Oh, great, I'm gonna get modded down for redundancy, even though the guy who posted this same idea above me posted at the same exact time.

So much for my lame attempt at karma whoring.

Thinking more about this idea, however, I realized that this really won't work, unless each piece of PC equipment is stamped much like bottles/cans are, otherwise, the warehouses full of old rotting PC equipment that thousands of companies don't know what to do with will suddenly be showing up asking for a handout (refund of deposit) on merchandise that wasn't charged the deposit in the first place.

  2. Bottle Deposits? on Whose Burden is it to Recycle Computers? · · Score: 1

I think they should make the consumers pay a $1-$10 refundable deposit on all recyclable computer equipment. Make the dollar figure adjust depending on the type of hardware, maybe $1 for a keyboard, but $10 for a CRT. Have return/refund stations at any place that sells the stuff, and give out refunds, just like we do with bottles and cans in some states.

That way, when I load up my truck with my old junky used equipment and dump it on the side of the road somewhere, bums can load it into shopping carts and make some money. I don't have to clean up my mess, and can dump my PC-related trash anywhere, bums make some extra cash, and the streets remain clean and uncluttered of unsightly PC litter!

    Everybody wins!

It's people like you that cannot realize that all of their problems are in their head, and are usually their own fault, and can also be easily fixed by finding a creative outlet. (your mileage may differ, talk to a therapist if you need to)

Stop fucking blaming others. Attempted suicide = cry for help. Don't cry, it doesn't get you anywhere, just ASK for the help.

This will get modded flamebait or whatever, I don't give a shit. You know why? Cuz this whole post is hypocritical, I used to be just like you (a cutter, sometimes too deep), and these 'cries for help' are stupid, and accomplish nothing. Because the sad fact is that no one else really cares. So if you want help, go get it.

And if you don't want help, figure out how to do the suicide right, and don't ruin the world for the rest of us. I like my video games/movies/internet, and don't need more legislation to be passed to regulate what I can and cannot do because some pansy almost kills himself and figures out that the internet is the reason.

I use CVS. How else do I keep track of millions of lines of code?

My point is, if you work on such a system like I do, and you make many changes for many different reasons for many different people (the system I work on is used worldwide) you easily lose track of what changed, and why.

So, for example, I make a change for a particular customer, and put it in the way you say (and the other 7 replies I got state). I then write major modifications/changes on TOP of those changes later on.

Eventually, a bug pops up with the first change I made. I CANNOT simply ROLLBACK and LOSE all of the other work I did. And it's a huge PITA to re-do and re-import all of the other changes I have done if I rollback, especially if other DLL's are involved. The whole system will crash.

In actuality, I should explain myself better. In each DLL (and components of DLLs, if they are large) there is a COMMENTS section. In the code itself, we comment out the line, put in the new line, and mark it with a #, Name, and Date (and sometimes a quick couple words explaining why). In the COMMENTS section (totally separated from the code, so the code remains somewhat readable) we go into the detail why we made the change, what customer requested it, and any other pertinent (sp?) details, such as other DLL's / Functions that are affected.

My major reason for being a dick in my parent reply is the person writing is so concerned about a 800 or 600 line application (I forget what they wrote) and half of those lines being comments. My system has MILLIONS of lines of code, and every single comment that is in there usuallly helps IMMENSELY when trying to debug something.

I don't understand the big deal of leaving commented-out code in a source base, there really is no better place to put it. Hard drive space is cheap, so what if my release versions increase a few kilobytes? It's not like the compiler or the end-users product gets any bigger, the comments are simply ignored and left out of our release.

(Please, all the other people who FLAMED me on my parent post, read/reply to this one.)

Moderate -1, WRONG. Whenever I make a change, I almost always comment out the existing line, put my initials, date, and why I commented it, and then put in my new line.

Yes, it makes search/grep/replace harder to do, but when you work on a 200+ DLL system, and eventually come upon a bug that started at XX date, you can easily revert back all your changes without having to read through comments and figure out what you changed. Just simply put back in the line you commented out.

My $0.02, and doing this has saved my butt numerous times when you're sitting at the implementation phase, ready to go-live, and something fails last-minute. (testing be damned!)

One thing I noticed with CIV is that if you change your display settings, like 16-bit to 32-bit, or 800x600 to 1024x800, it won't work anymore without completely reinstalling. It checks your video settings when you installed, and always expects them to be the same.
