  3. Re:More Genetic Engineering, Less Special Ed on UK Report Suggests Designer Offspring · · Score: 2, Interesting

I hate to bleed my heart out to slashdot, but here's my little rant, and I would appreciate comments. I know that there are exceptions to every case but it is only logical for me to stand for 'life' if it meant defending my very existance :-)

I'm disabled. I am profoundly deaf - a little less so on one ear, which I wear a hearing aid. However, despite my deafness, I do not use sign language and so, after about 2 or 3 years in a "special-ed" preschool, I was mainstreamed into the public school system, in which, I've stayed ever since.

I don't have special assistance - I can tie my shoes, read, write (with the occasional spelling, grammar mistake, like in this post :-) ). Some people were quick to judge - some people gave up hope right away without truly knowing who I was. I can't hear all the time - I need to use closed captioning, and devices called FM systems that amplify voices in the classroom.

And oh, now you want to know what this "second-class" citizen can do? I graduated from high-school with a 4.0 GPA. I volunteer and work in many many extracurricular activities. I even play piano on the side after getting my diploma in piano performance. I won various graduation awards - none out of sympathy or the like - but departmental prizes and merit awards. I shall not bore you with all the details for the sake of time. And currently, I'm in university, getting ready to enter the honours computer science program with co-op on the side.

The point that I'm trying to make is that if we had more people like you - I would not have even had a chance to show the world what I was capable of. Sure, I grant you that I do 'suffer' in the mildest sense of the word - but I would deem it no worse than the common allergies that seem to plague everybody else (of which I have none). When I finally do get a job, I will be a full tax-paying citizen who will fully contribute to the state. If this is the case, then why am I not equal under law? There are many more, who have taken their otherwise "perfect" life (I'm not talking about those who started from unfortunate circumstances from the very start) and ruined it forever, becoming dependant on the welfare of others. Where is the justice in this?

I grant you that perhaps I'm the exception of many - there are many other people, who in my condition, have not been so successful - and who have not been able to cope with rejection. Rejection from nay-sayers who deem us useless to society - without chance to prove ourselves. I am most indebted to my parents for their support and for their perseverance in what must have been a trying time at first. Sure, call it slippery-slope, but I think that the choice isn't quite as black & white as you might make it seem.

  7. handwriting vs typing speeds. on Is Typing a Necessary Skill? · · Score: 1

With handwriting and voice recognition technologies, is using a QWERTY keyboard with nine out of ten fingers something worth knowing anymore?"

I don't know about you, but comparing my handwriting and typing speeds, I find I can type much faster than I can handwrite.

Oddly enough, as a sidenote, this proves rather inconvenient. I can type about as fast as I can think, and as a result, the words spill out onto the screen. When I handwrite, while I'm writing, I can formulate the words I'm going to use in the time that I'm writing the words before, which leads to higher quality writing overall. However, when I'm typing, I rarely have time to consider the words I use, hence, the tendency towards verbal vomit.

As a result, for long bodies of writing, I usually do a rough draft by hand, and then transcribe it into a word processing for editing. Nothing beats being able to bck^H^Hackspace and forward delete!

Of course, we could use OCR (optical character recognition) for that transcribing process, but current systems show little improvement in recognizing human handwriting than their predecessors. Not to mention I want to be able to keep my current handwriting style and not have to change it to some "graffiti" style.

In short, typing IS a necessary skill.

I'm going to be looking into this since I have a Phonak Claro hearing aid that I bought a year ago. Finally can use those cellphones now!

For those of you who are wondering, hearing aid users experience an extremely loud crackling sound when using the cell phone normally. If we use the telephone switch which make use of built in telecoils in some cell phones, a loud buzzing sound overpowers the voice coming out of the phone. It's very annoying indeed. Some phones, amazingly, do not have these problems. I once tried my friends phone made by Samsung, and it was amazingly clear! Just a bit of advice, in case, anyone was wondering :)

  15. Re:Cell phone RF bad... Bluetooth good. on Build Your Own Bluetooth Hearing Aid · · Score: 5, Interesting

I am a hearing aid user so I can comment on this. Being severely/profoundly deaf will get you exceptions in the rule.

I'm certainly allowed to use my hearing aid on planes. Furthermore, I also own an FM system, basically a sort of wireless microphone that can speak directly to my hearing aid. Same 3 pin connector that the author refers to connect to a DAI shoe, btw. It is certainly handy on planes, and there are provisions in the rules that airlines have for disabled people.

Personally, I've seen, as I've travelled with other deaf people, others use text pagers in the air to communicate. Definately, the rule is a little blurry when it comes to what technologies are allowed, but airlines do bend over backwards to accomodate us.

And a word on the bluetooth issue. I heard from my audiologist that Widex www.widex.com is coming out with hearing aids with built in bluetooth. This was a while ago, so perhaps, they are out now. Not only can bluetooth be used to stream audio, but also to configure the hearing aid on the fly. Some hard of hearing people suffer from fluctuating hearing losses and used to have to visit an audiologist to get their hearing aid reprogrammed each time they wanted it changed. Now, we can use our bluetooth enabled devices such as PDA's and laptops to do this.

This is a matter of personal preference really.

One obvious reason is that Yellow Dog is completely free as in beer and OSX is not. You have to purchase every second update and it is not *completely* open source. Even if it IS apple, the magic words, "open-source" does make people listen up.

If compatibility with industry standard programs such as Microsoft Office and Photoshop is not needed, and if the UI is unimportant to you, then linux might be an option.

People use OSX to have the best of both worlds: to have the familiar "hacker" interface, the shell, and also have the convenience of programs. If you're going to run a server, linux will run faster, without Cocoa or X Windows, no question about it. Or, if you're addicted to KDE or fluxbox, why use the Aqua interface then? (yes, there IS an X11 server for apple, but hey, it is an alternative...)

The most convincing reason, I think, is the rpm format. You can use programs like yum although I believe that is for i386, and redhat/fedora, but certainly, it derived from the original yellow dog updater (would anyone care to provide a link?). You can keep your system up to date easily with a known technology, set as a cron job, perhaps.
