you cannot test every bolt, once a bolt is tested it is useless because they are tested to failure. you can only test a sample which ishow a majority of testing is done on mass produced products.
epoxy is not a bad design, it is a repair for bad managment/construction.
yes engineers do build in a safety factor, the amount depends on the type of construction and use but i belive it is atleast 2x. you are right about it not being the engineers fault, in my experiance it is the fault of the contractors/workers, i wrk for a PE and we have several jobs that things are always being done wrong, common sence (yes i know that doesn't really exist anymore) things like plumbers cutting off studs in a bearing wall to run their pipes.
ignoring the fact that contractors want to make money, communication is the problem, all the workers do not speak english and 1 person translates the plans verbaly for the entire job, but then i guess that does come from the contractos trying to make money.
and you know where all these jobs are that we have so much trouble with are?eastern mass, around boston. anywhere else and there is almost no problem.
all those comments and not 1 mention of the real fix? you need to install a hotfix from Microsoft, there are copies of it floating around the net because ms refuses to make it publicly available, but if you call them and they determin that your problems will be fixed by the patch they will give it to you. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=896256 has the info but no download link.
if you leave/add the.jpg on there it usualy worked fine, atleast in my experiance. you also had the extension MacLink that would read the dos extensions and add in the file type flags automagicly,
LJ isnt forcing the ads on anyone, you enable them to gain access to some of the previously for pay features. you see them on your journal if you wish too, others will also see the ads on your journal unless they are a subscriber.
the address book thing is the major item i want, i have done address book w/ LDAP and thunderbird can use that as a source, but it cannot update it, and i havent gotten around to getting it setup in the webmail yet but i'm fairly sure it's possible but don't know if it can be updated from there either. what i think needs to happen is an open standard (similar to ical maybe) that everyone implements, that would solve many problems.
what do you concider a large folder? i have 1 that contains around 11k msgs and it opens up almost instantly. imap is a different story, but mostly because the server itself is grossly underpowered.
there is also an extension called "Nightly Tester Tools" that allows you to do this without having to edit the xpi. the only extension that doesnt work for me is Mnenhy for thunderbird
there is also Dropline Gnome
smtp can be run over ssl, and there is imaps, i think pop3 can be run over ssl also.
