But you could theoretically copy your DVDs to VHS if you wanted to. Buying a DVD player didn't make your VHS players essentially obsolete... just a little less accessible. Not to mention, DVD players can't play VHS tapes.

You can theoretically copy DVD to BD, but it's much more of a pain in the ass. And the BD player can play DVDs.

    Entirely different scenario IMO.

If your bank gave out tons of dubious loans out of greed, why the fuck should the Federal Reserve save you by diluting our currency (effectively taxing all citizens)?

  8. Re:Good for him on Creative Backs Down on Vista Driver Debacle · · Score: 1

If you're really serious about recording, you're going to buy an external audio unit, not some dainty sound card. Most people who buy external sound "cards" don't buy whatever crap Creative makes.

Also, from personal experience and what I've read, the on-board sound built into nForce boards has always been good enough or better than auxiliary sound cards.

    Moral of the story:
If you're going to use a computer for recording, you're going to spend at least $200 on an external audio unit.
If you're going to play games, you're fine with high-end motherboard sound.
If you're going to play solitaire, you're fine with on-board sound.

There's really no case where you should ever buy a "sound card" unless you want some exxxxxtreme gaming "features" (like a free temporary tattoo in the box).

And so that's why the original poster implied that Creative's commodity sound card market is drying up.

The thing I don't understand is why Creative doesn't own the on-board market. But then again, I'm not crying because I still hate them for crappy drivers from the year 2000.

Not to mention I still can't find a simple drop-in replacement for sound editing that's as good as soundforge and won't crash on me. Audacity is the closest thing, and it never fails to ruin my day.

However, I will take a look at this 64Studio thing. I was also curious about the Ubuntu-based multimedia distro out there. It's hard enough dragging myself to the recording computer without running into bizarre computer issues.

This demonstrates the problem with allowing private organizations to serve as the gateway to the network. Oh yeah, like Iran, and China, and all the other governments that filter their net connections. Yeah, I know, "but that couldn't happen in the U.S.A.!"

I guess I'd prefer that a private organization be sued and/or lose business to a less restrictive organization than a debate/pandering over this in the Senate. The government should ensure that there is competition we can go to in such cases, not to provide the service itself or strong arm private organizations.

While that's damn insightful, it assumes that there is a substantial rift between 'pop' music and 'real' music.

I used to be pretty judgmental of pop music. But, shit, somebody has to write it. Somebody has to perform it. Somebody has to slave for hours for the final mix. Is the sum of all that talent worthless just because we think we're better than that? Just because there's more division of labor, does that make it any less musical? Does that mean I should snub it even if I find it catchy?

Don't get me wrong - I'm a musician, I understand the resentment toward, what is perceived as, Wal-Mart music. I hate the music industry just as much as anyone. However, I don't think that this division you bring up is that simple.

I know people who only listen to indie bands... just so they can say they only listen to indie bands... because for some reason, being indie makes the music more authentic. If the music were that good, you'd think the bands would be signed to a major label. Then the fans would complain that the band sold out!

Human beings have this illogical obsession with originality and authenticity. Look at synthetic vs real diamonds, generic vs name brands, anything vs Apple, etc.

There will always be music made for 'profit', and there will always be music made for the hell of it, but I don't think that means that one or the other will stick firmly to a specific distribution model.
