#1 on a Windows PC: Run combofix and Norton Power Eraser to check for rootkits. Maybe run malwarebytes as well.
#2: Create a new Admin user account with password protection
#3 Create a new Standard User account, and move his data from his old account's Favorites, My docs, Pics, Music, and Videos, etc. Data folders only. He will get fresh temp folders and fresh setting folders for software.
#4 Delete old user account
#5 If he is able to run Firefox with no script, I would highly recommend that move. If he is not able to manage noscript permissions, then just firefox.
What they did has the entire internet talking about it, so it is brilliant. Their current clientele is very small compared to what they need, so it was likely worth the risk of losing some people. Gog.com has extremely high Professionalism since that is what marketing is all about. Using a radical approach to attract people is fine, and they said people would be able to access their games again on Thursday.
I have no problem with what they did, because I do not trust any company. I am at the age where I just do not care or get worked up about what they do. I bought 1 game from them, downloaded it and backed it up so if they ever went out of business I would be in great shape.
The pictures of food in menus and on boxes always look better than the actual product. Disclaimers are now placed on everything stating that the product may differ in some way...etc. We live in a deceitful marketing society where nothing is like it seems.
Well, I am loving SC2. I have always believed that innovation is way overrated. Some people just need any update to their favorite games. When a company innovates and creates a new experience, then everyone complains that they changed the game. Game companies cannot win, and it is a daunting task to try to satisfy everyone.
I think that the game should have LAN play, but I am not someone who uses that feature right now in my life. My main source of entertainment is battle.net. Let me say that the new battle.net is amazing. I can get into any type of game in about 1 minute with millions of people online. Furthermore, no chat rooms = no spammers. I am not being bombarded my immature garbage. I understand why Blizzard was trying to get real names into the picture. They are trying to make the gaming community more mature for everyone to enjoy.
I have been using iTunes since it does the best job of organizing music. I wish it had a smaller footprint, but the interface and features are the best. Also, to have the same features in winamp, you have to pay $20 for their plus version when WMP and iTunes are free. In Ubuntu Linux, I use the default player: rhythmbox.
Just because they are gaining market-share, they can lose it just as fast. When a new restaurant opens up, everyone goes to try it out. What can happen is that people realize that Apple is no different than every other technology company. Their stuff breaks, other products are incompatible, and getting stuff fixed can be expensive. People will realize after a while, that they cannot do everything they want to do and go back to what they had before. Trends are just trends.
Maybe Apple has higher quality and better engineering, but it will be obsolete in 6 months anyways. You can buy two Laptops in an 18 month period for the price of 1 Apple. I guess all that extra quality is fine if you want to keep the same machine for a long time, but computing is planned obsolescence.
I dual boot Vista 64 ultra and Ubuntu on my desktop, and I do not have a problem with either OS. The secret to running Windows flawlessly is using an imaging program like True Image. Virus, Hard Drive failure, and a screwed up program installation can all be fixed in 15 minutes with an image restore. I have never had a virus anyways, because they are difficult to get and the fear is heightened by antivirus companies. To avoid viruses, just simply use Firefox and NoScript and you can pick and choose what scripts are executed.
I really think it is a matter of time until a huge chunk of MAC switchers come back to Windows. They were likely sold on all those promises and a hate for Microsoft's OS problems. They will eventually have some problem with MAC like incompatibility or hardware failure that will make them realize that they did not arrive in computer heaven with their expensive MAC purchase.
On another note, I think Ubuntu is really great and does not require proprietary hardware like the MAC. It deserves to grow and become a legitimate competitor. If Steam and Steam games comes to Linux, that would immediately switch many people to full time Linux users.
Or you could wait 45 seconds and balance your time instead. Take out the trash, go to the bathroom, iron a shirt, etc. There are many things to do while you wait 45 seconds.
At least, that is how the average consumer feels. It is the exact same thing to them as buying a TV. They feel they should be able to use it without the need to call for tech support. Therefore, they feel that tech support should be free. All other appliances require people to maybe read the manual if they get stuck, but never actually call someone. Why are computers different? The existing Vista consumers are going to ask these Gurus questions, because it is their right to receive free support for their problematic computers.
Pink Floyd wanted to innovate with their music. Radiohead wants to do the same thing, but they have the technology age to innovate an entire industry beyond the music. I just started listening to them, and they are great! As a Pink Floyd fan, it is easy to see the appeal. All of Radioheads albums are VERY different, but they share that common sound...Just like Pink Floyd. Put The Wall against Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here, Animals, Final Cut...etc. Each album was very different and innovative.
I play Guild Wars now, and have no problems. Convenient gaming, friendly servers, and lots of content with no monthly fee. You believe what you want, but I will likely not pay again for an MMO unless basic features are met like being able to change servers if UNHAPPY with the service. I am not too upset about name changing for Guild Wars because the characters only go to 20. However, name changing in WOW is different since your characters go to level 70. People do not want to start over, grind, or do tedious actions in order to have fun.
Blizzard has people paying for customer service. I did not like the server I was on with my son, so we were required to pay $25 per character to move. We had three characters to move, so that would have been $75. Each of my accounts has spent over $300 up to that point, and we were committed to staying with the game. We have been off of WOW for about a year now, and that would have been $360 of revenue for the past year that they could have received from me. However, I refused to pay for what I consider to be customer support. It is their game design that puts people on servers without knowing how good the connection will be or what the people will be like. Name changing should also be free as well. They find ways to charge people for what should be considered customer service. The game is a service and people do not have to buy it.
I thought McCain was disliked by the most conservatives for his liberal views. I think he could have the same challenges that Obama faces. I think it will be a very close election with two candidates having strengths and weaknesses.
It is called imaging... like Acronis True Image for example. Use partitions or store data on the server, then restore boot/application partitions and drives that get infected.
There is no reason to use a text based email client since all graphical ones are fine with Dial-up. Email is just text, even the ones that contain html. Thunderbird and Outlook allow you to not display graphics by default. Surfing the web is fine on dial-up too. While broadband is faster, and web designers are loading sites with junk, a 100k home page would still load in reasonable time. Furthermore, to speed up web surfing, install Mozilla prefbar so they can turn off images and flash with radio boxes, and turn them back on as desired.
Actually, there are more "starving artists" than surviving artists. Therefore, it is safe to assume that it is the general public that makes the surviving artists popular and adds the value to the music...using music as an example. There are millions of artists, that get no publicity like American Idol, no record contracts, no DJ payoffs, and other avenues to open up popularity that then creates the value of their music. With that logic, all music has no value, and it is the people that add the value.
Unfortunately, people do not care if they get any value from a killing a 20 with their 70. They do it for their enjoyment. It is a grief tactic, and the level 20 can do nothing. I personally do not plan to buy any MMORPG game that does not have balanced PVP. Between the bunny hopping, gear differences, and level differences, I think that WOW is a terrible PVP game. People are much better off playing shooters, which is what I choose to do now that I know better. I also think Guild Wars PVP is much superior to WOW, and Guild Wars 2 should be an incredible advancement in the genre.
Guild Wars does it right. I think Blizzard should keep real world PVP, but implement it differently. I think as soon as someone initiates PVP, an new toolbar should appear, and everyone should be the top level with top gear so it it balanced. There should not be level 70s killing level 20s and other grief tactics. In other words, PVP XP and PVE XP should be completely different.
I have automatic updates turned off on every piece of software. Why should I trust any software company? Most programs now have an update software button in the Help area, so it is not hard to hit that once in a while. I gave up caring if I have the newest software the second it is released.
All the games are on Windows. I have used Linux in the past, but have no reason to install it today since Windows does everything. I have my favorite games and Adobe apps. Office suite, I dont really care and would be fine with Openoffice.org. I think games are keeping the newegg builders on Windows.
Corporate America needs Microsoft Office, so that is why they do not switch. Outlook is the key to success for the office suite...not the word processor.
Microsoft's Operating systems are evaluated based on compatibility. They are compatible with millions of software and hardware combinations unlike a MAC. Furthermore, Vista gets undeserved flak for the same reason. If a Vista customer only uses hardware and software "MADE FOR VISTA," then they will have ZERO problems. I have been using Vista for a year and have no issues. I am not a Microsoft fanboy, but the level of hatred towards MS is just not for the right reasons. It is a free country, so go market your favorite OS to become #1.
There is a used CD market, and all digital distribution can kill it if they stop making CDs. Then they can eliminate music sales that give them nothing. They need to reward people for buying music. I say they reward all mp3 album purchases with a code to get a t-shirt or other band related stuff.
I definitely will not buy subscription music, and have no desire to do so in the future. I am in favor of buying CDs so that I can have the whole album and keep the music. The problem with the subscription model is that they can raise the price to anything they want once it gets popular. It is a trap, and I hope people are smart enough to avoid them. Buying music is like equity to me, where renting music is like having no rights.
The perfect model for me would be to have a music license provider that keeps all purchases on my account and gives me unlimited downloading of my music. Most people will only re-download in emergency situations like losing a hard drive, so it will not be a continual bandwidth issue for the companies. Furthermore, they can restrict 1 IP address per month so that people cannot hand out their login information for others to download. There has to be a trust that the company will be around in the future, and with new music constantly coming out, I think people will really like unlimited access downloads with their licenses. This protects my music from fire and theft.

What happens to winamp? Perhaps someone can take it over.
