  1. pushing technology without support .... on OLPC Australia Pushes Boundaries of Education · · Score: 4, Insightful

This and the previous article, highlight the folly of pushing technology without support. There is absolutely no point in giving someone - in this case the teachers - a new gadget to use if you dont tell them how best to use it. I have seen this time and time again in my 30+ years as an educator - the kids will latch on quickly, the teachers not so. Not because the can't, but because the life of a teacher is busy and complex and the last thing they want to do is learn something that will likely end up as the latest expensive fad, and sit in a cupboard until someone takes them to the tip. Geeze, you can see this in your own house I'll bet. Your kids learn much faster than you, and your wife or SO - assuming you have one, just wants it to work without stuffing around. Not that this is a rant about OLPC by the way - I think the heart is there but the implementation sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.

  5. Re:Location, location, location on Decision Time For SKA Telescope Bids · · Score: 1

All of Western Australia is below the equator and a good chunk of it is below the Tropic of Capricorn (roughly 23 degrees south). The SKA is proposed for near Geraldton which is about 28 degrees south. Last time I looked the equator ran through Kenya (Nanyuki for example) and South Africa was actually to the south. The best view of our galaxy is from the Southern Hemisphere - the so called Milky way. Additionally if you want a radio-quiet place, the Southern Hemisphere is a no-brainer - Australia, South America or South Africa. A SKA in the Northern Hemisphere would be an effing disaster radio-wise. Hence the decision to place the SKA south of the equator has been thought through carefully by minds much cleverer than mine - and yours.

As a teacher I cannot agree with you more. Simply dumping technology into the classroom is worse than useless. Who tries to pick up the pieces and then gives up? The teacher! Who gets blamed for the "project" not working? The teacher! Who is given no training? The teacher! This is typical of most of the educational "innovations" that I have seen in 31 years. Show me a computer program that can teach Calculus/Trigonometry/Matrices better than I can and I'll resign tomorrow. I refer my students to KA - not as a teaching tool but as a review tool. The advantage of their delivery method is that a student can rewind and have another look, something that is often not possible in the classroom. The advantage that my students have in my class is that I can see what they are doing, pinpoint where they are struggling and try to find another way of explaining it. So, I believe that KA and conventional teaching can complement each other.
