CIO, "Linux, what's Linux?" Engineer, "Its that system I have been trying to tell you about that can save us time and money" CIO, "Ok, tell me about it then" 10 Mins later... "Ok do it, lets see how it goes."
End of Story. And even though the 'facts' are biased, lets hope most CIO's can consider both sides of the story:)
I also had a nightmare at one stage with Hotmail. I logged on one day and everything in sent items was gone. It was due to 'changes in service'. I was not amused and of course there is no way one can actually contact Hotmail - hell I don't know where this woman found their number! I'm impressed.
Needless to say I changed provider which is also free and gives me 6Mb instead of 2 (mail.vu).
I think what's more important is what window manager he uses. I would recommend throwing a little more RAM in the machine and using ICE or XFCE which should do the trick.
RAM is dead cheap these days and any distro should do - just use a light window manager and he should be A-OK.
IBM are pro Linux whereas DELL and HP are selling Linux just to keep certain customers happy but are ultimately MS puppies.
"HP recommends Microsoft Windows XP for business" is all too often in adverts for their hardware and they couldn't be more in each other's pockets (HP and MS). But this is business and HP and DELL will do whatever it is that makes them the most money without putting themselves in 'jeopardy'.
Whereas IBM has a history of conflict with MS and are in no way trying to keep in the MS good books. Linux is the perfect vehicle for them to sell services and at the same time disrupt the MS server (and soon desktop) monopoly.
When a company advertises Linux on TV you know they are serious about it.
Does anyone know if these standards they are developing open? If they are and if they are better than existing standards then whats everyone worrying about?
Thats right. It will pick up all your hardware and even install office, net and other productivity apps which you would not have received with your win 2k box.
And it won't have to be rebuilt every few months from lag like win2k. Sorta like mac OSX - just works.
I have installed it on a few machines already. The average end user who just wants to surf the net may not see massive changes if he/she used FC2.
The changes are in speed and polish and of course updated packages. And GIMP2 is wonderful too.
It is however an important release because it contains major updates to both desktops and the kernel which is vital for testing purposes so these updates will only be getting better and better!
I gotta say, I prefer it when the slashdot folk dont jump the gun. I couldn't get the torrent going from the first announcement on Saturday & got all excited for nothing:(
Finally. KDE.3.2, Gnome 2.6 and kernel 2.6 out to the masses! So much easier than using Konstruct, Garnome etc for most new linux users.
Can we consider this the debut of these three technolgies to the masses? I like to think so. I can't wait to install it on my machine, my brothers machine, my mothers machine my....
We should all be proud of the Linux, KDE and Gnome community and send our thanks:)
Thank you!
Yes, and the entire article is concentrated on his (misunderstanding) of spatial nautilis. Just pity he based his article on one aspect of a thoroughly enjoyable desktop.
Rather narrow review of a desktop I would say.
I am from the UK and find that pushing the idea of thin client computing using LTSP difficult to get across. I suspect one reason may be the fact that cost over here may not be a big issue and people still don't mind spending ridiculous money on computers.
What is the LTSP climate like in Egypt and are there lots of Internet Cafe's/Community centres that use/or would show interest in using LTSP to set up inexpensive internet access like in Brazil or other countries?
It would be great if everyone switched to Linux, sure. But lets face it - it won't happen in the foreseeable future.
It would be better for people to limit their exposure to the internet by using safer alternatives to IE and MSN messenger like Firefox and GAIM.
I firmly believe Microsoft have done us a favour.

Good luck.

Are those last two patented by Microsoft?

Projects like this are really important. There is no Bengali support in Windows and so we are looking at this to provide Bengali in our environment.
Kinda like Zulu and Xhosa in South Africa - its not financially viable for Microsoft to write those locales in Windows.
Just another sign of the goodness in software freedom.
