  1. Re:ONE NOTE on OpenOffice.org 3.0 Wants to Compete with Outlook · · Score: 1

One Note is excellent. I used to create many txt files for quick notes and information that do not belong in full documents, but now I just use ONE NOTE. It is so easy to create a tab and put information there quickly. Furthermore, the tabs can be organized any way I like with two tiers of navigation. I can also embed pictures, sound, etc. One Note is a killer app, and more people will discover it. Companies can use it as a collaboration tool as well.

Actually, there is a setting to take the pain out of delete then purge procedures.

Internet Email Settings > General > Purge Options > Purge items when switching folders while online. With this setting active, the mail deletes itself just by doing simple things like checking your pop3. When you come back to you IMAP, the mail is gone. When I found this setting, I stuck with Outlook for IMAP and it works great.

  4. Everyone has a PC! on Will Next-Gen Consoles Kill Off PC Gaming? · · Score: 1

Not everyone has a console. Many adults think consoles are for kids, but would not mind buying a casual game for their "work" PC to play at lunch.

What about Real Time Strategy, Turn-based strategy, and First Person Shooters? RTS and TBS are best with a mouse and keyboard. I cannot play an FPS with that gamepad, and they will not likely allow keyboard and mouse use for shooters on the next gen systems. Keyboard and mouse gamers would ruin every online FPS game for those gamepad console players. They know that, and will only allow usb keyboards for text entry only.

  8. unfair evaluation on Linux Users Try FreeBSD 5, Windows · · Score: 1

The user is clearly looking for problems since using the OS is not exactly the way it was in Linux. All of the so called problems are easily fixed in Windows. Copy / Paste options are available in Logitech and Microsoft Mouse software so that you can have one hand access to that feature rather than using the default keyboard combinations.

Mozilla and OpenOffice.org are easily downloadable and install quickly. Sure IE and Outlook Express are not that best, so it is easy to download and install something else.

The difference is that Windows will require people to download third party software for special options. There are millions of programs, so it is easy to find any feature to add to the OS. Windows is proprietary sofware from Microsoft, so they will never bundle an OpenOffice.org or Mozilla.

The best third party software is called Drive Image by Powerquest. It allows you to do a perfect installation, and capture that on a CD ROM. It secures users from Hard Drive failure, Viruses and Trojans by allowing users to revert to that installation and configuration.

Miranda, Mozilla, and Trillian lite do IRC for FREE.

Exploring the third party software is important for any OS.

Homeworld 2 looks great and I am excited for the release. I like how they made the demo multiplayer capable so I can try it online. Everything seems better, and they have a new rock/paper/scissors design so that Homeworld 1 strategies are gone. This is a new game with new strategies, UI, and graphics. Relic fixed the original game with this release, and hopefully they will continue to balance it as online strategies are discovered.

I find it funny how some people criticize that there is "nothing new." They must be looking for something radically different like Apes in space. I am one of those people that really do not need that much innovation in new titles. I want my favorites remade with new features and new graphics.

  20. XP is near perfect with 3rd party apps! on A Linux User Goes Back · · Score: 2, Interesting

I used Linux for a couple years, and dropped it when Windows 2000 came out. Now that XP is out, I find it to be an excellent OS. Here are some of the apps that I use:

    1) Powerquest Drive Image. After a perfect installation of my system and applications, I take an image. I take images in steps so that I revert to one or another at any time. Fifteen minutes sure beats 6 hours of installation. Drive Image is a gem for any windows users. It preserves perfect installations from viruses, trojans, and other possible system problems.

    2) Virus protection. Any file should be scanned prior to use. I have EZAntivirus since it has a small footprint. I use it in manual scan mode only.

    3) Firewall. Nuff said.

    4) Regcleaners or reg tracking software. Windows poor design makes it challenging to keep the registry clean. Of course I can always use Drive Image to revert back. This gives me the means to try any software with zero risk.

Windows XP is a huge advancement over previous versions. With the addition of some thrid party apps, you can take control of it easily and avoid any catastrophe.

I am sure that other companies have good boards, but I would buy where you can get the most people posted assistance.

I have a handcoded html resume since I am a web designer. However, most of the headhunter type firms request Microsoft word format so that they can make edits and then send them to companies. HTML or PDF is fine if you are going to send resumes on your own, but .doc is necessary if you want to go through employment firms.

One other note. Many companies that I have seen advertise jobs also specify Word format. If you send them HTML or PDF, you do not look as good as if you actually complied with their request.

I am not a resume expert, but it seems to be that Word is very necessary if you want to move around the job market. If OpenOffice.org can fix the bullet compatibility, then it is a viable resume creation tool.

I find the compatibility to be great with the exception of bullets. A bulleted list in OpenOffice.org will not appear like one opened in Word. However, a bulleted list in Word will appear as a bulleted list in OpenOffice.org. Aside from bullets, OpenOffice.org performs great with tables, spreadsheets, presentations, and documents. I have not tested any documents that contain macros or advanced formulas, since I rarely use those features. OpenOffice.org is great for users with basic needs.

Since my resume contains bullets, I have not been able to uninstall Word. OpenOffice.org is my default application for all Office filetypes.

From the start of the movie, I could not wait for it to be over. I felt as though I was sitting through another movie that I have seen before. It is a standard formula thriller that did not suprise me or offer any excitement. I found the action sequences to be poor as well with too much blurry camera motion. It is worth a reduced price or later rental, but I cannot recommend this movie to anyone.
