Now before we all agree that they suck and start the conspiracy of how much MS paid them to switch back... Perhaps they have some valid points here. What can the Linux movement do to curb the switchbacks, and address some of these concerns?
I'm sorry but I have said this a thousand times, windows is not ready for the desktop. Every so often I install the newest incarnation XP, vista, what have you, hoping that they have gotten their act together but they have not. Until MS can make an operating system that 'just works' without grepping through cryptic registry keys or deciding what antivirus/spyware programs to run it just won't be good enough for grandma. And don't get me started on package management! Theres no standard way to install software, do I click setup.exe, setup.msi , install.bat ? Windows has come a long way, maybe 2008 will be the year of the MS Desktop.
if you mod me funny instead of insightful then your a jerk!
Now, don't get me wrong, theres not a single MS product that comes to mind that I would consider to be all that innovative, but lets give credit where credit is due. Yes this idea has been done before. Yes this idea has been implemented better. But MS is currently the only company thats pushing this as a viable product. There can be a zillion different MAKE projects and DIY guides to make this thing only better, but if you want a future where you can walk into the store and purchase a multi touch screen table top device, this is clearly the OSFP to do so. MS may be an evil corporation with a crappy OS, but in this case they are moving technology forward, cut them a break.
I recently gave Gentoo a try, I thought the handbook was pretty nice, the whole experience wasn't nearly as painful as some people let on, but then again I'm no stranger to BASH. I even got to a gnome desktop relatively quickly. However, I found that i forgot to put jpg or give and a few other little things in the USE flags that wound up making things just plain retarded. Like opening up a image viewer that didn't understand images. While I do think there is a niche for Gentoo, It just isn't my box. I've spent countless years breaking and fixing my machine for fun, now I have a wii, and when I sit down in front of my computer it should be as hassle free as possible.
--it's a safe bet Apple doesn't want you as a customer anyway. hahahahahaha
rofl
I'm sure that theres not a single man woman or child that apple DOESN'T want to sell stuff to, Corporations don't share your fanboy, they just exploit it.
Ha. well thats the idiotic IT thought process that most people have. But lets look at the reality. On our level a ds3 is broken down into 28 T1's.... and *GASP* DSL connections! zomg they all go through the same piece of equipment! DSL's just get the bad deal of getting an artificially cap on their upload, sorry its an industry standard:)
I work at a large ISP, and a T1 , (which by the way is a fantasy name, its actually just a DSL line.) costs more than said DSL for one reason and one reason only: S.L.A. You are not paying big for bandwidth, taxes, or anything other than the fact that theres a contract that states that when it goes down, it gets fixed in a timely manner. No such provision is taken for DSL.
Yeah your right, but those moms and pops and myspace users all know at least one quasi technical person who tells them that rhederic about it not being 'quiet ready' , i actively convert 'newbies' to linux especially if they have no computer knowledge. The learning curve for general use is perfectly fine in ubuntu, and they end up calling waaaay less with problems. Microsoft has done this awesome job of insisting on this not being the case, and even people who know better cant help but spout out that that crap.
windows is absolutely crap, and end users hate it.
they hate paying people to clean spyware, they hate re-installing thier OS's. They want to surf the web and watch cartoons.
Its not really a long way to go. Ubuntu has already gotten way more usable and intuitive than Windows is or ever will be (try walking a noob though a registry edit). The thing is there is a double standard when it comes to linux, and that is that it needs to be perfect. Linux is and always be a work in progress, allways changing to incorporate the newest and greatest thing. This will always leave some little quarks in some of the process. It probably should have just put sudo in front in the error message, but do we in IT really have such a strong desire to completely phase ourselves out of end user support?
In other words, GET YOUR HANDS OUT MY POCKETS!
Initial plans are to produce 3,000 cars per year. Is there a reason for that? That seems to be the way things like this go. We have a world changing invention thats super cheap and safe! We'll make a couple of 'em and see how it works out. . .
Or maybe theres some validity to the theories that 'the powers that be' keep this kind of thing under wraps and prevent it from really taking off, because something like this could really upset the balance of power in the world currently.
I don't see what the big deal is anyways. I've been playing racing games for years, and if there is one thing that i learned its that no matter how bad of a wreck you get in, you can always just start the track over.
I recently installed feisty fawn to take a look, what I found disturbed me greatly. From install to finish I never had to touch a terminal. I got my 3d drivers, aixgl and video codecs working all in the comfort of a gui. This is unacceptable to me! If i don't have to edit my fstab, apt, or xorg config files, how will i look super smart to someone sitting over my shoulder? I switched from windows so that I would look smart dammit!
I'm not sure what the big fuss is, first of all, if you're a linux user, wouldn't you prefer to install your distro-of-choice yourself rather than whatever sort of nonsense a company like dell is going to put on it (remember that the windows they stick on their machines are filled with crapware) also if your really computer savvy don't you build your own from parts? if not, goto a more mom and pop type shop where you get something worth your money and upgradeable. I guess I don't see the problem with these companies catering towards their target market: People who don't care.
even still, you have to buy the loop from the telco, they still get theirs for the physical line.

HAHA, that actually made me spit soda on my monitor laughing.
no haha tag?

I've checked all over beryl's website http://www.beryl-project.org/ and Ubuntu's http://www.ubuntu.org/ and I'm beginning to think they may be separate entities. weird.
torrent please?
At the risk of coming of as a troll... Wasn't this on dig like a week ago? And is this really news?
where is the 'duh' tag on this one?

let me be the first to say . ..
Ha-Ha!
avoid the vista 'upgrade' rush! step one: browse to distrowatch. step two: download flavor-of-choice step three: enjoy!
When does the ps4 come out?
