I have an old 1/2 gig iPod that I would love to use as portable file storage, but Jobs doesn't even let me do that.

And which iPod would that be that is 1/2gig and does not support USB mass storage? Or are you just trolling?

Indeed, a 120GB Zune can be had for $234 where a 120GB iPod Classic can be had for $249. I'm sure the $15 price difference is the difference between paying your rent on time or not.

Yes, but the GP (quoting the article) specifically mentions iPods, and my point is if you're going to take up the space for a lossless file on the iPod you may as well encode in a lossless format that it can play back.

Besides, the iPod can already play lossless audio. I encode everything in Apple Lossless already. Space is cheap, there's no reason not to.

FWIW the DSi browser (while still not supporting flash) is much better/faster than the DS browser. The keyboard as well as the handwriting feels much more responsive and accurate compared to the DS, but that may be just in my head. An iPod Touch would only be about $50 more than the DSi and would probably be a better choice however.
