With the interest rates banks are currently paying, you would be almost as well off putting it in your mattress. The current rates being paid don't even cover inflation.

I misled -- banks offer multiple types of accounts. I was talking about CDs -- check bankrate.com for the best rates, a 2-year CD will certainly beat inflation, and it gets better for longer-term CDs.

If you rent, you are guaranteed to get screwed because your landlord is taking that same risk and charging you more to make it worthwhile to him, and trying to make a profit on top of that.

They can try, but if they jack rates too high I either find another place to rent or (surprise) buy a house. If we were talking about 1-bedroom or above I would agree with you, but at efficiency rates and with the number of vacancies in my area (at least 6 months ago), the profit's pretty thin and must be made in bulk. It pretty much depends on the area you live in.

it will also be that interest rates later will almost surely be higher then than they are now.

I'm planning it such that hopefully when the time comes, I can buy a house almost flat-out and not worry about interest rates. I would have CD early-withdrawl penalties to worry about if I must go that route and don't have enough advance notice. Some banks are better than others with this.

The market has pretty much bottomed out and is likely to eventually turn around and start going up.

Probably, although I think as long as interest rates rise at the rate they are, prices will probably stay relatively flat. I am still worrying about the job (we recently had layoffs) so unfortunately that takes priority, regardless. Thx for the chat.

Really, it's just in your best interests to live as cheaply as possible.

I live in a tiny efficiency, so my rent is lower than the maintenance + property tax + school taxes some of my friends pay. I will get screwed if housing prices rise dramatically in the area (and I decide to buy here).

But with the economy in the situation it is, I'd prefer to have the money in-bank earning interest in case I lose my job, rather than in a house I'd need to sell in the medium term to a potentially unforgiving market.

That depends on your distribution of Linux and the version of Windows we're talking about.

Installing Mandrake was a pretty much a snap for me -- easier than Windows because I answered practically all of the questions before anything was copied over (so I could walk away from it), I didn't have to reboot to continue the install, and I didn't have to hunt up a license key.

I think one of the RedHat 6.x installers would crap out near the end if I set the time zone a certain way -- my other experiences w/RH seemed reasonable.

I reinstalled my latest distro (Debian Woody) about 4 times. Once I managed to skip installing the bootloader. Once, I tried to use dselect (anybody who tells you to do a minimal install and apt-get *everything* else is right on the money). Then I had a couple rounds of figuring out which kernel modules I needed, and tweaking XFree correctly -- pulling out monitor specs and trying to figure out what a framebuffer was and why my X didn't work (the other distros were more or less automagic).

I know ranting about the Woody installer is about as noble as kicking a special needs kid in the nuts, but I hope those guys can get Sarge out the door soon.

That is, 8 (or more) hours of work a day needs to get done and in the short term, if you were not there, no one could fill in for you. I think it is exactly this property that forces the job to pay you a decent wage.

p.s. I think your "buying useless crap" argument should be discoupled from the rest of it. I have a friend who barely makes rent, but when he actually has any money, he blows it on computer games. I also know money-hoarding hermits who are apparently trying to retire at 40. Point being, peoples' spending habits can be largely separated from how much they make.

We have a *lot* of damn money going to Iraq that would really be better off here, especially considering our current deficit/debt load which is in my mind the #1 issue facing America today. It's more than blowing away any oil profits we might be soaking up.

I despise Bush for fighting a war on two fronts in general, and in particular for the 90/10 split of troops he's given to Iraq and Afghanistan, especially when we haven't found Bin Laden yet.

I despise Bush for setting up John Ashcroft as Attorney General.

I despise Bush for supporting that almost-fuckup in Venezuela that would have overthrown a democratically-elected president because of his anti-US sentiments.

I despise Bush for pissing off the rest of the world for no reason -- with Iraq, and with his crazy-ass Axis Of Evil speech.

I'm more tolerant of Bush's domestic and economic policies (although I think they're atrocious) since most of the real ability to improve things there lies with our completely inept Congress. Bush has a habit of proposing grand schemes w/out getting them any funding (many presidents are prone to; he's just worse than usual). I disagree w/his stance on gay marriage.

I don't really give a shit about Bush's possible former coke habit or his military record (except his lack of results as commander-in-chief).
