No, you missed the point... It has _NO_ drm in it at all
The _ONLY_ reason that it cannot play copy protected CD's is that it detects that the first track is ISO Data and starts looking down the directory structure for *.mp3 files, which are, in most cases, not there (some music CD's have low quality mp3 versions of the music there)
Copying the data and re-burning it to a non copy protected source couldn't really be described as a hack, it's just a change of media to a format which won't confuse the player
As for knowing how to copy CD's and even convert them into mp3 format, I think your estimation of 95% of the population is a bit high... I suspect it to be more like 50% (taking into account those that don't even own a computer) and on/. maybe 1
And why has it taken so long for mp3 car stereos to come out?
ermm... I have had an mp3 player in my car for two and a half years now (a $300 Kenwood if you must know [now $200]) and the only problem I have had with it so far is that it won't play copy protected CDs, as these have a data track on them which throws the player.
The way around that, of course, is to rip them to mp3 and burn them back to an ISO formatted disk, along with another 13 hours, or so, of music
I do find that emerge is a wonderful tool for installing with, however, I think they still need to do some work on the installation guide... I managed to get my gentoo box up running KDE and SAMBA (+some other stuff I require) but, the lack of a decent troubleshooting guide, and my relative inexperience with how Linux actually DOES what it does, means that I'm buggered if I can get the sound to work in an X session.
Just shows you, eh. I loved TNG and Voyager, but DS9, IMO, sucked a big one... The only thing it had going for it was O'Brien and Worf, and even then, Worf didn't show up until halfway through
I think they should consider another series like TNG but maybe set further into the future... New toys and (hopefully) fresh ideas
So, if I unnecessarily sucked billions of dollars out of the public (many of whom couldn't afford to pay me), then publicly gave a small amount of it to charity, would you take your hat off to me too?
Probably, yes. I would also argue that, when put in his position, many of the peeps on/. would have made similar choices to Bill and would probably be just as insanely rich
I'm not saying that you're opinion is any less valid than mine, but, CEO's (chairpersons, etc.) of large corporations are inherently evil in there place of work. That's shouldn't be a reflection on their personal lives and what they do there... How many other people in similar positions to Bill are doing the same thing, I wonder...
Another thing to remember is that the Gates foundation is, AFAIK, funded by his personal fortune and not that of M$, aside from the staff discount he must get
If Microsoft are being criticised or not... The plain and simple fact of the matter is that the Gates foundation has helped put PC's into the hands of people who would not otherwise use one.
Whether they run nothing but Microsoft software, or something else, is not an issue, IMHO
Call him what you like (and I'm sure some of you will) he's doing a good thing here and I, for one, will take my hat of to the guy
...these new observations will be most useful for the planning of the delivery of the Huygens probe - now approaching the Saturn system on the NASA/ESA Cassini spacecraft and scheduled for descent to Titan's surface in early 2005.
Some information, whatever the quality, is ALWAYS better than no information at all
Yeah... They could have at least gone down to accounts and stamped 'Received' on them all
Reminds me of a suprise 40th Birthday party we had for a friend of mine... He was suprised, because it was held in October and his birthday wasn't until March... He was more suprised because he was only 34...
Ermm... I'm pretty sure I've already seen the documentary about all the weapons in the originals (how they made the sounds and light show and all that). They're just filling the DVD up with old stuff to make it look like they've been doing *something* for the past two years
I assume that you wouldn't mind somebody reading through what you do have, etc... Maybe even sending e-mails on your behalf...?
I did this once to a senior manager who NEVER logged out or locked his Windows PC when he was away from his desk... I sent a mail to the MD with the subject field 'I QUIT'
Fortunately for him, the MD was also in on the prank and he didn't lose his job, but, it could so easily have been abused by someone else
The manager in question still leaves his PC unlocked when he leaves his desk, though... There's no telling some people
British law allows the Queen to give the award to anyone she likes, however, you cannot use title 'Sir' unless you are a full British citizen (although you can still append KBE to your name).
Put in command of a futuristic aircraft carrier replete with landing vehicles, your mission is simple: find and kill your counterpart, an enemy carrier of even greater power than your own. During the game you must capture islands, build a logistic network that will keep you supplied with the equipment and reinforcements.
Each bit has two states, on or off (1 or 0, call them what you like) with me so far?
There are four bits in the example that you have given. By switching them on and off in interesting ways, you can make 16 different binary combinations
Didn't they make a shuttle a few years back? Before the wall came down.
I seem to remember them launching something which looked a LOT like the US shuttle, orbiting a few times and returning it safely to earth. The big shouting point for USSR (at the time) was that it was capable of doing all of this unmanned, which the US shuttle still cannot do.
I also remember seeing more recently that it was currently sitting in a playground being a tourist attraction, not unlike the US shuttle Enterprise.

It would be funnier if it wasn't so true...

Still, my philosophy is 'This is how we learn'

...Go to Saturn in the book, where Dave encountered the monolyth in between Titan and Saturn...?
Like the article says...
Some information, whatever the quality, is ALWAYS better than no information at all
Yeah... Right after the new crew came aboard, tried to fire up their xbox and blew the circuit breaker
Yeah... They could have at least gone down to accounts and stamped 'Received' on them all

They could learn from the Etch-a-Sketch...
To format, merely shake the cube to remove the data.
To save your data indefinately, don't shake the cube

I gave up using fans years ago... Too inefective against the awesome power of my brain
Now I use Liquid cooling (you may know it as beer) which has the effect of not only cooling, but also negating the general awesomeness
I call it, improving standards by lowering expectations.
It would be interesting to find out if blind people (from birth) are able to visualise the thing that they are doing...
Obviously their brains still work just as well as a sighted person, but, do their methods of storing memories differ in any way...
LOL!

If you want the maximum speed out of processor, surely assembly would blow the socks of ANY other language...
$0.02
What the RIAA or there international equivalents will think of this...
Raid everyone with a Pentium 2 or less to see if they have illegal music on them...?
:-)
Carrier command v2.0... AT LAST!!!
Put in command of a futuristic aircraft carrier replete with landing vehicles, your mission is simple: find and kill your counterpart, an enemy carrier of even greater power than your own. During the game you must capture islands, build a logistic network that will keep you supplied with the equipment and reinforcements.
Doesn't sound that far fetched, now, does it...?
OK... I'll try this way...
Each bit has two states, on or off (1 or 0, call them what you like) with me so far?

Maths is 4 bits X 2 states = 8 states
Nope... They're bob on the money...
0000 = 0 and 1111 = 15... There are only actually 8 states, if you count them
Unfortunately Peter jones isn't around anymore... I'd quite like to see Andrew Sachs or somebody else with a newsreader/documentary voice.

I resisted the urge to put USS Enterprise :-)
Ahhh.. But what is then to stop the Chinese from buying all the bits and reassembling them to launch their own craft...
