So you would argue that a system created by beings riddled with imperfection is without flaw? Interesting.

If you use gamespy for connecting to online games you should really try The all-seeing eye instead. It's a lot cleaner, faster and easier to use (IMHO).

I haven't used gamespy for a few years, but when I did it just had too much crap in it that I didn't want. All-seeing eye was a blessing.

The page says something about a free trial, but it's free all the time. The server scanner might get clogged sometimes though and you have to try again. When/If you register you won't have that problem.

  4. Iiyama on Annual Customer Support Rankings · · Score: 1

I had an Iiyama monitor the broke down and all I had to do was fill in a form on their web page. They sent me a new monitor within a few days with an address sticker and their customer number at the national postal service here in Sweden.

I unpacked the monitor, put the broken one in the box and the address sticker on it. Called postal services and they picked it up a few hours later and I never heard from Iiyama again.

The monitor might have been expensive, but that kind of service makes it all worth it.

I have read The Design and Implementation of the 4.4 BSD Operating System and it is a very good way to learn the inner workings of an OS. This is an older book than the one mentioned in the article and I'm sure the new book has some more up to date information. But I would expect it to be just as good as the one I mentioned.

The authors of the book helped in writing BSD and they give the impression of knowing what they are writing about.

I don't use gentoo daily, but it seems everytime i do and I want to upgrade to the latest stuff there's always some new release of firefox, thunderbird or some other application or library that takes a long time to compile. It's not just new versions of the applications but new releases of the packages 0.9.2-2 instead of 0.9.2-1 and so on.

I suppose i must have some weird setting or perhaps I'm just too sensitive about compile times.

And I meant that downloading lots of new stuff really wouldn't hit the mirrors that hard since it takes a lot more time to compile new packages than to download them. Well at least on my connection and computer. But then again, if my above mentioned experiences are not those of the common gentoo users I guess that's not really true.

I run gentoo myself btw, I just get tired of all the compiling sometimes.

I hope the people buying this tree realize that they have to keep an old computer working for a few thousand years and pass that computer to their children and so on and so forth. It would be a shame to not take advantage of its ability to calculate a thousands years into the future.

It would be really cool though if it could masquerade as something else when it's not christmas (holidays whatever). Both me and some of my friends are usually too lazy to take away decorations after christmas and you usually end with some smartass comments during summer.

Sorry if my post wasn't clear on this. I meant that you can choose distribution, so there's no need to complain about distributions that limit choice.

If the lack of KDE bugs you just choose another dist and be happy with it.

  14. Why argue? on UserLinux Continues Debate Over GUI · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why do people always have to argue that you should use this or that? The beauty of it all is that you can choose, if you do not like a distribution that ships with only Gnome then don't use it. If it's based on debian you might just as well install debian and KDE (if that's what you like) or grab a source-dpkg or a dpkg and install KDE on UserLinux afterwards. I realize that many see the need for a common environment with less choice. Mostly to make it easier to move from some other OS to GNU/Linux. But those who want KDE in UserLinux are probably competent enough to get it on their own or use another distribution, they probably won't have a problem choosing between Gnome and KDE. :) Arguing can be interesting and sometimes good, but this just seems like a pointless discussion to me.
