i have a deaf friend who just had this service set up at his house using his cable modem connection. in fact, he was on a dial-up previously, but had the cable modem installed just for this.
it's very nice. they are using a modified dlink videophone unit and the quality is superb. he usually uses it later in the evening when the wan traffic has died down some and his framerates are consistently very high. very usable for asl.
not to mention, it is very cool that now i can call him on my regular pots phone and he can "talk" to me through the operator.
all in all, a very cool use of technology to improve someone's life.
one thing i miss that we had with pathfinder is a camera on the landing pad to take pictures of the rover while it moves around.
this cam might also be convienient for inspecting the rover for wear or damage.
granted, spirit will probably move out of range of the landing pad shortly, but it would be nice to have an external cam to get a shot of the rover first. for the rover team at jpl, it would be like a photo of their kid. i can see them carrying it around in their wallets, showing it off to friends and family.:-)
come to think of it, why make tolkien's name redirect to some vapid celeb fan site? i don't think this is going to draw your core audience of empty-headed fluff-worshippers.
maybe try something like www.parishilton.com next time (which you can see here is also taken, but not by paris hilton).
i have called sony several times regarding various plastic bits and pieces that have broken on several sonys i have had.
some parts broke due to wear and tear, others to damage done when i upgraded a hard drive and broke some plastic tabs off small parts as i was trying to take it apart.
by talking nicely to the tech on the phone, i talked them into faxing me an exploded view for reference, then ordered the parts needed, which, surprisingly, they sell to end users.
granted, the parts were a rip-off (like $40 for a small plastic door), but they were less than buying a whole sub-assembly.
this parent comment and some of the child comments bring up two sides of an interesting argument, namely:
what does a software company who has lost your trust in the past have to do to regain it?
for example, i am curious to see how well the intuit tax software does this season due to last year's debacle. what would they have to do to get you to switch back?
in this case, how far would real have to go to make people interested again?
for the tif version of this first color photo, head here. warning: 40mb!
i was watching CNN or Headline News and the NASA person they were interviewing said the compression ratio for this picture was 24:1, which is done by the rover before transmission. apparently, the ratio is adjustable and they are gearing up to take even better shots with less compression soon.

it seems the author has submitted this project to sourceforge and is waiting to be set up.

...to the celeb site.
i imagine many of the people who need the watch also have a mobile phone or pda (or combo of both).
what about a small app written for the task and installed on these? cheaper or faster?
well, at least its easily modifiable for other planets, where as the analog watch is not.

let's see how well he does on battlebots!
i'm guessing he would be in the heavyweight class.
from the article: "Using the X505 in a public place such as a coffeehouse or on public transportation, you'll notice a lot of glances."
:-)
and then they will beat the crap out of you and take it. not too hard to run away with a machine this small.
the program "provides an error message regarding the (il)legality of currency reproduction and an "information" button that takes you to the web."
:-)
i wonder if the feds have the "Internet Protocol Address Verifier" built in as well.

i have several locations with the symantec 200 routers (pdf link) with dual wan ports.
i would love to replace them with an ipcop type of open source / flashdisk / bootable cd / etc firewall that supports dual wan ports.
would be nice with a dmz as well, so that would be 4 nics total. 2 wan with failover, dmz, and lan.
...these types of deals don't look so expensive.
:-)
hey, it's slower, but the coverage area makes up for that.
i tried it out on my last trip, works well. doesn't work so well from a moving car, though. (no, i wasn't driving
the craft managed to transmit one final image before the comm links went out.
not sure how much sun exposure you have avaliable, but a laptop plugged into one of these has to last a fair while.
:-)
might even come in handy in new york next time the power goes out.
...from some other scammers demanding $699.
the pitch was pretty much the same.
"Today, everyone with an in-box has seen the pitch: A West African lawyer, banker or dignitary wants to get a huge stash of money out of the country. If the victim helps, he'll be cut in."
one of the sales pitches for the powerpack version is:
"9. Compatibility: run Windows and Mandrake Linux on the same computer."
and a picture of vmware running is shown. i would buy it in a minute if it came with a copy of vmware.
but, *sigh*, it doesn't.
how can they plug this as a benefit if it can't do it, or in this case, for only a limited time?
we should all take a deep breath, sit back, and have a sco juice
