Hard to imagine more than one percent of Slashdot readers giving a lick about this. Although ESPN is about the only thing on cable or satellite that you can't get elsewhere.
Reading through these comments, it amazes me how many of them are along the line of "He deserved it" or "He tried to provoke it". If that had been President Bush or Vice-President Cheney that this incident occurred to, I would have seen the word "Nazi" in many forms at least 200 times by now in these comments. This underlines the point that the vast majority of US campuses support free speech, as long as it is left speech.
Dell installing Linux on anything is a very influential move. I'm not an Ubuntu fan, (preferring Mandriva and PCLinuxOS), but the fact that Dell is willing to put an alternative out there will do nothing but help Linux infiltrate the mainstream of the PC computing world. I personally have steered people away from Dell. I may have to rethink that.
This is, by itself, arrogant and condescending enough to warrant thinking Falwell was an asshole and the world is a better place for his passing.
At least Jerry Falwell didn't fund suicide bombers to go and blow up innocent people who disagreed with his beliefs. Dr. Falwell may have been a conservative with regards to politics, and he may have been expressive in his views, but I can guarantee that he didn't turn around and curse people and mock them and say that the world would have been better off without them just because he didn't agree with them.
It's funny you choose to point out one very small thing of Jerry Falwell's life to hit on. And no, he did NOT believe that their "sin" was their very existence. Did he believe that homosexuality was a sin? Yes. Did he believe that homosexuality was a worse sin than adultery or greed or gluttony or slander or libel or gossip or murder or stealing or any of a plethora of things that are against the Scriptures? NO!!! Jerry Falwell believed that if you were about to fall into a ditch and he didn't say anything to warn you, HE would be culpable of your injuries. But he didn't just stand aside and yell out to those he believed were falling into a ditch. He reached out and tried to help them. If Jerry Falwell "attacked" groups, then give some quotes and solid examples. But if he just reached out to those whom he thought were deceived and needed help, recognize that for what it is and don't vilify him with quotes as I am seeing like he's "sucking satan's cock". It kind of proves my point.
It's pretty amazing that a little woman in India can win the Nobel Peace Prize for working with the homeless and destitute, but a white American male is vilified while doing the same thing. There was absolutely no hate in anything Jerry Falwell had to say. He didn't agree with the homosexual lifestyle. but I am pretty sure that he cared for these individuals as lost sheep just as he did anyone who he felt were not walking according to Scripture. As I'm writing this, I just thought of a strip of Shortpacked I read the other day.http://www.shortpacked.com/d/20070502.html that talks about opinions. Just because you think it's right doesn't mean it is.
Why don't you do a little research into the life of someone you so summarily dismiss? What have YOU done for the homeless or addicted? Just because the liberal news media throws someone out there for derision and ridicule does not mean that they haven't done anything worthwhile.
I've never lost of any of my mail nor my settings in google/gmail. I don't rely on google docs but they have come in handy in a pinch. I think all of "nothing to see here" comments are exactly that. Maybe a $hill?
With luck, we will never see the fourth pricing option which lurks malevolently in the background: 4. Linux, with bonus enhanced-value mega-cool selected premium packages
Yes, but given that Sony couldn't even handle a simple maneuver as you suggested, one even the most socially inept geek could handle....it begs the following--if they cannot handle basic PR, why would I trust that they could handle the rest of their console which includes complex tasks such as hardware, software, and programmer/developer relationships?
Please go back and re-read your quote. Everyone knows social competency and geekness are polar opposites! Maybe Sony's problem is that it is too far advanced for the market. Or maybe that the geeks are running the store instead of doing what they do best.
I live in Savannah, GA(Gulfstream's home) and yes it does take a while to build one. The interiors are custom made and are pretty elaborate. They also have an order backlog of about 2-3 years. And the king of Spain probably has one or already has one on order.;)
;) I don't imagine the bit torrents are tearing up Bergman flicks. In the US anyway, anyone who knows who Ingmar Bergman is has the funds to purchase his films. His last US filmography credit is from 1996 according to IMBD, BTW.
I have this theory that Hollywood should be allowed (by whom, I have no idea) to put out about 10-20 movies a year. That way they'd ensure that only the best directors, actors, writers, etc would be working, and anyone who has any part in the making of a movie is going to a damn good job of it
So whatever field you work in should only allow 2% of its employees to earn income!?!?!?! After all, we only want the absolute best hamburger flippers, coffee makers, paper shufflers, etc, ad naseum, to wait on us? And who is to determine "crap"? Unless you are French, many thousands of brave soldiers have died so you can have the right to vote with your currency (or your torrent) what film is worthy.
UHHHHHHHH,,,,,, NO!!! I have TRIED to use Ubuntu on several systems and something always rises up to bite me in the rear. Mandriva remains the most stable and best hardware detecting Linux out there. I work with computers from PII 200 and up. If I have 256 MB, I don't hesitate. It's Mandriva.
Yea, Ubuntu's the obvious choice if you have very common hardware. Otherwise you can forget it. I work on a lot of older computers and install various versions of Linux on them to sell or sometimes give away. Mandriva is my first choice if I have enough RAM in the machine (256MB) because 99 times out of 100 everything will work without any tweaking needed. Ubuntu rarely gets everything right immediately. A newbie doesn't want to go edit xorg.conf files.
I don't see a lot of difference on a new install with fresh software, in fact Windows has the advantage because it usually installs and just plain works with no treaking
I have done dozens of Linux and Windows installs and have yet to have a Windows install pick up all the hardware. If I'm working on a new machine, no big deal because I have MANUFACTURER"S DRIVERS supplied. Most of my work is with used machines and 9 times out of 10 I do NOT have drivers disks. If you are lucky, the component is still supported and you can download a driver. If not, then you are in for a ride that makes Linux set up look like elementary arithmatic. Plus, even in the time it takes to do a simple install of the OS in Windows I can have the OS and all of my productivity software installed and ready to go.
The attitude that I've seen displayed by several posts that "it's OK, the store screwed me so I'll get them, etc" is growing more and more prevalent. One other big problem with it is that the small business gets caught in the middle. I've run a small ($800,000 annual sales) retail specialty store for 10 years. We strive to provide good customer service, and always honor our posted warranties and returns. Increasingly, we fight against the "easy" return policies of stores that take anything and everything back. In May and June, I will have fully HALF of the camcorder batteries I sell come back, bought and used by those with graduations and weddings. Customers who will insist they bought an item from your store when it clearly has a "Radio Shack" label on it. (No I am not Radio Shack) Others who say they just bought the item a week ago and the date code on the item indicates it is 3 years old, then blame you for selling "old stock". The problem? In most of these conversations I will hear the phrase, "Wal Mart would take it back!"
Unfortunately, the small business doesn't have the resources of the big box store to cover these kinds of losses. You end up giving in to avoid the threat of having to deal with negative reputation, but the sales volume doesn't make up for it. And you can forget fancy schemes of receipt tracking, etc. They are way too expensive for the small business. As you can see, we are caught in the middle.
Go to http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ You can set up your sources for software with just a few clicks and a copy and paste into a terminal and away you go! Then you just remove the CDs as repository sources and you are all set.(do that through the MCC)

Why shouldn't a charity earn its own money by leasing its property rather than going out begging? More charities need to earn their way.

Isn't that what Linspire is?
Why would they be in trouble? Microsoft does this on a regular basis and gets praised for it!@

Ingmar Bergman? What an example of modern Euro film! When is she coming out on utube?
Duhhh! ;) Point is that Ubuntu doesn't have the hardware recognition that Mandriva has.

Nice to see Steve Ballmer is posting as A.C. again.
