As a former University and College student the idea of either getting bend out of shape about the cost of publications is too funny.
Now I never went to the University of California, however if it is like any post secondary institution I have even known, they gouge their own students every freaking year on "publications", otherwise known as textbooks. Considering they come out with a new "addition" each year just so they can sell the bloody things again for 100$ a shot, they might as well be thought of a periodicals. The sad thing, apart from a few exceptions 95% of the textbooks content hasn't changed, sometimes in hundreds of years. I mean do the principles of Calculus change so much in a given year that a new 120-150$ textbook must be used each year?
Anyway I have zero pity and no empathy at all in this matter. Call it karma, or lack thereof. The only sad part about the story, is that likely they will just pass the cost onto the students anyway, who already are getting hosed.
If you really want to get philosophical one might argue that the purpose of law itself is to protect people.
I would seriously argue that law itself is usually pretty pure, but sometimes get corrupted by politics to achieve some end.
Given that many Lawyers go into Politics, you might say Lawyers are Jedi, while Politicians are the Sith. Corporations I guess would be the Trade Federations... working with the Sith to change the laws...
Sounds like a certain movie, too bad it sucked. Probably because Jar Jar doesn't fit in anywhere.
The Jedi are bound to a code of morality and justice and are trained in the use of the light side of the force but not the Dark side.
There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no death, there is the Force.
Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy.
Jedi use their powers to defend and to protect.
Jedi respect all life, in any form.
Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy.
Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training.
If all of that doesn't describe a Lawyer I am not sure what does. Try to keep in mind people that not all (in fact only a very small but highly visible) lawyers are ambulance chasing souless bastards, or greedy corporate shills. Most try to uphold the law as best they can and protect people. I have a bias in that my Dads a lawyer I suppose. However just like Jedi, there are both the dark and the light side of the force. I suppose some lawyers are very Sith like to be sure.
With the movies "The Road" and "The Book of Eli" out this year, I would love to see a movie made for "Fallout". I know I particularly liked the old timey theme and music. Ditto for Bioshock.
If WW2 showed us anything, it was people are capable of atrocities if ordered to do so. Read the book "Ordinary Men" (I think that was what it was called). Almost to a man, the excuse will be "I was ordered to do so, I was doing my duty".
If we took anything away from that war that was positive it was even within a strict command structure, one does not have to follow orders he believes to be illegal. I think you can also extend that to information. If you know of something that went on that you felt was illegal, I think you are OBLIGATED to report that information. I have no idea if this guy tried to use the usual channels of communication to report this incident, but I don't think it is a bit stretch that if he did, that the proof would "disappear" and he would be "reassigned". He may have felt he had NO choice but take the action he did, in good conscience.
Now, it is also reasonable to say if you refuse what you think is an illegal order, or release information in the way he did, there will be a price to pay. There would certainly be an military court decision, that would say one way or another, if you made the right choice. Likely regardless your life as a military professional would be over no matter what, a sad, but likely true outcome.
However even with that, years later when shit might be going down, you can say with some self respect, that you did no follow that order you believed to be wrong, or that you tried to let people know the truth at your own personal cost. "I was just following orders" is a horrible thing to say, though even I can have some empathy when the outcome was they would be shot for not following orders.
Anyway as someone who isn't in the military, I am glad someone like that was in it, and I think he thought he was doing the right thing. He will be judged one way or another, and likely we don't have all the facts, but I would hope that if nothing untoward complicates the issue that the military court will absolve him, maybe even give him a medal (and then likely discharge him). I also think that as much as this is bad PR for the Army, it is also potential good PR. As I don't think anyone is too surprised that this sort illegal action or accident took place, however I know I would feel more comfortable, and confident knowing that there are good people within the Army that are also trying to do the right thing.
Heh, I know it shouldn't be funny, but I immediately thought of bears and the rule never to run from a bear, as it would immediately trigger a hunter-prey response. If you don't run, the bears don't know what to make of you and will act cautious, and if you slowing back away while making non-threatening noise, they will likely move along and will be happy to be away from you. If however you run, the bear will think you automatically its "prey" and will attack you, instinctively.
So if you do run into any of America's armed forces, just freeze, stand tall with your arms spread, avoid eye contact, and slowly back away, saying in an affirmative but non-threatening way "Whoa bear, hey bear, whoa bear...".
Yes because all our software licences we currently own are linux compatible. As is all our server software. All our web is hosted on linux. Also all all IT staff all know Linux, and also know how to support it which is pointless anyway as all the users know how to use Linux, as well as all the Linux equivalent office software.
Sarcasm.
Heck some of the negative airspace here can barely use Windows. Giving them Linux would be akin to giving a caveman a cellphone. Ook Ook Ah Ah Ah!
Just about everything is Windows. The cost to change everything over to Linux would be huge. All of which is a moot point as it all comes down to what the IT overlords are most comfortable with, and that is certainly the status quo. Heck trying to get them to set up an SQL Server is a challenge (MS or otherwise), as they are so entrenched in Oracle. Its like OCD I think, they get stuff set up a certain way just how they like it, and are then very resistant to change of any kind.
I hear ya in a lot of this stuff, but in the large soul crushing enterprise world, physics works differently.
Sure the thing with the Dells is a rigged Bid, no question there. Likely whoever was in charge of the bidding didn't know what the hell he was doing, and if was ever brought to task would be in deep crap. Or he was getting a kickback from Dell, which is doubtful... they are too cheap:) jk.
However to say having a requirement for Vista falls into the same category is foolish. In an enterprise environment they will have many requirements that must me met, and many of them, such as the choice of the OS is a justifiable element. Compatibility, Training, etc.. would all have huge impact. So stop being silly.
I learned a long time ago that Traffic tickets and Parking tickets long ago stopped being about safety, deterrent, or legal punishment. They are simply a tax. They are a way for the government and more specifically Police Departments and Cities and Municipalities to raise funds to pay their wages, and continue their existence. As such now, I ignore laws pretty much, and when caught, just pay the tax, and call it the cost of operating a Car in Canada.
Example 1:
Driving down a street that is considered "residential" and thus a 50km/h limit, but which really has hardly any actually houses on it and actually serves as the main connection between the City and the University. There is a park where the police set up a tripod speed trap, and work in 3 person teams. One operates the hidden tripod, one stands in the middle of the road past the trap and waves EVERYONE over (as NOBODY drives 50km/h there), and the last gives out the tickets and this speech: "We clocked you going 6x km/h, I am writing you a ticket for 125$ and two points off your licence. You can pay the fine or fight it in court. Alternatively you can attend a drivers safety course being put on by the local Police for 75$ and you won't have to pay the fine, or lose any points."
Fines go the the Province whereas if you opt for the alternative all the money goes to the local cops. Can you say conflict of interest?
Example 2:
I was visiting a friend of mine in Ottawa, Canada. Never having visited before I wasn't exactly sure where he lived, though I had directions. Anyway I arrive at what I think is the house. Not being sure if this is the case I stop and park in front, and walk up to the front door and knock. I friend comes to the door, and we say Hey and ask him where we should park. While we are talking, my friend who is facing the street, is like "dude, I think that guy is trying to give you a ticket", which is crazy as the car had only been stopped for like 2min, I mean traffic lights are longer. I turn around and confront the parking guy, and say I just stopped to see if this is the correct house, and that I am parking out back. The Parking guy say, "Oh OK, just make sure you move it, I'll cancel the ticket." I got in my car and moved it immediately. 3 or 4 months go by and I get a letter from the City of Ottawa, and I get a nasty later saying that not only did I owe money for a parking ticket, it was now overdue, and that I owed extra for that, and that if I didn't pay in X amount of days I would be convicted and all sorts of nasty things would happen to me. Naturally I was fucking pissed. I called up the parking services people in Ottawa and explained my situation, and this went back and forth 4 or 5 times until finally the parking attended lied and said that he did issue the ticket on purpose and it was a violation. My ONLY options were to fight the ticket or to pay. However I was told they only way I could fight it was in court in Ottawa. So my option was to take off work, drive 300KM, spending about 4-500$ dollars to fight the 60 or 75$ dollar parking ticket. The amount of anger, and rage in me was ultimate. However bottom line when it came down to it, it makes no sense to spend 500$ to fight 75$, so in the end I swallowed my rage and paid the City of Ottawa. It was extortion plain and simple. Most people put into that situation will do the same. So the City of Ottawa and others will play the game and generate revenue using the legal system. It disgusts me. How is it we are innocent until proven guilty, with the exception of traffic and parking? Expedience, and court costs, and various groups (police, cities) take advantage of this fact to their financial gain.
Ahhh the good old days! Born in 1977. I remember fondly connecting to BBS's in high school on a 2400 baud modem, I also remember playing Warcraft (1 and 2), Duke Nukem 3D, AND Doom (1 and 2) multiplayer (Well 2 player anyway:) at Residence in University with the same 2400 baud modem. Of course the Internet consisted of "Pine" and "Gopher", and Usenet at that time.. text was hardly in need of more horsepower. I sort of miss the connect tones of modems...

I am pretty sure the Liberals started the legislation in the first place. Their record on Copyright reform is no better. Only the NDP has a strong stance against this type of bill.
I think this is more of the professional politician being corrupt, and doing whatever it takes to further his or her political career. If that involves the support of media lobbyists as the expense of the people, then so be it. The NDP are idealistic enough to want to do the right thing. The Conservatives and Liberals just want power, and really have little or no ideals. Both would whore out their grandmothers if it meant they would get re-elected, improve their position, or win more seats. They stand for absolutely nothing. Both governments have been in the pockets of big media forever, and will continue to do so.
This issue being a complicated legal issue that the general public doesn't really understand, they assume correctly they can just create as much FUD as they like and make any decision that will personally benefit them as much as possible. They will concentrate on straight forward morality things in order to polarize the gray masses like Gay Marriage, etc... as everyone can have whatever opinion they want for or against. The insane part is that crap like that really only effects a very small subset of the population, and will have very little effect on anyone on Canada as a whole. I agree with you a bit, but Christians can't really talk either.
Between Crusades, Missionaries, and Mormons (They are Christian, right?) Christians has been trying to "Save" people and "Bring" the word of jebus to the heathens of the world. Some times this involved simple words, other times considerably more.
Anyway I am more of the mind of can't people just leave each other the fuck alone, and keep their damn beliefs to themselves? If I want to hear about your Potato God, I will damn well ask you about him, otherwise I really don't give a shit.
If part of your religion requires absurd rules of conduct, I will generally ignore them. If they are really apparent, and to me weird, I might stare as I find it strange. If you try to get special treatment because of your weird rules, or want to limit me by them, then of course I won't be too happy about it.
I would say round up all the crazy religious freaks and throw them on an island, and they can leave the rest of the sensible world alone, but I am pretty sure my grandparents are Baptists, and I do love them, so can't we all just get along!
An unfortunate side effect was it made the monkeys very very angry and aggressive. Monkeys infected with this "Rage" are not to be approached, and if you are bitten a level 9 quarantine should be immediately put into effect. Currently the monkeys are being held in a minimum security facility "Econo-Labs" which is located right next door to Peta National headquarters. We will try making the monkeys watch FOX news, mostly because we are a bunch of dicks...
Your post reminded me of a stupid product I saw. It is real. Crazy, but real.

Or you could save the 800$ you would spend on the new iPhone and get laid 4 times by 200$ hookers.
Just sayin'....

Ya, if you want to make it sound more impressive call it 900,719,925,474,099,200 bits and be done with it already.
I believe that is 900 quadrillion with a capitol Q!

You could also ask the question, "Why the fuck do I have to by extra for texting, when I am already paying for a data plan?".
5000-7000% markup is why.
An even better question could be, "Why the hell is there 5000-7000% markup on text message data in a competitive free market economy?".
Indeed.
would disagree, it also makes for a lovely swimming pool.

So if you do run into any of America's armed forces, just freeze, stand tall with your arms spread, avoid eye contact, and slowly back away, saying in an affirmative but non-threatening way "Whoa bear, hey bear, whoa bear...".

I would say round up all the crazy religious freaks and throw them on an island, and they can leave the rest of the sensible world alone, but I am pretty sure my grandparents are Baptists, and I do love them, so can't we all just get along!
Is anyone surprised they accidentally drilled into hell?
An unfortunate side effect was it made the monkeys very very angry and aggressive. Monkeys infected with this "Rage" are not to be approached, and if you are bitten a level 9 quarantine should be immediately put into effect. Currently the monkeys are being held in a minimum security facility "Econo-Labs" which is located right next door to Peta National headquarters. We will try making the monkeys watch FOX news, mostly because we are a bunch of dicks...
