Totally misleading summary, it's not clear at all whether the GPL3 ""will"" include such stuff. Someone from the FSFE *suggested* it. Thanks a bunch Slashdot.
Firefox doesn't identify itself as IE either, and did it hurt its popularity? Opera should by default identify itself as Opera. The option to identify as IE can remain in the menu, that's ok. But currently, the only one that really profits from this is MS. IE-only sites won't go away if you use Opera but IE appears in the site's statistics.
And Google only supports Mozilla's prefetching for a couple of weeks. Before that, Firefox's market share wasn't significantly lower, was it? Besides, only the raw source code gets prefetched as far as I know. Scripts, images and the like are only executed/loaded when a user actually visits the page. So, when Firefox prefetches a site, it should be visible in the site's logs, but I don't think it could trigger a third-party counter/tracker. Also, Google only prefetches certain sites, not any site.
And that Opera identifies itself as IE is a valid concern, but that's Opera's fault, and nothing that would inflate Firefox's version numbers, just IE's.
> more important than some oppressed chinese guy getting his opinion out on a part of the web banned in China?
Slashdot would probably be the last place he would turn to to get his opinion [about the regime] out. First, one sane voice would not be heard among thousands of screaming kids, and second, the Chinese undercover state security officials would mod him redundant within seconds.;-)
Just to get an idea of the level of fragmentation that's taking place. That there's a 90-day waiting period so that they don't add distros that are dead the next day speaks volumes too.
Also click on the dropdown menu at the top of the Distrowatch page to get a more complete list of available distros.
Yup, that's the default behavior on Linux. To turn it off (so that you can close tabs with a middle click), type "about:config" in your location bar and set "middlemouse.contentLoadURL" to "false".
Great, then I don't preview my stuff for once and then it looks like crap.
+ Downloads from download.com and possibly other download sites + Downloads directly from FTP mirrors + Linux distributions that provide Firefox + Distribution via CD or SD card or USB stick,... + Countless other possibilites, such as downlads from localization homepages + Slashdot's I'm-not-a-script-confirmer is annoying as hell

Exactly what I was thinking. The Sun among the IT sites wants to tell others how to behave...
And Goodger's comments were justified. Netscape just acted unprofessional. Firefox 1.0.4 was out for days and Netscape released its new version based on Firefox 1.0.3, while they told their visitors at Netscape.com that their current browsers are outdated (even recent Firefox nightlies!) and that they should upgrade to the secure Netscape 8.
Was there a need to post this on linux.slashdot.org? Just to reduce the general confusion. Can't even blame people for not RTFA, because neither the first nor the 2nd link mention anything about BeOS.
> Also, Opera's engine as well as khtml is much much faster than gecko, especially rendering tables like these
Took around 2 seconds to load in my recent Firefox nightly, not enough to be bothered to see how Opera or KHTML draws it some milliseconds faster....what are some people on about?
Don't forget to add all the downloads from mirrors, distro repositories, l10n homepages, and sites like download.com to your calculation. Those are all not counted. I downloaded Firefox countless times but never from SpreadFirefoxized sources.

Don't believe everything Slashdot writes.
Yeah. Heise.de reported on this very differently too. It said someone from the FSFE "suggested" to add this stuff.
The summary and especially the "will" is very misleading.
> What a crappy summary
Get a browser with support for hyperlinks. Cool stuff.
Olds for 'tards. Stuff that mattered.

"version numbers" = "market share"
Yup.

Snob switches OS.
In Soviet Russia, F's are vowels.
Sorry.

Because there can never be enough.
Nope, just the very tip of the iceberg.
From the LXer feed earlier today: " It might sound like an exaggeration, but I receive an average of 2 - 3 requests per week to include a new distribution. "

> Fucking socialist bastards.
Well, as I'm fairly liberal, I say each to their own, but what does that have to do with the topic?

Groklaw article
Great how Slashdot supports MS at recycling old and debunked FUD.

> red flag
Oh, fitting subject.
What you're talking about is usually known as "arrogance".
