I'd like to believe that SCO didn't exactly know what they were buying.
This would still leave me with some faith in major software corporations, whereas the view of SCO knowing what they were buying and subsequently stirring up all this crap makes me want to wince.
Then again, on second thought, why would I want to have faith in a company that can't read the fine writing? They try to get my to sign my life away each EULA I click by hiding things in the fine writing.
It's like trying to barrack for a winner between Carrot Top and Rosanne Barr. Oh the humanity!
I believe they use a very complicated series of algorithms and a sequence of analyses to determine a cooefficient. They use this cooefficient in turn with a sliding scale to draw a likely number.
Interesting that the 'Best' MMO is always the one that will be released next.
Indeed. SWG was meant to embody the be-all-and-end-all of MMORPGs; a game which many people would flock to and stay with. EQ still enjoys higher numbers than SWG, whereas a newer game, Horizons, laments lower subscribership. A game which has been out for a while in Asia, and not so long in NA, FFXI enjoys great reviews and subscribers - breaking a few records I believe.
While I agree that WoW has a good chance of being the most successful new game in terms of subscribtions, considering they are aiming towards the Korean market as well as the NA market, I'd have to disagree with the ranking of the titles after that.
Lineage 2 has a very good chance to keep both EQ2 and MEO from climbing above it - Lineage (1) currently enjoys the highest subscriber levels - and if it isn't Lineage, then it's another Asian-based (Chinese I believe) MMORPG, of which I forget the name right now. Something like ***** 2?
EQ2 and MOE will enjoy a mostly NA/European subscribership, and although those markets can give good numbers, the NA market is less likely to show support for a MMORPG, especially from a "hated" developer, than the fanatical Asian market.
Or, as usual, are we only looking at an American-centric view here?
Anyone 14 or over is required to have their prints taken, and chcked every time they enter the US.
So, how long until we see 12 and 13 year old suicide bombers? Militants this age do exist, and I'm sure those that make the terrorism plans wouldn't feel to bad about sending a child to become a "martyr".
Flamebait? Pfft, I've seen posts that have designed to be flamebait not get modded as such. This was a clear, unbiased observation, you insensitive clod!
So, does this mean that their music folders are going to be a complete mess like the aisles I wander down in Wal-Mart when I visit?
Will I have barefoot pregnant mothers with no front teeth jostling me so they can download "Shania Twain's Greatest Hits" first in the queue, before me?
Will my internet connection be trampled over, causing me to pass out, as a mob of people try to download the new cut price 77c song?
We now know that Viking journeys to North America preceded Columbus' voyage by some centuries. But, again, they didn't follow up their voyages or make them known to the world at large. We also suspect some fishermen made it to North America years before Columbus. But, again, they didn't tell the world.
There was no 'world' at those times. Just a planet with dispersed and seperated communities (from small to civilization), some of which were often at war with others - which obviously made communication difficult.
Columbus was able to 'tell the world' because the monarchy of Spain had developed into a institution that allowed for them to say something, and for it to be taken as word - that is, they developed power; a power over other countries, and on par with similar monarchies of that time.
This like this happen alot. Take the discovery of Australia by white men for instance. It's generally credited to the English monarchy (the most powerful institution on the planet in 1788), but it's been found through the discovery of shipwrecks that the Danish had found Australia at least 150 years earlier. Leaving the 'white men' criteria behind, the Chinese can lay claim to discovering Australia first as well, as Chinese artifacts from the 1500s have been found in Australia.
Essentially, there are aloto f discoveries I'm sure that have been 'the first', but have not gone down in the official history book as that way because of a number of reasons - inability to tell 'the world', or even in some cases that it wasn't considered all that great by the founding community, so was only briefly mentioned in obscure texts.
But one fact remains - just because someone writes more about their discovery does not make it the first discovery or first invention. That belongs to the first person that did the feat, regardless of how many people know.
We just like to keep history all nice and neat (and not change much of it), because then we know where we have come from. Change history, and we change the definition of who we are.
Pay someone in Kenya, or for the fun of it, Nigeria (get them to help you, as you have helped them move funds) to do all the uploading for you.
These countries want internet use to increase, and as such have no such law that prohibits uploading (or perhaps not even a governing body that is so imposing as the RIAA or Canadian equivalent).
You can download your files, you stay out of jail, someone in a 3rd world country makes a little bit of money on the side, and everyone is happy.
I love it when capitalism brings the world closer. Gives me a warm feeling in my wallet.
I think Blizzard do know the meaning of alpha, and are using that time to get rid of many bugs.
On the other hand it's the majority of other MMORPG developers that don't know the meaning of alpha, or beta, or 'stable' for that matter.
Final Fantasy XI was such a breath of fresh air - I know it's been released in Japan for over a year now, but to have it released in the rest of the world with a stable launch was excellent. I'm now spoiled by it, and look forward to a smooth Blizzard launch. Lineage 2 is also looking promising, considering it's been released in Korea for a year now.
If only other developers (and publishers - they are the true criminals here) would take some time out and stop chasing the almight buck, thinking if they don't release soon they won't meet their monetary target. Here's a clue: releasing too early won't get you there either.
In terms of MMORPGs? Probably Anarchy Online. Despite the (un)forgettable launch, Funcom has done well publishing Anarchy Online, as well as its adventure hit (consitently rated one of the best adventure games) The Longest Journey.
In a continuation of my rant about the idiots that throw up their arms about computer games, I pose this question to the State of Florida and other like-minded idiots:
Since GTA:VC hit the shelves, how much of an increase in Hatian murders has occured? How much of an increase in Cuban murders has occured? And how many of all the Hatian/Cuban murders in the period since GTA:VC was released are not related to gang crime between existing rival gangs?
Answer me that, showing me a significant increase that can be attributed to the release of GTA:VC, and I'll eat my 80's Hawaiian shirt.
Before they investigate a game, they should read some studies themselves to see that a game alone won't cause someone to kill.
And where are these idiots when we see people killing Mexicans, blacks, whites, Russians, Arabs etc in movies, books and television? Are they not possible hate crimes by the definition these idiots will use to try and change/stop production of GTA:VC? You can't change rules or laws, and introduce made-up ones, just to suit your effort to garner a few votes from fanatical parents.
Besides, is there anyone on the face of the earth who might have an interest in computer games that has not seen or played GTA:VC? If there is the possibility of any damage, it has been done. The game went through the appropriate channels to get its appropriate classification (note to fanatical parents: It's an MA game! You aren't meant to get crazy when your kid plays it because you shouldn't have bought it for them in the first case!). All requirements were met for it to be sold, so no use crying about it now.
Grrr. These idiots continue to make me angry. Think I'll go load up GTA:VC and kill me some stupid white men. I'll be awaiting the knock on my door from someone charing me with a hate crime.
A HyperRescueRobot that has a top speed of 3km/hr?
Great. When can we expect other such needed inventions such as the water-proof towel and screendoors for submarines?
Rainbow Six 3 has the best product placement. Ever since I played that game I can't stop visiting Interracialporno.
Best. Advertisement. Ever.
Best advertising campaign in a video game: Pogo the Monkey in GTA.
Ever since I heard those radio ads, I've been looking for the game everywhere. I want to swing from blue dot to blue dot with my red square monkey!!!!
Oh, come on now. Don't be silly. We all know the GTA series started with GTA3. It's just like Star Wars beginning with Episode 4, isn't it?
Under an inch? Why smaller? I keep getting told, after the laughing, that bigger is better. /confused

I believe it's called the "Fanboi Factor".

Wait until about half way through the series when the main characters visit places like Tear/Illian. You'll be reading alot of passages like that.
Flamebait? Pfft, I've seen posts that have designed to be flamebait not get modded as such. This was a clear, unbiased observation, you insensitive clod!
Hmm, I'm guesing a Wal-Mart employee read this.
So, does this mean that their music folders are going to be a complete mess like the aisles I wander down in Wal-Mart when I visit?

Boy oh boy, I can hardly wait!
So, essentially, like everyone else in this thread, you don't have a short, simple answer. :p
Ahhh, hindsight, where were you when we needed you?
We now know that Viking journeys to North America preceded Columbus' voyage by some centuries. But, again, they didn't follow up their voyages or make them known to the world at large. Well, he obviously didn't play the game properly. Perhaps too honest? The original parent sounds like much more fun (and true)!
The Supreme Court, playing Bush, delivered a finishing move to Gore, splattering a mess everywhere.
I hope someone else gets a chance to play this time. Quit hogging the controller!
It wasn't a joke.
It the type of comment that game 'journalists' usually write in an effort to hype up a game and show a love for a company.
It's the same thing as saying an athlete doesn't know the meaning of 'quit'. That comment isn't a joke, but flattery.
I think Blizzard do know the meaning of alpha, and are using that time to get rid of many bugs.

Actually, I take that back. FFXI, in terms of MMORPGs and games in general, has sold very well for Square-Enix. They developed and published FFXI.
I'm sure there are other in-house publishers too, that have done fairly well. But Square-Enix takes the cake, and I look forward to Turbine's effort.
In terms of MMORPGs? Probably Anarchy Online. Despite the (un)forgettable launch, Funcom has done well publishing Anarchy Online, as well as its adventure hit (consitently rated one of the best adventure games) The Longest Journey.
Manhunt is currently on shelves in Australia; and that's with Christmas 10 days away.
