If this guy has started at a local govt entity or highly formalized private enterprise, I would suggest he squares himself up and forgets this sort of thing.
I have seen this directly. For example the corporate staff (including CEO) gets their wages divided into cost center charges.
Quick and dirty example: $3,000,000(corporate wages and expenses) / 500 cost centers = $6,000 per annum.
Alternatively if he wishes to keep digging, he will find himself pushed to the outer, or worse, managed out of his position.
To the very first email his response contains this sentence: "I am surprised you managed to attend work at all what with thinking about Missy out there cold, frightened and alone... possibly lying on the side of the road, her back legs squashed by a vehicle, calling out "Shannon, where are you?"
Yes, she was a bit silly to engage with an obvious asshole. I wonder if at some time in the future he has a daughter who is late and not home, and the ultimate irony, she had gone out with her friend, the daughter of Shannon.
"Why yes *my* daughter was home 4 hours ago...perhaps she is lying on the road somewhere...."
"so I am not surprised if they get this sort of thing."
What sort of thing is that?
This is democracy at work. Dont vote for them then. Once you start suppressing who can run for parliament you may as well start putting out the tenders for Gulag construction now.
I settled on an expensive propriety solution some months ago at work(I am the IT guy, Dishwasher, and Business...something) to do our orgs scan and ocr. Admittedly its end to end including the scanner as well. But $15K and does a good job.
I did searches online(a dozen hours) and they all funneled back to "FOSS less good, proprietry for best results)
I am afraid to look at this one, because I did make final decision with pressure from the General Manager.
I dunno what google uses actually, but their in-house solution(on googe code) would *not* produce good results. No1 in the FOSS tests, but like 6th(by miles) on proprietry comparisons.
"You have 20-year-old kids who get hired to do content review, and who get excited because they think they are going to see adult porn,".
That just couldnt happen in New Zealand, land of the first female prime minister, and first to give women the vote and pay parity.
I fear my post will sound like a troll, because of the nature of the content, but I'll type it out as I see it. I have been a funding advisor in govt so I have come in contact with aspects of it.
Some govt depts are heavily female and gay, the other 30% is christian. Ministry of health, Dept of Film ratings., etc. If the above situation was too occur, these depts would rip this company a new asshole. Think about the above sentence. Some bureaucrats couldnt tolerate it.
"digitally distributed version can download it now, though it won't be playable until the 27th."
My experience of this this of approach is unpleasant. While I talk about steam games, and while this is Battle.Net I am wary.
Pre downloading then activating on the day of release for left 4 dead 2 was terrible. It probaly has something to do with time zones as the "27th" will occur a half day before for me(being in new zealand).
On that day of release the sun rose, the shops opened and the copies were on the shelf. I was not able to activate for another 24 hours. Some NZ'ers could but not me.
I note battlenet say it is "activatable once it goes on sale in the US". 07/27/2010 10:00 AM PDT
NZ'ers and Australians, remember, copies will have been on the shelf for one day, if that affects your decision to download (BattleNet downloader 3 meg. Starcraft 2 client 8GB). Ports required are ports 3724, 6112, 6113, 6114, 4000 or 6881-6999. so if you are in a restricted environment you will get "Tracker Not Responding"
It is Friday 10:25pm for me, after had week at work, with a few beers under my belt.
Reading this story I have noticed my own user habits. My mouse cursor can move from one side to other of my 24" screen in about 1.5 inches mouse movement. I click links.Mouse wheel up and down.
I doubt I could accept using my hand to move over 24 " of screen. In fact I just emulated it, holding my hand to the screen, then moving 20 inches to a link that interested me.
"Anyone know what the immigration laws are for NZ"
Fairly tough. The reason is that NZ engages in a tit-for-tat rule system. So a question might be for a citizen in a foreign country, "How easy is it for an immigrant to come to my country and live".
"They aren't trying to filter the internet or anything are they?"
Sadly yes. Its not a strict as Australia but it is there. The ISP has to volunteer to join the scheme. Needless to say, I was on the phone to ask. And I actually enjoy getting sales calls from the big ISP's. "No, I will not join your service, as you have subscribed to the Internet Filter mandate".
Fortunately the small ISPs regularly score best in consumer surveys for service and performance..
About 10 years ago, in my country(outside the US), they found the greatest levels came from the insides of milk containers(the cardboard ones). For consumer perception reasons, the inside should be snow white, not brown. The whitening process was a bleach based one and the chemical contained dioxin. Apparently, a chlorine based oxidation whitening method is safe. But of course, more costly.
How are your cardboard products whitened? Don't assume in this day and age its the safe method.
This is a fair comment and it is how I base my spending decisions.
I guessimate I spend less on my high powered gaming rig than:-
- A golfer(club costs, Green Fees)
- Weekend car enthusiasts($1200 to upgarde their brakes, petrol for the Saturday hoon, then theres next weeks mod cost)
- Boating (Docking fees, an engine service is thousands)
- Woman at work comment they spend half their weekly pay on clothes (eg $300 - $600) *every week*.
The common factor in all the above would be the influence of dependant children on spending decisions. Factor that, and $100 for a video card may not make it past the purchase committee(the wife).
"Mod me flamebait or troll, but to hell with any country in the world that deems it proper to censor their people."
I am currently in correspondence with a person who posted a documentary on You Tube about Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and that video has been removed for TOS violation.
While Google, of course, is not the US government, they will be staying within bounds influenced by the Administration.
While it is easy to stand of a soap box and say "Fuck China" for its censorship, it is not so easy when a target is so close to home, aye?
I live outside of the US. Lets say, as in the summary, I was fined US$1 per infringed work then:
Currently, I pay NZ$1.50 per iTunes song.
At its worst exchange rate a couple years back it was NZ$2.12 per song(I didnt purchase many at that time).
If I had taken these songs instead, extradited to the US, fined, I would have to pay, lets see....US$340. Potentially less than the legitimate purchase price.
PS: I take no moral stand, I work, have limited time outside work hours, and take the shortest path for various things even if it means paying.
The only qualification required generally to join the police is a clean criminal record, and some very basic skills, mostly physical. After that the course length is stunningly short(weeks) for a job which has a responsibility as strong as high responsibility jobs. High school qualifications are minimal, and tertiary is a waste of time, untill you have done the hard yards and learnt the chain of evidence mantra.
Lets simplify it. When push comes to shove and they are chasing a theft suspect, the ability to run, react, tackle, and subdue are at the top of the list. The police officer could not be like Richard Stallman for example. The mere presence of some intellectual brilliance, probably removes any ability to "do the grunt work".
I used to work for a large Honda Dealership, assigning loan cars for people while theirs is serviced. While their car is bought around from parking I learned that some played Farmville. Others were in no mood for chat. I have seen grown(mainly women) scream like lunatics while they wait an extra 10 minutes till a car is sorted. One time when one didnt have cup holders, she threw the keys on the ground(complete with disabler alarm built in), and smashed them with her heel.
Flash is hawking an advantage in DRM etc, whereas HTML5 might allow greater ripping of content.
Unfortunately, this argument is falling away for Adobe as it can be noted porn sites push downloadable and unrestricted content as it turns out consumers want that.
The one area where streaming is an advantage is for those that wish to skip to certain points in the film and are not interested in the rest of the film.Flash and HTML5 allows easy seeking obviously.
I think the current patent situation is a kin to a patent land grab. It is little about valid patents, but the fact they are constrained to the US(Thru the USPTO).
It is cleary state sponsored.
Said it before, and I'll say it again: Patents will be the new oil resource, and wars will be fought over them in the future.
"He says it would help to both solve crimes and clear people who were wrongly convicted."
uh-huh. Yeah, sure.
Investigating Officer 1: Lets review this case investigation, with impending court charges against our suspect, just so we can, you know, get him off, if we, you know, fucked up.
Investigating Officer 2: So we expose our ineptness, and corruption, and blow our case stats all at the same time?
Investigating Officer 1: Meh, Its 5pm anyhoo. Couple jars down at the local?
And not only that, but when resampling the original videos to webM, they take the opportunity to up the quality and rez options from the original. And there is a big diff in viewing experience between 360p and 480p. But a few older ones are made to 720p, although thats not common as few non commercial HD cameras existing a few years ago.
For me, my desktop at home is as much about the situation than its horsepower (at a good price).
I struggle with a work/life balance. At least having a desktop means I cant access work from a laptop or handheld while at my girlfriends birthday, which I would sneak out to do(like an alcoholic sneaks out for a swig).
I sit down at my machine and play some Left 4 Dead 2, or surf the net. I can define it as recreation.
And you best close those blinds. (Its a newspiece about a guy who didnt close his blinds).Similar was in the newspapers here, being naked in front of the neigbors is an offence, even if you are inside your own home.
Interesting intepretation, as "siren song" suggests a quite lull towards the "idiot Box". Whereas, when I read "siren call" I envisaged a clambering to arms(in front of the idiot box). I lived in a rural area and was a volunteer firefighter. So the station siren meant the later for those on call..

Best not watch this you tube video then.
