Ok, maybe I should have taken my vitamins this morning. What I meant to say was: I agree that there's no use case for biometrics in my proposal or in the original arrangement. The rest of it was in reference to the original arrangement, where I think biometrics are overkill.
Yeah, that would work too. I don't see any use case where biometrics are necessary, if it isn't essential that exactly that particular kid and nobody else is to use a service. But this is elementary school, so I'm sure the kindergarten teacher or whoever will be able to vouch for a kid if the lunch lady decides to go to defcon 2 because the kid has no arms or something.
Dude, no. What I'm suggesting is that Google could partner with a bunch of restaurants, where Google would pay for the orders made by people, and collect the data. Then the companies could subscribe to the entire data pool from google, and get valuable consumer information. Kids get free lunches, companies get data, and google gets revenue.
It just occurred to me that this kind of thing would provide useful data to fast food companies, if used in the general population. Imagine something like "Google Lunch", which would provide a free meal to people who swipe their thumb. One would think that the data on where, what, and when people prefer to eat would be worth some serious money to those companies.
I haven't hit that problem yet, but I think they could do a better job with the auxiliary content on the site. For example, This is what I get for "Related Links", at the bottom of the page:
- Independent Researchers Test Rossi's Alleged Cold Fusion Device For 32 Days
- Man Booted From Southwest Flight and Threatened With Arrest After Critical Tweet
- Russian Military Forces Have Now Invaded Ukraine
- Professor: Young People Are "Lost Generation" Who Can No Longer Fix Gadgets
- Oregon Testing Pay-Per-Mile Driving Fee To Replace Gas Tax.
I have no idea what their criteria is for "related". Also, there used to be a "post" button at the bottom of the page; now I have to scroll all the way back up to the top to post.
Personally, I am of the opinion that there is really only one AC on slashdot. I know lots of people here, and they're all pretty nice and smart. Ergo, there can only be one exception, namely the one that proves the rule.
There is no good reason to pay a good negotiator more than a bad, except if you want to hire someone for a position where you need negotiation skills.
There is, if you want that particular person to work at your company. Since they are so good at negotiation, they can probably convince some other company, such as one of your competitors, to pay them what they want, if you don't want to.
So the summary says that this thing targets porn watchers specifically, but I couldn't find any stats on what percentage of the total net population that is. Does anyone have any data?
I read some science fiction once, where the people in power did something like this, then nuked the entire world so they could start over from scratch, with their frozen samples. Just how delusional is Putin anyway?
I didn't know a person could become gay-tainted after they die if their successor is gay. Hope the next person to have my job after I die isn't gay, otherwise my tombstone might set off someone's gaydar. that would be embarrassing.
Ok, fair enough. Definitely a social issue. I think part of the problem is that we overestimate the extent of what we think of as our community. I've lived in small towns, where everyone knew everyone else, and there was always a sense of trust and connection within the community. You could go to a bar and have a beer with your friends without ever thinking that someone would do (in your group, or to your group) something nefarious. At the very least, everyone knew who the bad apples were. In big cities, people can be more isolated (often, people don't even talk to their neighbours), but we still behave like we're in a connected community. When we go out to a club, we extend that same trust to those around us, even though they are an unknown in the social equation.
The social issue I see here is that there's no consensus that we're all the same tribe, and therefore should have each other's back. There are people who see others as competition at best, and prey at worst. For them, a club is not an opportunity to make social connections and strengthen the tribe; it's a feeding ground. I guess one could also turn it around and see it from the other angle. There are people who see a predator in everyone, even when it's not the case. Either way, we're losing something valuable by inhibiting the development of these kinds of social bonds.

Hi Slashdot. In the tagline beneath the article title, I believe you meant to say "Brand GNU".

+1 Funny :D
Microsoft teams up with a vacuum cleaner company, to finally produce a product that doesn't suck. This stuff just writes itself.

Ya. That sounds like the right ballpark. BTW, your sig and mine are like two sides of the same coin.

Did you warn them?
I read some science fiction once, where the people in power did something like this, then nuked the entire world so they could start over from scratch, with their frozen samples. Just how delusional is Putin anyway?
Why so angry?
Guess I did miss it the first time. I read it as the AC trying to defend 10k somehow. Been a rough week.
Commercial jets typically cruise at 33000 to 40000 feet.
Air traffic controllers in Canada Use 2000x2000 pixel panels for the Canadian Automated Air Traffic System (CAATS); Pretty close.

It's the viral nature of the GPL.
If someone would pay for it, and build it right, I would let them build it in my house.
This is like the X Window Shape extension for hardware. When can I order a hardware copy of xeyes that creepily watch me as I move around my bedroom?
Lots of Ice melting. Could be that all the energy is going into phase change right now.

How about using the police?
