  1. Worth it? on Sunlight Foundation Announces 'Sarah's Inbox' · · Score: 1

I bet 50% of those reading Slashdot have access or run all of those Exchange servers... so they are used to the *possibility* to read other people's emails. So what's the big deal? Her minute of fame has passed a long time away. And then, for most of the audience that lives in strange countries like Europe and Asia, who the hell is she anyways?

  2. Suspicious article on Russia Moves To Universal ID Card · · Score: 1

Just y 2C, but the story looks highly suspicious. First of all, NOWHERE on the website does it say that it will replace the internal passport. Transport passes, social security as a mean of getting services, but in Russia social security number and internal passport are two very different things. Secondly, the website is, I would say, rahter suspicious. Generic Joomla, with even Joomla logos still there (footer, site icon, etc). Looks like something created in 20 mins, providing they had the text. Government structures, although slow, do not work this sloppily. So I would take the whole thing with a grain of salt :)

Don't look into books, look into yourself, and your partner as the most cherished person in the world. That's all.

  7. bad move on An Early Look at the NASA MMO · · Score: 1

Isn't the goal of a space agency to promote scientific advance for space travel? If they are tryng to get additional funding, they'd better team up with someone serious, like Blizzard, who knows the market, player's expectations and... how to make a successful game.
If the goal is to increase common Joe's awareness that you need to recycle etc, a boring game won't do this either.
Waste of taxpayer's money in a field where NASA has no history, no experience and ... really not such an innovative idea for a gameplay!

  10. Upgrading - not an option? on The Myth of Upgrade Inevitability Is Dead · · Score: 1

People do not upgrade "just because". Well, sure, a small percentage do (you know, people who just have to get the latest and shiniest... YOU know what I mean, right?).
For the majority, either they upgrade "by accident" - when buying a new PC that, accidentally, comes with a new OS.
For businesses, it is not an accident, they evaluate that the OS 1) runs all the soft they use and 2) complies with hardware they use, and 3) is sustainable (security patches, support etc).
Because of that, businesses WILL have to upgrade, together with us, once XP support stops (hey, 2014 is NOT a long way out!), they buy new hardware (oops, sales printers don't have XP drivers anymore, or can't sync with the latest BlackBerry thingies!!!). Last, but not least, they upgrade MSOffice, servers and then, surprise, to use the new features they need components that are Vista-only.
Moving away? Macs or Linux, *IF they comply to the same requirements: newest hardware, stable support and problem-solving, and of course playing nice with the latest corporate drones gadgets!

  12. support? on Why Buy a PC Preloaded With Linux? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I can see several benefits of buying a Linux-installed desktop.
    - for one thing, one can pray that the manufacturer has done everything to maximize compatibility. Sure, you can do it yourself, but for an average user, it really makes sense.
    - support. Support is needed, when you're stuck and dont know what to do (or what questions to ask in the forums!). Having professional support is always a plus.
    - you can't resell your Windows liscence anyways (read the small print). So why just trash it?
    - giving the industry a sign. Ok, that one is a bit too theoretical, but anyways. A company producing a nice linux-powered PC that sells will continue to do that. Develop drivers, boots support, invest time and money. It will be an indicator that it isnt ony possible, but profitable... maybe others will then follow!

  13. Misleading info on Linux To Be Installed In Every Russian School · · Score: 3, Informative

That article, no matter what it claims, is totally misleading as, according to most other sources (namely gazeta.ru) this line of argumentation ("oh, we are going to build our own OS!") is solely used as a way to make a better deal with MS after the serie of busts in the russian schools using pirated copies of Windows. No matter what it does, the Russian Ministry of Education is not stupid.. they just want a better deal.

for those too buzy to do it themselves... yes it installs and runs nicely under Office2007. Just a dialog saying that some of the doc functionality can be lost in the conversion process, otherwise seems to work just fine.
Oh, and the download is done the typical easy SUN way... first you run the Jave Download manager, which allows tou to select a file to download, then you have to start(!!!) it, then once finished, there is an installer to unpack it, and THEN finally an installer to install it. Easy, right?

By the way, for all those discussing the GPL here... I havent seen the GPL liscence during the easy install process. The plug-in liscence is a "normal" SUN Microsystems liscence.Go figure!

Downsides: VERY unsuitable for graphic applications because of bad graphics, sound problems and the frustration of connecting any USB periferals.
Thin clinets or dumb terminals are ok if you have an organisation where everyone uses Excel or Word the whole day long. Creative work, extensive use of periferals - forget it.
