The Pre does not require or need jailbreaking. To install homebrew apps, you simply enable developer mode. Instructions can be found on Palm's website. So in one case you have an officially supported way of installing 3rd party applications, and in the other case you have the jailbreaking hacks and everything that that entails.
Palm has openly supported the homebrew community and made positive references to applications that exist in that space.
So yes, it is very different from iPhone jailbreaking.
You don't think Apple knows what applications you have installed? Do you remember that you can ONLY buy applications through Apple's store and that there is no way on Earth that they don't have a record of those purchases. And location services? Do you even know how cell phone towers work?
Hate to break this to you, but the 1.2 WebOS update that should be hitting any day now will break mytether (the tethering app for the Pre). They have updated their modem software and mytether was a casualty.
The author has already released an update, but still.
... for Yummy FTP. The reason was that cyberduck would download 2 Megs of a 1 Meg file and then fail. I would then find that the 1MB file had downloaded correctly. In addition, the fault tolerance was poor and all around offered a slightly less refined user experience. Cyberduck now is a great FTP program and I recommend it to people who use FTP rarely. For people who use it regularly, I recommend Yummy - which is the best FTP program I've ever used on any platform.
After explaining the NSA's secret data collection rooms to my father, he gave me the same reasoning. "Well I don't search for anything bad on the Internet, so I have nothing to worry about." I turned to his computer and started saying out loud and typing at the same time; "HOW TO MAKE BOMBS THAT WILL BLOW UP LARGE BUILDINGS."
He started yelling "No! Don't search for that!"
For some reason he still didn't see the problem there.
Isn't this against the merchant agreements for most major credit cards? I'm pretty sure that the CC information is not to be transmitted to any 3rd parties and it certainly isn't supposed to be transferred or stored in plain text.
Then again, DHS has consistently demonstrated that they believe rules don't apply to them.
Okay, they can have my data, but guess what else they're getting? A whole lot of randomly generated crap data. What's this? I was in antarctica only moments ago and now I'm on the beach in Hawaii? I'm opening hundreds of apps a minute - all of which are crashing immediately?
They can have my data, they just won't be able to make it useful.
Laven! Had you seen episode 20 season 6 of Star Trek: The Next Generation (which appear to be what you're referring to), you would know that life through the galaxy was seeded from the same genetic material millions of years ago, explaining why all the alien races look similar.
The seed for all those life forms was taken from earth by the preservers and seeded on other M class planets.
I saw this message today an decided to upgrade my browser. That's the internet, right? I called AOL and told them to upgrade my internet please. They happily obliged. It seems like the same internet to me and I still get the message on youtube.
That's silly. You don't have to support Windows apps to compete with Windows, nor would you want to. The idea is to start from the ground up with a better system. Google said that old operating systems were designed for an era before the web, and that they wanted to make something that is designed around all the new technologies. Furthermore, they said apps would run in your browser and therefore be cross-platform compatible.
They have exactly zero interest in enabling users to run Windows applications.
The best approach is not to let them know any kind of business interest is involved. Have your 15 year old son broker the deal and claim the name is his nickname and he wants to start a blog for his friends. You could probably get it for a few hundred bucks depending on what the domain name is.
This guy is like and old man standing on his lawn shaking his fist as the future drives by and lobs a large bowling ball into his mailbox.
I, for one, have always missed keystroke-level chat. That's how it used to work in the old days of dial up BBSes and it WAS more efficient. I didn't have to wait for some slow-typer to finish hunting and pecking before I could start calling them retarded.
Mod parent up. It's not the OS's fault. It's carrier - induced BS. As delivered, Windows Mobile is an extremely open OS that follow the development ethics of the desktop.
It's the equivalent of Dell shipping PCs with custom XP installs that don't allow USB drives or something. Not Microsoft's fault.
Personally, I believe this is due more to stupidity than altruism on Microsoft's part, but it's better for the community. A modified Hanlon's razor perhaps applies?
P.S. I'm no Windows Mobile fanboy, but I do own a WM phone for this reason.
This isn't that revolutionary. I have an AT&T Tilt that can share its 3G connection via WiFi using a program called WMWifiRouter. Since my data plan is "unlimited" and only $15/mo, it's a way better deal than this "new" tech.
Doesn't space warping happen all the time already? Gravity causes space and time to warp IIRC from a book I read recently (the elegant universe by Brian Greene - ftw!)
So if we can recreate the conditions of the big bang in a earth-based collider, how difficult would it be, really, to build a huge one in space in the form of a space ship? I mean, I know it's not as simple as that, but the biggest pieces seem to be there at some infant level.
LHC will show us the possibilities, then we just need to build it in space. Better yet, build it on earth and use it to get to space. Better than rocket fuel!

So when can we meet up? Wait, are you cute?

Difficult to coordinate? Are you telling me the engineers there use the system they're supposed to be running as their sole means of communication?
Egads man.
Trying to disconnect me from the Internet is like trying to keep the Ocean from touching the shore.
Not gonna happen.

When asked "Which browser do you use?" Most people respond "Google." Telling people to upgrade their Google is only going to confuse them.
I'm afraid the only way to truly get rid of IE6 is wait for all the old people to die.

Chrome OS will be released this year, according to Google's announcement. It just won't come stock on any netbooks until mid 2010.

Put a Windows sticker on it.

Seems like if you gave the problem to some of your engineers they could come up with an automated way of finding the best entries.
THINK ABOUT IT MAN!
Okay but if you know X will kill you in a month, and Y *might* kill you some unknown amount of time down the road, which would you choose?
I try to base my opinions on medical advancement off of fictional TV shows as well.
