  3. Re:Daemon News's Support Site Hacked on NetBSD 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

    From the Daemon News faq:

What is your web server configuration?

We are currently running on an AMD K6 300 with 160MB of DRAM. It is running FreeBSD 4.6-STABLE. We are using the Apache web server with the PHP4 module. On the database side, we are using MySQL.

Well, no wonder they got h4x0r3d--I don't know what kind of exploits 4.6 has, but I know it is not supported by FreeBSD. Sounds like they could use an upgrade. Otherwise, the site runs pretty damn good for an AMD K6 300 with 160 MB of RAM.

  10. FreeBSD... on Build From Source vs. Packages? · · Score: 2, Informative

has a great ports system which allows you to build software from the source automatically. I find with ports, you can get the latest software in a more timely fashion as a package is not always available and it can be built to use your machines entire potential. The package system is integrated into the ports system, however, so you can build your own package from the newest port then distribute it onto several machines. The other good thing about packages is for older machines with small hard drives and slow processors-you would probably run out of drive space (and patience) trying to build something like openoffice from source. That's just my experience using source and packages for a particular system.

  19. Racking up a bill on Police and Lawyers Love E-ZPass · · Score: 1

I believe the E-ZPass system allows you to put a certain amount of money into an account (if you use a check at least). So if a theif did run off with your E-ZPass, then the most he could steal would be whatever you had in your E-ZPass account.

At any rate, if your tag was stolen--I think you would notice. Tag stealing usually involves breaking into and/or stealing the car too. In that case, just report your tag (and your car!) as stolen.

  23. Re:The end of albums on Kazaa-lite Shut Down · · Score: 1

I've got a few CD's that sort of hamper ripping them into singles. The beginning of the next track is the end of the previous song. It takes some editing if you just want one song by itself, but this sort of thing plays to the idea of the whole album being the art and the songs are just a piece of it. Generally I listen to CDs in order and play them all the way through anyway. When I rip them, I keep the tracks in order too by naming the file by the track number first. I like all the songs on the CDs I have like that, so I never bothered editing them. I'd rather preserve the track as it was on the CD anyway.

  24. Windows Media? on Kazaa-lite Shut Down · · Score: 2, Insightful

My God, as a FreeBSD user I think I'd have a heart attack if all these companies started putting their online music into Windows Media format and DRM to boot. I think I speak for most if not all of the Linux and BSD users out there too. Anyway, think about it -- you're getting a "CD" that is compressed in a lossy format by about 13 times over. That is not worth 10 bucks. If you take quality into account, a $15 CD in that format is worth only $1.15.

  25. Re:Go ahead RIAA on RIAA Extends Legal Action · · Score: 1

I think paying $0.99 per track is a big rip-off. Don't expect me to pay for some lossy mp3 (or worse). There is a pretty large sacrifice in quality when you're taking a CD down to mp3 level. Some people don't care, but I would like to see these companies put out in FLAC format - that would be worth 99 cents. Once you have the FLAC you can convert it into an mp3 if you want or make a cd that is cd-quality.
