    I'm sorry, have you not all been reading the on-line mags and such? Your local newspaper? There is no way to make money on the internet giving away things for free.

    hmmm.... how much are you paying to read "on-line mags and such?" Are you paying to read Slashdot? Last I heard Roblimo and Taco were getting by giving this "stuff" away...

    And IBM will always dominate the PC market...

    And Sun will always dominate the server market...

    And also, Microsoft will always dominate the desktop.

    When it's all over, it'll probably be obvious in hindsight... this is why Bill is so paranoid.

    I'm not an expert on BearShare but the link I listed (http://www.oit.duke.edu/ats/support/spyware/bears hare.html ) specifically talks about ad toolbars that track every web site you visit, New.net (filtering all of your DNS requests thru their servers) and a couple of pop up add trackers.

    Has he removed this obvious spyware in favor of a less intrusive money making model?

    Aside from the 'fun factor', the best way to learn about something is to try to make it exceed it's specs... honest ma, I'm learning! ;)

    Tools?? You want to use tools?

    Back in The Day we didn't use no stinking tools! We just sat around and watched the lights on the hub... if it blinked too much, someone was hitting your box! That's all ya need! ;) That and watch the hard drive light!

    Seriously, the best "tool" is an admin who keeps up to date on a broad range of issues. To harden a box, never depend on a tool, unless Slashdot or Security Focus.

    It's not like it used to be. Check out Knoppix (from www.knoppix.org). It's a bootable distro that you can install. It will support almost anything you want (everything on my laptop works!)

    How about a squid style proxy built in? The local browser would hit this network install for all it's preferences, caching, etc.

    Granted, for geek power users, this would not be widely used, but at my house, I could put the wife and kids and on thinner machines and just keep the one "server" box beefed up (more ram, etc), it would give me one place to update the browser, etc

    (I know that I could do a lot of this using an X-Server but until Reader Rabbit runs there along with 50 other kids games, I can't migrate them)

    A networked "browser server" with an ultra-thin client side "rendering browser" would certainly be an attention getting killer new feature.

    Wouldn't this lessen the bandwidth requirements for an ISP? By caching files locally, your local ISP could host more users with less bandwidth.

    Sounds like it could save an ISP a ~lot~ of money.

    Dang... I know most people don't read the article, but you didn't even read the post! ;)

    'After Comcast finally owned up to the massive amounts of spam coming from their network, they decided to identify spammers and zombie relays on their network and block port 25 traffic from those IP addresses.

    The problem is, none of that is in the best commerical interests of comcast, so they won't do it.

    Sure it is... by charging extra $$, they make more $$. How many people will ignore that extra $5 a month on their ISP bill?

    I do like the redirection to an informational web page idea though... let them click on past it but at least they've had a chance... and that could pass for the notification as well.

    I understand that these machines have been hijacked and the owners aren't at fault (unless you count negligence)... but all that being said...

    1) Contact them and tell them what you've learned. Give them 30 days to get the machines patched or cleaned.

    2) Terminate their service OR allow their service to continue but charge them an extra amount of $$ per month to cover the "blocking service".

    Don't just block the port and let the owners continue in ignorance. You've identified them. Now do something with that information that effects long term change!
