pulse that travels along the water lines
The pulse ionizes the water the ionized water is dragged by the pulse
the pulse alters the shape of a small membrane, boosting the pump.
as for the efficiency that being said, it's still work in progress, and they (according to the article) haven't solved leakage problems yet.
