Specifically both finland and switzerland can get you a 100K+speeding fine if you are rich. The poor pay less, much less. If a fine is meant to be a deterrent, and it is really, then the super wealthy can break the law with impunity with no real consequence here in the US. Of course it is not going to happen. As the story says, this billionaire is a friend of the left, so the cal gov will bend over to let him have his way. Much like in texas where right leaning billionaires get their way. As one of my friends says often, soon Mexico will be as corrupt as the US.

  2. The study is just WRONG. Austin always had rideshares so the redux in car purchases was due to something else. Just because it wasn't uber/lyft does not mean we did not have them. We had rideshares willing to conform to the background checks. Of course uber did what uber does, got the state to override our law by buying the right people off with some hookers and blow.

Fine him 1 billion dollars and see if he wants to keep it restricted. Still no, fine him another billion for each and every week he fails to comply with the law. I forget which country, but one in europe adjusts fines based on worth. Super rich are not bothered by laws unless you make it hurt like it does for the rest of us. Isn't that really the point of a fine anyway?

Except the way the trolls work is they begin by picking off little guys for a couple mil, which is way less than the cost of the court fight. After the troll has some bucks from extorting some small frys, they move to medium frys, who still roll because the cost of fighting is still more than settling. Good biz dictates settle. Finally the troll may attempt to take on a big fry where the payout to the troll makes it worth the risk. I was obliquely involved in a case where the company decided to fight and they did win. Their lawyers advised settling and guess what, it cost them more to win than to lose. I don't see a solution actually. If you make it hard to allow trolls to do this, then true inventors will be harmed. On the other hand, the current system invites trolling.

Your uncle is forgetting most of the "good" spots to build a dam are taken. A good dam needs elevation change, a large well ginormous really area you can flood and the owners of that land are now sol. In central texas there is a chain of several dams for the colorado. They are building a very small dam below austin, but when I was talking to an LCRA employee, they were lamenting it is basically flat from here to houston, so not much capacity from the new dam. Another problem is over 100 people died building the hoover, which is another problem with dams.

  7. Agreed. Long gone are the days of small non-dependent programs. I tend to stay old school. My rewrite of the very ancient rand text editor is a 165 KB image and has dependencies on libc. No java, no python, no ... Does not have a builtin email client, and definitely cannot be used as an O/S. I think the few that have downloaded it like the bare bones approach of yesteryear.

I'm not sure what they did to the tuner chip, but if you have an old TV, a newer one may have better reception with the same rabbit ears.

I don't think it was safety, it was cost in this case. The numbers work out to 8 bucks/watt for this plant. It is currently estimated to cost 16 billion dollars and produces 2GW for the pair of plants. Solar and wind run less than that for construction and have no fuel cost and you don't need armed security to make sure no one gets out with the door with fuel. You could easily back the wind/solar with some nat gas peakers and still come out cheaper.

Then I'd go to these companies websites via the very convenient links google returned. I'd look over the products and select the one I wanted and either buy it online or go to brick and mortar. Back then companies spent money providing info on their web sites. As others have said, I completely ignore web ads, and pretty effectively block the obnoxious ones on a computer. I find on mobile, this is somewhat more difficult, so I rarely use mobile for browsing. So for me, P&G and many others are just throwing money away by paying for ads on the web. My 2 cents. Of course if the jig is up, facebook, twatter, and many other social media companies will be toast. I have my fingers crossed.

  13. You are assuming anyone can get one, which is very much not the case. I've a neighbor whose son did not make it, and I remember in school there was a guy who had been around forever. I asked my adviser about him and he said the prof's had given the guy hints but he did not seem to get he was never going to get a PhD. Just like I was never going to be in the NFL, most are not going to be able to get a PhD. As to cost, back then a PhD was only time. If you were good, you had an RA that paid the tuition and a stipend.I paid zip for my masters, actually I got paid to get it.

  14. When I was a kid we went to one of the churches to go to. The amount of money spent on the pipe organ upgrade could have paid to house the homeless in town. The electric bill to cool the place and gas bill to heat it would have paid for the food banks. The building expansion funds, the new bibles, the staff, ... Yep about 10% went to real charity. I saw the budget. The real purpose of most upscale churches is to make sure the kids date the right kind of people. It is a tax deductible social club.

I'm fostering one now that when he rolls over to get belly rubs he will sometimes show teeth in a very agressive manner. First time was like whoa, stop petting and move hand away. After a few times I realized it is just what he does. He is happy as can be and intends no malice. Well, maybe keep rubbing.
