Many folks have swapped their phones at apple stores, some even as much as 4 times... the problem remains. It is not specific to iphone 3G, it affects all iphone versions. It began for everyone with the release of iphone 2.0 os and apps.
For the most part, everyone knows exactly what causes the problem. It has to do with the app install process, removal process, app store on the phone itself, and very hard app crashes.
I put the word bricked in quotes. This is a grey area situation. Because by all definitions the iphone is bricked until you go home to fix it (Which is a 4 hour process)
It is essentailly bricked until you get home, meaning you cant do a single thing with the iphone. You cant call, you cant call 911, you cant receive calls. The entire phone is broken. The OS is currupt, the apps are currupt, it is a brick.
Yes you can restore it, but you really need to see the situation for what it is... the iphone for many of us, is spending more time in the usb dock being restored than it is in service as a phone.

Apple has released a 2.01 update but it did not solve any of these issues. These bugs are all based around the installation of apps through the iphone, crashing of apps, the app store itself on the iphone, and interrupted installs. For example while installing an app on the phone, entering the app store on the phone at the same time "bricks" the phone. I say "bricks" because you can restore it, but you must be home to do it, and its an hour to 2 hour process. Yes itunes is that slow at restoring your phone to a previous backup. That is if you bothered to let itunes back up the phone, because the back up process can take 3+ hours.

The last thing anyone wants is an unstable cell phone.
We're all trying to get the word out where ever we can. Apple has been silent and unhelpful with reguard to this issue. Many iphones have been locking up since the 2.0 software update. When the iPhone locks up, it must be unlocked by docking it with your pc that contains itunes. This means no 911, no phone calls until you get back home to fix it. You lose all of your data in the proess.
This has happened continuously. Well over 16 times for myself and many others. It is now becoming a daily practice to take an hour to restore the iphone from its "bricked" state.
Please help get this word out. Apple is getting away with murder.

Linux users would be furious if this were the case. Hell the only reason we have driver support in linux, is because the furious intent on making linux compatible with all kinds of hardware, new and old... by the passionate user base. Often it is the giant companies that ignore linux driver support. Granted that is not as much the case these days... but thats because of the die hard user base that forced hardware to work on linux for generations.
Its common for a shitty company to pump and dump hardware... but Nvidia? I would have never expected them to just drop support for a fairly recent (at the time) chipset.
Luckily i run vista 64 on a quad core intel machine as well. I keep the older amd machine with the nforce board for web use, extra render muscle when needed etc.
The nforce 3 issue, was a big deal at the time. Users were furious, but of course their dollars were forced out of their wallet earlier than expected... to make up for Nvidia's laziness.
This is good for the US economy. How is this bad? Their money is worth more than ours, and we are an IP based economy... so we have every right to sell to these countries at high prices. It employs our US citizens (a tleast in theory)
Its no different then our own companies, making stuff in China for $10 cost, $1 labor, and selling it to us for $500 dollars.

And this is important to note. 64bit XP is not better than 64bit Vista because 64bit xp doesnt have good driver support.
So for some one like me that needs a 64bit os, for lots of ram (3d animation, modelling, photography, video editing). XP sure runs faster... but at this point... XP is still a 32bit OS, because the 64bit version doesnt support a lot of hardware. It doesnt have drivers for my canon printer (s9000) but Vista 64 comes with the driver by default.
So in a sense for us 64bit users... there is no XP, because XP is still really a 32bit os. XP64 is nice, but it needs driver support.
I'm tempted to run XP64 to get some speed back. Vista definitely eats up some performance but it is the better 64bit os in terms of drivers and future support.
I generally like Vista. Its flawed though and i hope that Microsoft will fix the silly memory management which just gobbles of all of your ram and never releases it to applications (they say it does... but it does not)
Going back to XP... is a bit primitive feeling. Vista has some nice UI enhancements, but i would rather see Microsoft do more with it. Its anoying to always switch folders to detail list mode, and some just show the music details... this is very anoying.
Even if you switch a folder to show a detail list... It would be nice for Vista to auto adjust each information column to display the information properly. I know you can right click on it, and have it adjust... but you need to do this for every folder.
XP is too barebones, and Vista is too bloated.
But i do like vista... i dont love it... and often i hate it.... but i tend to like it.
The DRM shit has to go, and they need to focus on system performance and ui rather than worry about stupid shit like weather or not i can steel movies or music from their data pathways. Nvidia doesnt support their Nforce chipsets. Folks like me, who are running Vista on their Nforce 3 boards learned that the hard way.
I wont miss Nvidia's chipsets, because i never thought they were serious about it in the first place.

I know MS says in order to get blu-ray on windows, they had to encrypt the video pathways, thus rendering millions of crt monitors, landfill material. I find this disgusting, especially from BILL GATES, who is supposedly a humanitarian with an interest in helping man and the environment. This is so they can say "Well the FCC wont let us throttle P2P users, so we're going to raise prices for high bandwidth users, and cut bandwidth for everyone at the current rate"

Our only hopes is to force these companies to pay heavy tax penalties for employing over seas. After all, they are taking our dollars, and giving nothing in return. If they do not give back the dollars through employing our people, then it is in our interest to force them to pay us heavy tax fines for taking our money.

Thanks to voip, telcoms cant charge ridiculous long distance service fees or for extra phone features, so easily. I'm using vonage and i'll keep doing so as long as it keeps me out of the stupid bullshit contracts these phone companies like to force us into.
But now they've simply moved their shadey shit business tactics, which is all bullshit, into the cell phone market. Ridiculous so called "taxes" or "government fees"... and charging us ridiculous amounts of money for text messages, and other services...

I made this point in a comment posted to the other story about ISP's blocking newsgroups due to child porn.
The truth is... Its just a trojan horse. Its not at all the real cause. Its a bandwidth issue, and piracy issue. It has nothing to do with protecting children.
Most people are not attracted to children. This may be a shock to the news media, but most adults are attracted to each others sexual appetite and physical appearance. There is nothing attractive about having sex with a child. Its a demented psychological issue that has nothing to do with the newsgroups.
Most people in the newsgroups are trading "of legal age" porn, movies, music, software, emulation roms, linux distros, windows betas, shareware, personal photos, personal videos, knowledge, programming code, user made content for games etc.
Most people are not jacking to children in the newsgroups and we all know this.
To assume that any given network avenue is predominantly child porn oriented is ridiculous when child porn is a very very small minority of civilization. Most adults lust after other adults. Until that is proven otherwise... and i doubt it ever will.... Then how in the hell can we allow this bullshit "anti child porn" movement conquer the newsgroups.
This is a political and economic power play for retaking bandwidth and controlling and eliminating a popular user based distribution system, and communications "forum".
Simply ask this... How much newsgroupd bandwidth is due to child pornography? Then compare it to the amount of bandwidth used by "of legal age" pornography.... and add in all of the .flac, .mp3, .warez, .movies, .divx, .xvid, .mkv, linux, newsgroups.
Child porn is a unmeasurable minute fraction of newsgroup traffic. The majority of it, is in other material, such as the above mentioned.
These companies dont like it, and they're taking a page from the politicians who for years said "Its for the good of our children", as an excuse to destroy and eliminate personal freedoms, and gain politcal power etc. After all, who could refuse the idea of helping children!?... Which if you think about it.. supports my point that most people arent out to fuck children. They never were.
