  1. I don't like Real Media either on NPR's Car Talk Dumping RealMedia · · Score: 3, Interesting

Peoples problem with Real Media is not the quality of the streaming media. It is the constant barrage of advertising and popups to get you to sign up for the premium service. Microsoft may no tdo this now but once they have the market cornered they will switch to a pay for play model i'm guessing. I'm surprised that Car talk is moving away from this kind of crap when so many others are moving toward. It seems like half the online newspapers that used to be free are now a charge or register type of thing.

  2. Always DDOS on SCO Offers $250K Bounty for MyDoom Author's Arrest · · Score: 1

It seems that every time there is a story on slashdot linking to SCO they are suffering a DDOS attack. I can never seem to get through.

  3. Dumb advice on Sharing IT Problems with Executives? · · Score: 1

That is the quickest way to never get promoted. I want my business to succeed. If people who work for me are committed to that success than I am happy when they come up with new ideas to better the company. As an IT geek your job is to improve the company. If you do it and work hard you will succeed regardless of your corporate kung fu.

  4. Re:If every mp3 player is dubbed "iPod Killer" on Mix Wi-Fi and Portable Digital Audio, Get Aireo · · Score: 4, Insightful

Apple has incredible marketing. I have never seen any mp3 player advertised except the IPOD. Well, actually I've seen magazine ads for Creative Muvo. But advertising for the IPOD is everywhere. The masses will go where they are told.

  5. I like on Mix Wi-Fi and Portable Digital Audio, Get Aireo · · Score: 4, Interesting

I like this thing. I don't need 40 gigs or 80 gigs or whatever when dealing with a portable music player. I want it to be small and I need more storage than 128 megs. 1.5 gigs is pretty good. I also don't care if it doesn't work with any of the music services. I don't want that DRM'd crap. Until they get things right I can find all the music I need on P2P. I dissapointed that there biggest sell point is that it is wireless. But I guess I-pod wins design and lots of other players are smaller so you go with your strengths. What is the price I didn't spend enough time looking to find it.

  6. Won't Happen Again on Lost Doctor Who Episode Found · · Score: 3, Interesting

In this new digital age where lots of people collect every episode of their favorite TV shows we won't have to worry about this again. Long live P2P.

Hehe thats true. Now with the addition of voice chat to games like CS i can have more of a surety the the female nick is actually female. Although I can't use a female sounding nick it becomes impossible to play with all the 14 year old kids trying to hit on me. I had the nick Adrien Barbobot which is a joke of of Sealab 2021.

  8. Mozilla Growing on Mozilla 1.6 Released · · Score: 4, Interesting

All slashdot readers know about the benefits of Mozilla but I am happy to see some more mainstream magazines giving props to the browser. I noticed it won some magazines comparo of browsers for the end of 2003. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we keep seeing improvements in Mozilla while it seems like IE has been a stagnant product for some time.

  9. 73 vs 69 percent on Internet Users Are More Social Than Non-Users · · Score: 1

I'm surprised that this number is so close. I've been told time and time again that men like computers and women don't and yet this study has internet usage almost equal and i'm sure the 4 points is within the margin of error in the poll. Maybe geeks won't be alone for too much longer. Then again who am i kidding.

  10. Patent System Gone too far on URLs Patented, Domain Registrars Sued · · Score: 3, Insightful

Am I the only one that thinks the patent system is out of control. I thought patents were designed to further scientific knowledge for the betterment of mankind or something like that. Now there are cases where research is being hindered because you're not allowed to use prior patented research. Patents helped a lot of scientists in the early days make a living but now it is just a way to strengthen megacorps. It disgusts me when a big company is sold not because of anything produced by it or because of it's quality of it's employees but because of the size of it's patent library. Changes need to be made.

No Kidding. I used to live in the same town as Timothy Zahn (Coos Bay, Oregon) and he would always come to the library to sign books and what not. Way cool guy.

  12. Re:Linux Desktop Already Easier for Some Things on Linus Says 2004 is the Year for Desktop Linux · · Score: 1

While getting Linux itself to run can be challenging for the masses and setting up MythTv can be a bit difficult the program itself is much better for the masses. Ease of use and functionality is way higher. After initial setup Myth is a better program in all categories. Ugh i sound like a commercial.

  13. Re:Its interesting but... on Linus Says 2004 is the Year for Desktop Linux · · Score: 1

This is the one barrier for me to dump windows. I have a lot of time invested in learning different applications. Not only do I not want to relearn something on a different app many times the app doesn't exist in any form on Linux i.e. a music creation package like Cubase.

  14. Linux Desktop Already Easier for Some Things on Linus Says 2004 is the Year for Desktop Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

I use both Windows XP and Mandrake and I use a wide range of programs. While most of my programs wont even work on Linux (I don't count xwindows) There are a crop of programs that I prefer on Linux or actually a crop of applications. One example, Myth, is a program that beats the hell out of Windows Media Center Edition. I think the more Microsoft tries to lock down what you can do with your computer the more success Linux will have.

  15. Re:Selling Back Catalogs on Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep · · Score: 1

I agree. I know that when i find an artist I really like i will get all the music that they have ever produced this includes bootlegs and live shows and unreleased tracks. The artist doesn't usually make a dime off of me from this though. I will definitely go to the show of an artist that I listen to their music though and sometimes I will buy a t-shirt. I've driven over three hours to get to shows so I could hear someone live. I think in the end the artist makes more money from me getting their music illicitly than those who buy their music through the labels.

  16. Selling Back Catalogs on Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep · · Score: 1

I totally agree. The labels should put all of their music available for download. Unfortunately, sales of older music would cannibalize sales of the newer ultra marketed artists. For the labels this is antathema to everything they believe in because if they can't take the artists profit and claim it was spent on marketing they might have to pay them.

  17. Re:Getting Closer on Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep · · Score: 1

I think the reason you would have to limit downloads is not because people would have every song within a month but because of bandwidth costs. I have over 25,000 tracks and i would bet i dont have a thousandth of a percent of total available music. I doubt anyone has the pipe or the storage to think about downloading all available music. Besides currently all the P2P programs do have unlimited downloads and they have been going strong for years.

  18. Re: I was one of them.... on TruSonic Uses MP3.com Catalog As Muzak · · Score: 1

You make my point exactly. Now they have taken away the ability for normal people to download and peruse music so that maybe i can find a new artist i like and they are going to use it for elavators where I will never be able to figure out that the song is yours for example. They managed to do all of this without paying the artist a cent. It makes me mad. Not because it is hurting at home artists like yourself but because it was misleading and goes against principle.

  19. Re:Awesome! on Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep · · Score: 2, Insightful

All of there music is on every P2P service. I don't see what the point is of DRM because all music and movies are always on all P2P services. The only people they hurt with DRM are the honest ones.

  20. Re:Criminals on Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep · · Score: 1

I think there are many on Slashdot who believe the laws that make copying illegal need to be altered. If I knew that this stuff would get into the Public Domain sometime I might feel guilty. Until they rewrite copyright to be something like 14 years like it was originally I will copy without remorse.

  21. Getting Closer on Warp Records Reject DRM, Go Bleep · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is closer to a model I can live with. I'm sorry after having lived through the heyday of free downloads it is going to take a new price point for me. I think a subscription model with unlimited downloads and no DRM is more in line with what i would pay for. I am one of those people who feels no guilt with copying. To support artists I'll go to there shows. Props for being DRM free though.

  23. Re:How will we fund it? Spend it elsewhere! on USA To Return To Moon By 2015, Then Mars · · Score: 1

I definitely feel that NASA needs some vary lofty long term goals. In my opinion scientific research in zero-g is not enough to justify the cost of NASA. We need some long term goal like the Apollo missions once were. Whether it's the colonization of the moon or a visit Mars i'm excited.

  24. Money Better Spent on USA To Return To Moon By 2015, Then Mars · · Score: 2, Insightful

I am a big proponent of the space program but i think money would be much better spent developing resources on the moon as opposed to going to mars. I am not saying mars should not be an eventual goal but im much more interested in the moon as a future energy resource.

  25. Corporate greed on TruSonic Uses MP3.com Catalog As Muzak · · Score: 5, Interesting

I'm sure the artists did not envision this for there music when it was uploaded to mp3.com. This is certainly not going to increase sales of an artists music. Who while sitting in the elevator says, "I wonder who that is." If people were curious they wouldn't have the ability to ask. According to the article the artists are complaining about royalties. It looks like a way for the corporations to circumvent licensing agreements and make money off of content they shouldn't own.
