TFM has a purpose. What its all about is when someone comes to me and says, "Hey, Bear, how do I print a test page on an HP 4050?" or, "Bear, what would a guy have to do if he wanted the files in a directory without any of the other data?"
I dont have the time to answer every question for every person. It is not logical for a person to figure this stuff out on their own but TFM were provided for people to teach themselves.
Scripts are not the salvation of society. While I could make a script for many things (including OS setups), this would not make the person have any knowlage as to what they just did which would eventully cause problems.
While it is true that I don't RTFM for everything I do, I assure you that I don't engage in questioning or pretend to be an expert until i have.
it sounds more to me like having a secret email address. i mean, i have to communicate the secret code by other means, i could have just used a secret email address and only given that to those who i trust with the code. i mean if im user@domain.com then you need to put in the subject (the secret) 123456 or if im (the secret) user123456@domain.com, what is the difference?
The other part of this is the calculations. I don't see it mentioned here but there is the required time for your processor to calculate the formula. THis has been mentioned before and we all know that this will slow spam for a few weeks but slow email forever.
This plan ammounts to, lets all make long hard to randomly generate email addresses simoultaniously and then spam will stop. Riiiight, where was that at.... of there it is
i usully dont reply to ACs but i shall this time. the point wasn't that the bot could be pre-programmed with some stuff and not others. the point was that it has made a decition to go beyond its programmed peramitors.
i am aware that it takes the human years to put together relationships which decide that hot is bad, then more that stove is hot, then even more that stove is hot when it is on and cold otherwise, and evetully why the stove was hot when it was on. the problem is that there are no circuits (nor will there likly ever be) which can make such determinations, only software. and there is no computer which can hold the data of those past dections, and (the kicker) not a system that could calculate all the data which a human throws aways when walking through the kitchen (location of all objects, feel of colthing on body, air temp, humidity, and gas mixtures, hardness of floor, shound of grass blowing out the window) all data we can choose to access but gernerally throw out.
the point here is that there will not, in my lifetime, ever be a way to compute such things and therefore can only build specialized machines which can do one task (i.e. tend goal) and they must be pre-set with what gravity is and how to deal with it as that they cant learn it. if i knew how to do such things, i would be writing this from my yacht, not my studio apartment. but that is AI.
He's not talking abou the ability to make non-programmed decitions. You see, AI is not a really long complex program being run on a very powerfull processor (sorry vid game programmers, you use the term wrong), it's telling a machine to accomplish a large goal and having it go beyond an instruction set to make small moves in that direction. if we programmed a goal keeper in soccer and we told it to match the angle of the oncomming player, move twards an intercept point with the ball, consider liklyhood of passing and make mathmaticlly acurate guesses as to which player to cover, then we are jsut coding like we always have. If we tell the system to defend the goal and IT DECIDES to block a certian player, or IT DECIDES to capture the ball in midfield without any algorithims about leaving the goal box, then you have AI.
I am aware this was prob meant to be a joke. As I sit here looking at posters from the office of the national counterintelligence executive, I am reminded that this is a possibility and not a good idea.
The act of obtaining, delivering, communicating, or the receiving information about the national defense with an intent, or reason to believe, that the information may be used to the injury of the United States OR TO THE ADVANTAGE OF ANY FORGIEN NATION. (emphasis mine)
I know several people who do this. This is actully a good method not just for keeping your mails clean but knowing who NARCed your address. using xyzinc@mydomain.tdl would let me know to whom xyz inc sold my address. also, its disposable. At the same time, I will prob use Gmail and forward at least one address on my domain to it to play around with it. My point however still holds, the only real control you can have is purchacing a domain.
I think "a little while" is more true than people are considering. Is the concept of "forever e-mail" real? I thought it was. I move to hotmail for the last move ever, no more ISP changes, no more requiring a client. Then the pot sweetened, outlook express reading and locally storing emails off of the servers. Then it all went to hell, the folder sizes got cut ridiculously small, they started extorting money for real sizes, never increased maximum attachment size with the market calling for larger files, and then the selling of our addresses. A sad day indeed. My last e-mail address ever is now just a junk mail box, I still use it for required registrations and such but it fills from zero to capacity in 48 hours.
I resolved to purchase a domain and collect all mails to the domain (catch-all), leaning how bad that was, I now have only a few allowed. My main one get more spam every week and I know that one day I will have to leave it too, at least for another on the same domain.
Thinking that Google will be a permanent solution is a little short sighted, the only way you can assure a permanent address which you can control is to purchase a domain, and even then you may still have to move one day. (I'll gladly use my 1 GB though.)
The dimensions are always meant to be for home use. Dell trys to put a good spin by saying that it is for cutting edge technology but if you ever try to buy a bunch of them at once, the salesman will try to talk you out of it. In any case, here is the dell responce to Optiplex vs. Dimension.
Try to remember, when sony came out with the walkman eerone said that this is the stupidest idea ever. Who would buy a tape recoder that doesn't record? Turns out, everyone. Its not the ammount of features that matters, its the usefulness to the task at hand (and to some respect, the novelty).
After working a few seasons in a Paramount amusement park, I got to know a few fluent Klingon speakers. When the star trek experience opened in Vegas, they were offered very nice salaries walking around and taking pictures with kids; the same thing they did at the park. (Everyone at the star trek experience is required to speak Klingon and, if applicable, the language of the character they play). For anyone who says that it would never get you anywhere, here is a great example that it can.
I do know how HP markets their product. It is not a suggestion. Dell takes the same approach that Redhat/Fedora takes. Home lines are for cutting edge, may or may not work, state of the art. Biz are for tested, tried and true. Dell will guaranty the life of a model and parts for it as well as all the software on it, but only for the biz. Dell further sorts their systems to desktop and workstation for what is used by normal people and system that have raid, dual video cards, and other geeky things.
Hp has a different approach. they have personal and biz as well. the personal are pavilions and can be sorted into American made (fixable) and foreign made (disposable). check your first 2 chars of serial number if you are wondering what country it was made in. The biz lines are divided into low end, high end, and thin client. these are not sold in store and rarely sold one at a time. if you want them, you need to hook up with an HP salesman.
I am a certified Dell, HP, Compaq, Apple, IBM..blah, blah, blah... tech. To be fair I have not been working HP/Compaq directly since shortly after the merger and the way they operate may have changed but I would suspect that they are referring to Brios, Kayaks, ect.
Where does it say that they put on the Armani's and drove their new Lamborghinis in to tell them about the problem? It sounds to me like they presented the data as soon as they had proof of insecurity.
Im glad i read on and found your clarification. Childish actions of refusing to work will cause problems which you will be the one who has to fix. Don't explain your clearece level, this doesn't help. someone with full clearance should comply to stricter rules than the rest. if you have a camera, and they are disallowed, swich phones. The company should be providing you a phone if it expects you to have one to do your job. If you chose to cancel your phone, would the company suffer, if so, they should be paying for it. If they are making you switch, they should pay the cost of switching. personaly, i carry a phone 24x7, always charged, always on. Being without it would be irresopnsable.
Your work can't expect you to be on their beck and call when you are off but not be on someone else's while you are on. Think about that. If you heald 2 jobs with the same policy, you would always be in violation of the rules no matter what you did. Thats unreasonable. In any case, if you are in IT, you a familer with this process. Identify the problem, find the reason for the problem, suggest solutions for this problem, make your professional recomendation, explain the consiquences of each choice as clearly as possible, allow the company to choose, implement, document.
(If the choose no phones at the end, one of the consiquenses may be the company needing to replace you as that you calmly explain that you are not willing to accept a workplace without this resourse)

So, when you say media conglomerates, your not talking about msnbc?
you all scare me.
Thats what I always tell people. If you ever see me running, shoot the person behind me.

R2-D2 Danced better than I do.
If I remember correctly, that's what caused the US to give 'em the finger. Damn taxes.

I srewed up my own joke!

nevermind....it's not funny anymore.

So who ordered the other 98,998??
