Yeah, they're not like those malnourished, naked independent artists.

These guys are clearly tools of the industry and no amount of message board posting will prove otherwise. Maybe if they were bold and ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING I would admire them.

  2. Lua is simple, functional, and ideal for games on Extending Games With Lua · · Score: 3, Informative

I embedded Lua into an as-yet-unreleased top-scrolling space shooting game (a la Raptor) and it is a very handy language for embedding. I believe it was originally designed as a language simply for configuration files, but is has grown into a capable (but very simple) language.

The entire manual that explain the whole language as well as the C embedding interface and the optional standard libraries is probably less than 100 pages printed. The source code is around 10,000 lines of C code, I believe.

Performance was also particularly impressive provided you know what you're doing. If you're new to functional programming, you might want to read up a bit. Also, it is a good idea to have experience with recursion and other such elementary topics.

Overall, I couldn't believe how easy it was to build Lua into my little project and I doubt I'll ever take a look at another scripting language because Lua is just that good.

The scheme I chose to use for my project is that it reads in all the Lua files in a directory and using the game engine's simple API (in Lua), different scripts add things like ships or new weapons. This allows the player to write a quick script for a new weapon (e.g. a rail gun), drop the script in a directory, start the game, and then use that weapon. There's basically no overhead. I think that's pretty cool and encourages people who don't know how to make an entire game to still have a fun time extending the game by themselves.

  3. Re:Post-disaster scams... on PayPal Freezes Hurricane Relief Account · · Score: 1

The reason that Something Awful was using a Paypal link was so that Richard Kyanka could send free SA merchandise to people who donated a moderate amount as a bit of motivation. The normal payment system was offline because it was hosted in New Orleans (along with the rest of the site), so Kyanka turned to Paypal and the rest is probably some of the worst PR I've ever heard of.

Not really, it would take a mind-bendingly bad article to top some in the past, but I don't think innovation has slowed down and your complaints seem entirely negligible and pointless to me.

Additionally, writing an article at 3 A.M. is not a very good excuse, but the real crime is that your article ended up on the front page.

Again, bad article, but it sparked some good conversation and it's not your fault it actually got posted.

I switched from Debian to Gentoo over a year ago and I am currently running Gentoo.

My advice: DO NOT use Gentoo. I thought Debian unstable updates were a pain (things breaking, packages not ready yet, etc.), but I tried upgrading a pretty average Gentoo installation and nearly half of the programs I used everyday stopped working.

I plan on switching back to Debian ASAP, but I really need x.org, so I've been putting it off until this (great) news comes along.

I dislike using backslashes because the backslash key is in different positions and geometries on nearly every keyboard I've used. It's like every keyboard designer forgot about that particular key and then had to fit it in somewhere that wouldn't look hideous.

Given that I'm currently on an all-white background screen and it really isn't that bright, I think that means that they just did such a good job on faking the eye effects in those screenshots that my brain was fooled.

  19. Re:Combine it with Enlightenment on Preview of X Windows Eye Candy · · Score: 1

Enlightenment looks like the result of a couple of Amiga demo scene programmers attempting to create a desktop for Linux. By that, I mean that it appears to have been designed with a few gimmicks in mind and everything else has taken a back seat.

I used an older release of Enlightenment a year or two ago because those gimmicks were new and exciting at the time (thumbnailed windows), but I eventually got fed up with the fact that I couldn't toggle applications to fullscreen and such. On the other hand, I'm just not impressed with e17. It looks to me like all of the little things have been ignored in favor of unnecessary flashiness (keeping pop-up menus on the screen without user interaction and pauses, glowing orbs flying all around the screen when you accidentally mouse over the launcher, etc.)

This time, the compile failed. This was odd since I hadn't changed any code. Then I looked at the output: "On line 24: #inc5ude ". A quick glance at the line showed "#include " without the 5 replacing the l.

I was scared since I had installed some software just a few hours before I noticed this.

Doesn't this kind of ruin the attempt at immersion in a game? Every time you see an ad for something that is completely unrelated to the game, that instead makes you focus on the real world.

From what I understand, some MMORPG players play the game as sort of a temporary escape from real life. I bet some people would get pretty annoyed if they say an in-game ad for a technical institute or some other advertisement that implies that they're not working hard enough.
