  2. Re:Expectation of Privacy on Canada Says Google Wi-Fi Sniffing Collected Personal Data · · Score: 1

Not to be nit picker, but its individuals VS Business. More specifically Personal Information VS Business information. Much depends on context as well, if you use your Personal Information in a Business context then it is no longer considered Personal Information and is exempt from the Act. The act itself is weighted in favor of the protection of personal privacy and the release of public information. There is some interpretation to the Act, and that is why there are commissioners, and they have a small army of adjudicators to issue orders or decisions on contentious issues. There are some problems with the Act as I see it, but they do a pretty good job, though orders can be pretty slow due to a back log of issues. The one big problem I see is the Act seems to be harder on small business than say large business (such as large corporations), that can say afford to hire an army of lawyers to make their arguments for them.

Many people I think are unaware of the Act or how powerful it really is. I hear about issues all the time, that if ever brought before a privacy commissioner would be shot down so fast it would make their head spin! Someone has to make an issue of it however before anything is done.

For instance I heard from someone about how if they were sick, they were obligated to provide their personal medical records to prove that they were sick (including x-rays, etc...). They had to sign a consent form to this effect at their job. From my own experience I would say that is BS. The employer has a right to know from your doctor if you were able to work or not, but the specifics of your medical history is none of their business. Requiring the consent of the release is sketchy as well. I think if this practice were ever brought forward, it would get destroyed. Anyway I am glad we have privacy laws, though the freedom of information part sometimes makes my job a big pain in the ass, as it can be abused pretty badly by the public.

  3. Hogwash! on Scientists Fight Back In Canada · · Score: 1

The conservatives aren't "anti-science", they just don't want to hear anything negative about the tarsands, erm I mean the oilsands, and they have a couple of crazy Ministers that don't want to be reminded how silly their creationism belief about the earth being 5000 years old and Fred Flintstone riding dino to work.

Apart from that, I bet they are real sciencey. Scary Sciencey!

Seriously though, like any political body that makes policy decisions weighted for the economy against the environment, they really don't want the voters to have that fact shoved in their faces every day. I will go so far to say to a limited extent I somewhat agree with them, in that the oilsands are important to Canada and should be developed. The key is not to be so short sighted that you only take into considerations the long term benefits and profits associated with the development and not the long term environmental cost (which will also have a dollar figure attached, look at past records). Many greens want to use the scientific ammo to torpedo any development, and the Conservatives are just trying to limit their influence. Problem is, do you trust them to do the right thing, and regulate the oilsands properly, and take the long view? The past has shown a poor track record. I think I would prefer scientists left alone, and to wage the public opinion war on their own merits. Besides, since when does any politician really care about facts, and scientific evidence anyway when trying to justify an argument or policy decision anyway!

  4. Dems the Breaks on Norwegian Day Traders Convicted For Manipulating Computer Trading System · · Score: 1

I would say that's the risk you take when you automate any process really. As soon as you let a computer take over making decisions based on some algorithm (that is either great or a POS) you are taking a risk.

The fault is not with the people taking advantage of a shitty algorithm that doesn't work properly, its the fault of trusting your decisions to a shitty algorithm that doesn't work properly.

Making your own decisions and living with them is part of the game. Or entrusting those decisions to a human, who hopefully doesn't do a crappy job, or you fire them. In a "real world" human perception would see this BS, and not fall for it. So much of the market is now dependent on these stupid machine traders it is scary. A computer will always be subject to being inflexible in this respect until we get to the point of AI, and then likely the stock market will be the least of our worries...

Is what they did ethical? Probably not. However I think the actual fault is not theirs, but the users of the automated system.

I think its a bit funny the fact that they expected "free" service from Google to catch people that expect getting a "free" service.

If I was Google I would be asking for a fee per, as well as a percentage.

They are basically asking for a filtering service which Limewire, Napster, etc... all said was basically impossible and impractical to implement (and that was in terms of only their piddly ass applications, not all internet everywhere). Google is saying "Sure we can do whatever you want us to do, but your paying for it", which I don't think is an unreasonable demand considering the request.

Some might say, well no its different because you are participating and showing such activities in video games. Again - Not real. What do you think the thousands of years of theatre and more recently movies are? Some sort of magic box to another dimension? Actors play (or pretend if you will) rolls, where actually quite commonly Nazi's, Taliban, and a whole host of others regularly get portrayed, and in many cases killed (but not for real... they really do get back up after the scene, you just can't see it!). Yes there are actual humans that play those roles and virtually die... Well some might argue those are professionals and not kids... In many cases they are kids, and holy shit we have a rating system for games, be a responsible parent and don't let your stupid rug rats play said game if they are too young, no matter how much they scream (and appreantly yell racial slurs from my experiance on xbox live).

Give me a break and go read a book. Or wait no you can't do that, because there are fictional people is books that occasionally die and are assoicated with one group or another. Best to stay clear of that altogether!

So in conclusion, please go to your nearest cave with your emergency earmuffs, dig a hole in the sand, and stuff said head into hole, you'll be much better off and so will the rest of the world.

Personally (as a Canadian) I loved the fact that in Counter Strike you could play the FLQ terrorist. I mean I don't care about the FLQ, but simply the fact that Canada is mentioned at all in a video game, and you can play that side, and the map is supposed to be in Canada, I thought was pretty cool.

Otherwise I will be waiting for the video game of canoeing and collecting beaver pelts etc... which I don't think will be a very good game. That or a historical RTS game of the war of 1812, where inexplicably the USA always seems to win...
