I've worked on an asus netbook running windows once. The proprietary interface was nightmarish, and it took me about 20 minutes to even find a terminal window. Trying to get a printer installed was a joke - especially considering that these machines were marketed to the "browse the web and check email only" crowd, I can't blame them for moving to windows. It sucks, but I have to be fair. If you're going to put on a linux distro and expect the doubleclickers of the world to like it, make sure its easy, and it 'just works.' No finding drivers, no anything special. Just work.

When you're done with the phase, sell it on craigslist for a hundred bucks as a set, or keep it as a media pc. You're on a geek website bro, there's always a use for another PC. Always.

Not true. Do some research on aquaponic gardening. Basically you raise a big container of fish. The fish water gets full of fish waste. Dangling into this water are the roots of hydroponic plants. They take the fish wastes, use them as food, add oxygen to and purify the water. The only thing you need to pay for at that point is fish food - and even that isn't necessary if you use some types of plant material/algae which will keep growing to feed the fish. Its essentially a full ecosystem capable of feeding an entire town come harvest time. Come next season, start over. Further you can set up one breeding pond of fish to be used to supply fingerlings for other ponds. It's pretty awesome stuff. In theory it could run ad-infinitum so long as it was well maintained.

Obviously you've never spoken to a tank commander, or any manufacturer of the UI's inside of armored vehicles. They are designed to be 'like video games' for a reason. Specifically to dehumanize the opponent, and mitigate the likelihood that you will associate your actual actions with killing. That's basic psychology. It's also why we refer to the enemy in Iraq/Afghanistan as Haji, why we called the Germans Jerries, and why we called the VC Charlie. You don't hate Ho Ming Na, father of 4 children who were brutally slain by US soldiers and is trying to simply save his farmland. You hate Charlie, so killing Ho Ming Na is acceptable. Anything to dehumanize them is crucial for removing mental blocks to soldiers.

Reread what you wrote and then read the title of this article. We're talking about people who may not in fact have a passing familiarity with ATI. Heck, I've worked in IT more than half my life now, and I had no idea that ATI had issues until I tried getting WoW to work under WINE. I don't spend my days browsing linux forums, and neither do 99% of users. They need an OS that will just work. And in business having to buy more expensive systems simply so they can have non-ATI cards is simply not always an option. Its fine to put on blinders and say people should just know, but the fact is most people do NOT know. They have no interest to know. If you expect them to switch, you have to make it easy, and make it feel like they're getting more out of the deal than headaches.

Yeah, try that if you're running an ATI video card, and a composited window manager. After 3 days of trying I gave up, switched back to windows, and had it running in about an hour (plus install time). That's coming from someone who administers about 40 linux servers, and has used linux as a desktop OS for close to 4 years now.

I agree 100%. When I heard they were doing a reboot, the first thing I thought was, "Yep, they're not going to include Chris Pike. They're going to destory the series. It'll make old trekkies cry." But they didn't disappoint at all. They also included a bunch of geek tidbits like Kobayashi Maru which I found very enjoyable. I am not too big of a man to say that they did the series proud, and I'll gladly be seeing this at least one or two more times in theaters. It was awesome.

Plus to be 100% honest, I didn't want to go opening weekend because I was worried about being surrounded by a bunch of basement dwelling neckbeards who were going to be spouting off about canon the whole time. Speaking to some of my friends, I wasn't the only one who felt that way. I have a feeling that it's going to remain strong. It's just an overall great movie.
