  1. Does AA have a Cardboard Box? on Training From America's Army Game Saved a Life · · Score: 2, Funny

Everything I needed to know about warfare and life I learned from Metal Gear. Yeah, that's right. The original.

You can infiltrate classified military installations by disguising yourself as an innocuous cardboard box. There's nothing more indispensable than a pack of smokes. And nothing in the entire arsenal of the Military-Industrial Complex is as singularly lethal as a ninja.

  2. Nothing to do with it on Customers Treated as Culprits in Support Calls? · · Score: 1

When I was in the support trenches, I always informed my users that the first two probabilities we needed to eliminate in solving their problem were user error and mis-reporting of the actual problem. I always made sure that my users understood that my sole interest lay in resolving their issue in the quickest possible way, and that 90% of the time, these first two concerns represented the quickest possible resolution. It's never anything personal against the user, if you're a professional, and techs who would mindlessly pursue such a mindset have no business in direct personal support.

In short, in telephone support, it's called "call control". You need to establish enough of a rapport with the user to ensure that they're working with you, not against you, in the resolution of THEIR problem, and that it's in BOTH your interests to solve that problem as expeditiously as possible.

  3. Re:Leave him alone! on Academic Credentials and Wikiality · · Score: 2, Insightful

Firstly, I'd have to wonder what impact his fanciful list of credentials had when he was nominated for, and voted on, for his various wikipedia titles.

Secondly, I'd say it's a bad omen: If this guy has used bad faith to attain a "decision-making" position within wikipedia, then what sorts of motivations is this person going to be acting on in their performance of their duties? This issue with "editors" taking biases, then abusing wiki's procedural hierarchy to get "their" way on a contentious issue is hardly new, but this story makes the causes behind many of the potential abuses a bit clearer.

Finally, in the user's bio on wikipedia, I notice about ten years' worth of professional-level work experience, which is a bit abnormal for someone who's only 24 years old and has no degree. More lies?

It'd also be nice to know how long a job posting has really been posted....a lot of times, companies that have turnover issues, and therefore, eternal openings, will simply re-jigger their listing so it looks "fresh".

In short, it is time for these sites to work for the jobseeker and not the employer. There's often reasons why a given position is open that have nothing to do with expansion. :)
