  1. Re:Why steal software? on P2P Networks Blamed For Software Losses Doubling · · Score: 1

my software delevelopment company just spend several tens of thousands of dollars on licensing and purchasing upgrade maintenance on all of our adobe products for several international development studios.

why? while expensive, the return on investment our company will see with our artists using adobe products is immense.

yes photoshop is ~$600 dollars, but for a cutting edge design shop that is nothing. adobe, through creation and aquisition, has created the most effective and efficient imaging tools to date. unfortunately, even the best open sourse solutions cannot compete with adobe's high end commercial software. the notion that no one will pay for this type of commercial software is insane.

  2. Will we even last that long? on Nuclear 'Asteroids' Due In A Few Hundred Years · · Score: -1, Offtopic

A few hundred years might be a little optimistic, considering the legacies of our past century.

Centuries of Imperialistic global policies. Environmental Destruction. Hyper Consumption. Lazyness. Ignorance. Fear. War. Nuclear attacks. Terrorism. Assinations and destruction of foreign governments. Slavery. Poverty. Human rights violations. This is the legacy which we as Americans leave for our grandchildren.

The United States is a nation hurtling towards a future of revolution and great upheaval.

The pictures and story she has on her site are quite simply amazing.

Being an American kid at the time of the incident, I was fairly well removed, both politically and geographically, from the disaster, but Elena's pictures serve as a reminder of just how terrible and far reaching the effects of the meltdown were. From the initial coverup to the resulting FUD pumped out by the Russian government during the aftermath, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that this event displaced tens of thousands of people, and many more are still dealing with the legacy or horrors the fallout has inflicted.

Kudos to Elena and the editors for a great human interest story.

  5. Finally, a movie to do the books justice! on Appleseed World Preview Minireview · · Score: 1

This movie looks amazing! Personally I can't wait to see it.

As a 13 year old American kid who read mostly Marvel, DC and Dark Horse, Appleseed struck a chord with me in a way no other manga series had before or since. With a combination of Masamune's amazing art, a complex story, and intriguing characters, this is a comic which was more than the sum of it's parts, and has always deserved a movie that lives up to it's promise, as the origional did not do it justice. Can't wait for the US premier!!

  6. Re:exclusivity on Rockstar Announces GTA San Andreas · · Score: 1

GTA: Vice City was released "exclusively for the console", although we see now that it is on PC.

    Actually, your wrong.

Grand Theft Auto 3 and GTA:VC were both origionally released exclusively for PS2 , not just console. Rockstar had an exclusivity deal with Sony, which makes perfect sense. By handing Rockstar a check to make sure those titles stayed Playstation only, Sony sold millions of additional PS2's. I believe that this agreement did allow for the porting to PC, as there is no first party developer to compete with there, and Rockstar has always developed for the PC independly of console commitments.

However, after the sales curve had peaked, Rockstar then offered exlusivity rights for the forthcoming GTA title to Sony again, in exchange for being able to tkae GTA3 and Vice City to the Xbox. It made sense to Sony, and allowed Rockstar to sell a few million more copies.

  7. Rockstar Production Values on Rockstar Announces GTA San Andreas · · Score: 5, Informative

To those complaining that Rockstar lacks production polish, citing games that came out 3 years ago like 'Oni' (see Bungie for that one)Let's just have a little history lesson, shall we?

Manhunt - Excellent twist on the stealth genre, great game play, killer sounds. Hollywood stars rounding out the voice casts. "..the most important game in the last 5 years..." -The Chicago Tribune

Max Payne 2 - Love it or hate it, this game on Xbox/PC is gorgeous. The textures and level designs are top notch. Story is on par with most movies being churned out by any major hollywood studio. Artistic storyboards, full mo-capped character models, and again, excellent voice acting round out this game. Several PC GOTY and Action GOTY nods.

GTA:VC - Dozens of authentic tracks from the time perioud. Amazing radio stations and voice acting. Full hollywood cast. Beautiful cut scenes. Immersive, large locale. Game of the year almost everwhere, including an Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences award.

Midnight Club 2 - 9.1 out of 10 IGN. 91 out of 100 Gamerankings. Killer music, awesome graphics and killer gameplay including online component. Set a new standard for environment freedom in a racing game.

What makes Rockstar great is not just their awesome games, but their attention to production and detail which blur the lines between games and other traditional forms of entertainment, such as movies. I have a feeling GTA:San Andreas will be no different.

  9. the father of cyberpunk on William Gibson on his Tech Life and Latest Novel · · Score: 4, Insightful

Gibson is one of the all time great sci-fi storytellers.

To this day neuromancer remains one of the best sci-fi tales of the modern age. Reading it for the first time when I was 13, I didn't understand it all. In fact I didn't understand most of it until I had re-read it a few times. Perhaps this is why it was not a critical success immediately. Either way, they eventually came around, and within two years the book had won the big three.

The real reason I loved the book as a kid was because of Case! He was one of the guys who made me want to grow up to be a code cowboy (even if I didn't come close). Gibson gave the nerd a sexy and dangerous side that put the cyberpunk genre on the map, soon after every would be 'hacker' was longing for 'cyberspace' just like Case was:

A year [in Japan] and he still dreamed of cyberspace, hope fading nightly.... He'd see the matrix in his sleep, bright lattices of logic unfolding across that colorless void.... The Sprawl was a long strange way home over the Pacific now, and he was no console man, no cyberspace cowboy. Just another hustler, trying to make it through. But the dreams came on in the Japanese night like livewire voodoo, and he'd cry for it, cry in his sleep, and wake alone in the dark, curled in his capsule in some coffin hot el, his hands clawed into the bedslab, temperfoam bunched between his fingers, trying to reach the console that wasn't there.'

A master at the top of his game.

Even if Rockstar doesn't want to bother with the costs associated with porting and publishing, why don't they sell the code to someone else? It would make money among those of us who don't want to fork out several hundred dollars in the form of a new console, new controllers, memory cards, etc just to play GTA.

Time to get with the program champ! There are 3 other systems on which you can play the GTA series. Chances are if the computer your posting on was built within the last two or three years even it can run it.

And have you ever noticed how small you gamecube discs are? They hold roughly 1.5gb, the current GTA is upwards of 4gigs, you want a 3+ disc game? The production and logistics incvolved at this point get more expensive.

Nintendo employees have repeatedly been quoted in the media as to saying that their system was geared towards younger gamers and did not support violent games. They have singled out GTA before as a game they felt did not fit their image. Not the way you get someones business.

And you expect Rockstar to 'sell' the game code to their franchise to some third rate publisher and developer? Are you fucking mental?!

The problem is, Rockstar is just too fucking greedy. They take bribes out the ass from Sony to keep GTA PS2-only, while taking bribes from Microsoft to port the game over to Xbox. Way to go, Rockstar...you found a clause in your contract that lets you screw everybody. And take all their money.

At first you condemn them for not porting their games to the 'cube, then you call them 'too fucking greedy' for brining it to more than one console. You hypocrite! Exclusivity rights are a major part of every big franchise, but its obvious from your whole post you dont know much about the games industry.

So go ahead and play your imitator games, at least we will have one less idiot who will be blaming GTA when they are arrested while commiting a felony.
