    I believe Google was genuine in their attempts to scope this idea. What Google did get was a lesson in port authorities and waterside workers. The so called secrecy flies in the face of the two traditional groups. Port Authorities do not give up regulatory power, and the workers do not tolerate secrecy. If Google thought this would have been like a land based data center in Oregon or some such place they were sorely mistaken.

    A good hotelier conducts his/her business knowing that a percentage of the clients are there when they shouldn't be, and with who they shouldn't be.

    While one could debate ethics, it is reasonable that the client expects privacy as part of the service.

    Cameras at restaurants where clients are there when they shouldn't be, and with who they shouldn't be, blows the business out of the water.

    Just one headline would be damaging.

    I once saw a crowdsourced dance at a foodcourt that went viral. I saw a work collegue in it who was on holiday. All legit but there he was, at the right place at the other side of the world and at the right time.

    He'll get his boat back. More worryingly this was the third attempt at delivery. It broke down *twice* before and had to return to the manufacturer when attempts were made to deliver. A bigger entity really does not want him to have his boat! Boats breaking down is serious. You evade storms in a working boat.

    Under Suspicion (released 2000) has a couple scenes well before its time, around how online activity can haunt you later.

    I'll try not to give spoilers, but in one scene, they present Internet history and email logs.

    Given the year, and admittedly my niavity about what was a mainstream technology that was only 5-6 years old(note mainstream), the scene was a wake up call for me.

    It stood me in good stead when social media came along. Post like your are writing to the Editor and your real name will be published.

    The film stars Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. Two of my favorite actors to boot.

    Production of battlefield equipment is often not the bottleneck. Training a suitable number of troops is.

    Just as in the 1300's and 1400's the English Longbow was a devastating weapon. However, they just couldn't keep up the skilled men to operate the 6 ft, upto 200lb draw strength required.

    These helicopters are largely for moral.

    Corrupt politicians and senior police officers really need to be seen to be charged and swung in a noose.

    Certainly not promoted.

    While an offense can seem minor, I really feel its tip of iceberg. This case should see a career limited or terminated. Lying on a witness stand or planting evidence should be death.

    Politicians not being honest with money matters...should face death.

    The summary is not exagerating about some feeling on that forum.

    One guy who lists developed .NET games and Silverlight in his sig rants(bleep outs as they appear in forum):

    Interesting. I know first hand that detective instruction and manuals state that one should focus on those in an investigation that are overly compliant when searching for suspects.

    It is common sense anyway? When you cold call a neigborhood, those that have nothing to hide, invariably people are hostile to anything beyond "have you seen anyone suspicious out on the street."

    "Where were you on x date?" and things go rapidly downhill. Normal people get upset and start making a fuss.

    Ii gets worse. He finshes a question with "it feels like it's(Android) going to be more of a dog's breakfast.”

    He seems an interesting guy, obviously brilliant, but his broad view arrows miss their target by a long way.

    For example, in the same interview, he questions the free cost of Android. Its easy to assume the reasons, and this was shored up with the "Castle and moat" scenario put forward a few days back. It should have been obvious to him.

    Gosling also says he "hopes not to be pulled into the fray". Google needs to be careful with this back room boy.

    From the video, all I could think of was a severe case of gorilla arm..

    2 years ago I thought about leaving my job, In preparation I created a facebook page using my real name, with two artificial friends. I posted several "updates" with pictures: "Standing in a small group" at my old university refectory, a photograph at a church bake sale(I am agnostic, but those grey hairs make a proper cake), and a few from my mountain climbing days. If I motivate myself to still leave, I will spend a half hour and make another update.

    I refuse all friend requests. Even my spouses.

    My Manager returned from a 5 day management course recently. One 1/2 hour lecture was on Social Media.

    If I was even 90% happy with my Galaxy S I would upgrade to the S II. And there would be another sale for Samsung.
    I am not going to over dramatize to say I am grossly disappointed with the phone and I lose sleep, I dont. But I have lost confidence that buying a Samsung Galaxy Ssuccessor is prudent.

    The GPS problems, the update problems, the jitteriness just do not inspire confidence. I am cautious now. Thats spells bad news for me as a repeat customer for Samsung.. The one saving grace for the Galaxy S is the fantastic camera and video

    The day a competitor comes out that matches the camera resolution, video frame rate, and picture quality, is the day my Galaxy S goes on Ebay.

    But when she joins that Night School for cake decorating and there is a Muslim woman on some watch list(for being Muslim probably), all around her may fall under a flag

    As this Electrician leaving through a shared entrance way with a place frequented by a suspected terrorist can get you killed.

    Who knows what vague algorithms will place us on some watch list as a person of interest.

    Friggin' boards and share holders. I hate them. I am biased obviously. I am in the trenches, so they probably look at me with equal distain.

    This is the generic problem, boards and shareholders poke their governance noses in, not trusting senior operational to make the best decisions. Steve Jobs, and I suspect those around him, would go to their graves doing the best for Apples long term goals.

    Jobs himself will be well aware of consequences of his absence but I am guessing is managing the fact his return is best. I am not a Jobs fanboy, but shareholder boards fuck off and count pennies somewhere else.

    Probably this would be merely an avenue created by them, to ease the way for their true goals. Yes I am a cynic.

    The only this that separates the US from the other "great firewall" countries is the US is about 5-10 years behind. The US will catch up soon enough. The US Administration will have their way.

    Back when shooter titles were released at the rate of one per year(is it 365 per year now?), I used to get up about 3am to try to catch the news hot off the press. Sites like Voodoo extreme and bluesnews were my favorites. And they updated often in the early hours for breakfast reading.

    Billy "Wicked" Wilson(voodoo extreme) was often up, and sometimes I'd fire him an email to which he replied usually. I guesstimate I got up 30 times for DN4 updates.

    I followed intently the news when they changed from the Quake 2 engine to Unreal in 1998. They had been in development(supposedly) with Q2 for 2 years. The unreal announcement was the death knell for me. The disruption to the workflow could not support a valid business case?
