I think that there are also a lot of games out there which have good concepts but could become great games with more polishing. Example - Prince of Persia : The sands of time. It was a style of game that had seemingly been beaten to death, espically with the failure of Prince of Persia 3D, but the latest iteration was absolutely phenominal. Novel doesn't necessarily equal good, but because of all the crap that comes out that when something is different, that's considered good because it's not something that's disapointed us before.

Well, if that option wasn't there for families to determine who'll get the donated organs, then you would eliminate the instances where a someone could donate a lung or kidney to his brother. How would you feel if you could save your sibling but medical law said you could only give your organ to the general pool of recipients? Plus, you start treading on dangerious legal areas if you start mandating on what people/families can or can not do with their bodies.

It would probably be closer to neutral evil, since your decision to kill someone would be based on how much it suited you at that given point. Lawful evil would mean that you wouldn't kill him, not because you didn't want to, but because the consequences of being caught were worse than you're willing to accept for the act, even though you really want to see him dead.

I would think that the other outer planets would play a significant role in that theory. While jupiter is on one side of the solar system, meteors could swing in from the other side and pound the earth. I would think that all the outer planets would form a net to catch asteroids. Of course, that's if you treat the univserse as 2D, there's still stuff approaching from vectors perpendicular to the general orientation of the solar system. In that sense, the large outer planets could actually deflect stuff into the earth if it's initially on a vector that wouldn't ordinarily meet with the earth.

Commercials pay for the content of a channel. They're how the networks make money. The money you pay to your cable/satelite provider is what allows you to get the programming the networks provide. You gotta pay for the upkeep of satelites and cable networks and such. If you remember back to the 70's and early 80's, you could get network programming for free, but you had to fiddle with the rabbit ears to pick up the transmission.

Now, that's a lot less than Y2K where you had to update, ummm, (echo) EVERYTHING IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE (/echo). The economic benefit I was alluding to wasn't for the country, it was for those in power. The cost of the war is paid for by John Q. Taxpayer. The people who benefit from the war are the friends of the president and vice president who own the companies who got the lucrative contracts for the post war reconstruction, which means lots of oil dollars. As for africa diamonds, the amount of money in the diamond market is dwarfed by the amount of money in the oil market. Diamonds are a luxury good, not everybody is in the market for a diamond. Everybody uses oil in one form or another. Also, the Bush's have a lot of history with the oil business, both in owning oil operations and having lots of friends in the oil business. Invading for diamonds wouldn't benefit the Bush's directly, so it wouldn't necessarily be a target for invasion, since some other compaines would be involved in exploiting that resource.

The point is that we reduce the dependency of the US on the middle east. The middle east has the US by the balls, and we've seen how they can be fickle with their fortunes. They'll cut production to raise prices, and then they'll increase it again once we complain a lot, but just a little bit. We're better off getting all of our oil from countries closer to here who are a bit more friendly to us. Also, the site had an interesting quote - "I don't think there's any question if broccoli were the number one export from the Middle East, we would not have gone to war in Iraq". You have to think that if there wasn't any economic benefit to those in power, would we have gone to war? I don't see us trying to liberate any of the african dictatorships.

  22. Re:Thus the phrase... on EPA Fuel Economy Myth: Too High, Too Low? · · Score: 5, Interesting

There's an interesting statistic on hybridcars.com about how making minimal improvements on gas milage can vastly affect our foreign oil dependency. The jist of it is that if we could improve the average gas milage of the US by one mile per gallon, we wouldn't have to drill in the arctic reserve. If we improced average gas milage by 8 miles per gallon, we wouldn't need to import oil from the middle east at all. So even though we may not be getting sticker values for milage on hybrids, they still kick ass compared to most sedans and such, and espically SUV's and the Hummer with its 8 miles per gallon. Bottom line, even though you aren't getting super phenomenal milage, you're still getting awesome milage, which is good in a variety of ways.

A friend of mine was having a collection for soldiers overseas, and was asking for donations of magazines, writing paper, soap, etc. So my fraternity got together a collection of magazines; sports illustrated, time, newsweek, maxim, stuff, and so on. When we delivered them to the collection site, we were told that all the mens magazines had to be removed, as they aren't allowed in Iraq since they would offend the religious and cultural sensitivities of the Iraqies. Wouldn't these CD's have the same effect?

If you're going to pull statistics out of your butt, at least make it believable. Sure, not everyone has the killer instinct and will hesitate. If you were to say that only 80% of solders were trying to kill the enemy, that's a stretch but almost conceivable, but to say that only 2% of soldiers were actually shooting at the enemy is absoulutely insane. The allies would have been decimated if only 2 people out of every 100 was fighting.
