I think the key part of his statement that you're missing is "If you've got four or five years..."
The first sentence in your comment is that it's not impossible because you've got 20 years and... That doesn't debunk his comment. The only way to do that would be to say "I have 5 years exp. and am an expert in this, this, this, and this." Of course, nobody would believe you then:)
I can't get to any Yahoo pages with Firefox. This is really annoying to me, and I haven't been able to find any other indication of this on the web and I don't know what to do to it.
It's really bad though, I can't get to www.yahoo.com, mail.yahoo.com, or even any of the many yahoo stores. My boss has the same problem with Firefox, too. We're both using 1.0PR and we've also tried it Mozilla. I also have this problem at home.
But like I said before, I haven't seen anybody else who's had this problem which is the weirdest part to me.
Has anybody else had this problem? What did you do about it?
Sometimes easier said than done. For instance, my brother (who is just about as non-technical as you get) won't use anything but Internet Explorer. I've shown him Firefox and what it can do, and why I think it's better than IE. However, Internet Explorer works better for the things that he wants to use it for. (Which is 99% fantasy sports.)
That said, I also have plenty of friends that I have shown Firefox to who love it. And I've also run in to people who don't know the difference. My best friend's girlfriend has always had a Mac and she just switched to a PC (don't know why..) and we changed the IE icon on her desktop ("the internet icon") to launch Firefox, so she doesn't know and it works fine. We figured that would be best since she hasn't, for the most part, had to worry about the dangers of IE.
IM, how original... but I guess they can add their own twist to it.
Google's reputation was built from their search engine. Not exactly an original idea, but they did it better than anybody else. Gmail, web-based mail... Not very original either, but they've done something with it that nobody else has. So isn't it feasible that they could revolutionize IM the same way?
With all of the great ideas that come out of Google, I believe they can do anything.
do you actually think that anybody in the Slashdot community would use Office if it were ported over to Linux?
I actually (sort of) dealt with this over the weekend. You see, there's a lot of Xbox games out/coming out that I really want (Fable, Halo2, KOTOR2, etc) but I haven't allowed myself to buy an Xbox because it's made by Microsoft. But then I got to thinking, really I don't hate Microsoft. I just hate Windows... and IE... and Outlook. But other than that, I have no beef.
If Office were on Linux I could port all my end users to Linux without issue.
I completely agree. Think about everything that your average user uses their computer for. You get internet/email and office, and a couple other programs such as Quicken... and games.
If you have Office, it makes it so much easier for the user because instead of having to learn ALL new programs, they just have to use a different internet browser.
I downloaded AbiWord and the first document I opened to try it out with happened to have a table of contents at the beginning, and it was totally mangled. Not only were the styles messed up, but there was an error after each line stating that it could not find TOC something or other.
OpenOffice definitely seems better to me, but I've had problems with tables, graphics, etc. This only happens when going back and forth between Word, though. You can easily avoid this because OpenOffice lets you export to PDF, which will look the same no matter where it's viewed. So, the way I see it, OpenOffice only has problems when you're collaborating on an "advanced" document with somebody using Word.
It's a common mistake if you think about it. Let's say I'm browsing around left-handed (...). I go to delete my last search of "xxx" for something that incorporates "free" and "69". I don't hit backspace enough, miss the space bar, and hit the keys in the wrong order, but it's a reach to "9" with the left hand, so you might accidently hit "8". This has honestly never happened to you?
More along the lines of an Ask Slashdot for geek advice. An Ann Linus, if you will.
Oh yea, that's a lot better idea! I bet that would be a lot of fun because you know that slashdotters have a lot of interesting problems, and EVERYBODY's got plenty of interesting advice to give.
Hmm... there's one thing that would stop this from being fun though. I don't necessarily want to read about geek nerd-problems (i.e. I'm trying to build X but can't get Y to work), but if it's not along those lines then it becomes irrelevant. I don't know, maybe not because it would still be "Stuff that matters" to nerds. Anyway, I like it!
I suspect you will not lose much weight if you play it with your keyboard
Haha, I just thought about that Bud Light commercial with the mini treadmill that you run your fingers on to burn of the carbs. You could have a desktop finger DDR mat!
Filesharing is most definitely NOT illegal. What is illegal is the redistribution of copyrighted materials, which unfortunately is what people think of when they hear "filesharing". But seriously, if you take out that aspect of filesharing, there is nothing illegal nor unethical about it.

A windows box that hasn't been patched since 1995, you say?
Umm, he didn't say. He said he has an NT box from 1995 and it never crashes.

I'm no bugologist or anything, but isn't that thing an inch worm? Caterpillars walk with their little legs, not scoot along like that.
But as I said, IANAB.
you don't have them using Firefox already.

yeah. :/ one look at the duct tape around my glasses and she ran out screaming.

You can't be a "programmer" and also be "self-employed"?
It's not a contradiction, you're reading into it. It doesn't suggest that they will become self-employed programmers, it just says self-employed.

Panty sniffing is not a problem
Spoken like a true panty sniffer...
I can beat that. I had a 486dx-25 with only 8mb RAM that I put 95 on.
:)
I was hurting until I ran dblspace and put RAM Xtender (or some other shitty program of that nature) on there.
I found it hard to remember the names of other search engines that I could use though.
Search engine? What are you talking about? Anyway... is there someplace else I can go to google for stuff??
What about xfree86 by itself is adult content?

Or just do what I do and wear pants with inside liners (like a bathing suit).
Where does one get a good pair of pants with liners?
It gets me when people write "Athalon" instead of "Athlon." Is it so damn hard?
I still use the Celeron...
I think you mean "Celron"...
Ah, but if you watch it a second time, they want you to pay twice!
Oh yea? How're they gonna do that with a monthly subscription?

Does anybody know of any other games that use the Konami code? I know it works for Contra and Life Force, but couldn't think of anything else...
What is it you look for in your nerd? ... Maybe we should open a topic on Slash for advice
Are you proposing something along the lines of "Ask Slashdot: How do I get laid?"
File sharing is definately ILLEGAL!

Relatively hot? You hear? C'mon...
Psh.. only 19 terabytes? I _was_ excited, but now...
