I'll vouge for your parent, this is the way it went down. It was a strike of sorts, but it was the dock that locked the longshoremen out not the longshoremen refusing to work. At the end of the day, they were ordered back to work, funny as that they were forced to stop work. They were told to go back to the old way and it was kinda ignored that the old way was in violation of the rules. All this really ended up proving is that the longshoremen can use this anytime they want for anything they want. The dock should have been forced to comply one way or the other but the longshoremen felt that the point was made and resumed rule breaking at their own peril.

Most of that time i spent in the hollywood/burbank and in getting there from our industry headquarters. I now work in Pomona near the college but drive downtown frequently. ok, lets try this again. you take an oxygen tank, just some goold old 2O2, you open that sumabich up and stike a match, some flint, whatever, you touch a 9volt to some steal wool, you put it close to that escaping gas, the little fire starts. next, you remove this match, spark, or whatever. Does the fire go out? Come on, dont do a 'thought experiment', go try it. OK, you're back. Good now we know that the fire did not go out. So was it the match still burning? You douse the match in water 10 feet away yet the fire continues. This sounds to me like a flammable ("Easily ignited and capable of burning rapidly") material. Its funny to me that if you replaced all the Oxygens in this statement with another gas, say Hydrogen, and preformed the same experiment, you wouldn't have seen the complaints.

We, without the reset of the US, have the worlds 7th largest enconomy, we feed pretty much the entire world.

    About your negatives:
Everything expensive: really only in OC, LA, and Bay, remember that this is less than 10% of the state. The desert (only 1 hour from LA) and the central valley (an hour from the bay) are still pretty cheap. Up past sacramento, land is practilly free.

CA traffic: We also have the best freeway system in the nation, and we did it without turnpikes. THe bad commutes are into LA and into silicone valley. Other than that, its not that bad. (and i worked as a on-site computer tech in LA for 3 years.

Major metro areas: What do you define as a major metro area? If you answer a place that is really crowded.... umm OK.

No smoking in public areas: This is bad?

This is all very true. Personal relationships can cause stress on work relationships. Also, Work relationships can cause stress on personal relationships. I hired on my GF and found that she didn't like me at work. She didn't realize that there would be no kissing, she was not allowed to call me "honey" and, this is the big one, she couldn't deal with me chewing her ass out (like any other employee) when she messed up. She seemed to think that because we had a personal relationship, different rules applied to her than any other employee.

Futhermore, women can't leave it behind when you walk out the door. I worked for one of my best friends a long time ago. It came to the point that, in order to save the company face, he needed to fire me. He did and then we went out for a beer. With my GF,if I was dissatified with how she dealt with a customer, and I told her so, she "wasn't hungry" when it was time for our date later that night.

THe important thing to take away from this is that you can't, no matter how much you think that you can, ever work with those you love. If you are going to anyway, make sure you set forth the difference between work and home and never let anything cross that line, in either direction.

What you say is true. Even delivering power to the server lowers its security. A truly secure server is off, unplugged, disconnected and in a vault. I guess you could argue the defenses of vaults, but I digress. In this example I was speaking of putting servers which have no need for internet access on non-routable IP ranges. When routers don't pass info, you are preventing access in and out of the space. I felt that it goes without saying that firewalls should be set up correctly but there is no need for a firewall when we are not allowing any packets on any ports. If an internal machine is compromised, we would likely have a physical security problem as that the servers which I was referring to should be locked in a server room. In any case, my point was that it's ridiculous to say we should disconnect them all. I want to manage machines with a network and it is possible to do it with a reasonable amount of security. We all must chose the threshold of what we will call secure, I feel that this situation is clearly within that threshold.

If we are talking about teenagers, sex is really the right answer. Like it or not, in order to be attractive to women (or even men) you must be clean, sociable, and being in decent shape doesn't hurt. Most intelligent people would be with you on that this is a good course of action, the problem is how to be sociable.

I don't advocate D&D any more than I do cocaine. It's addictive and ends up introducing you to more people with no social skills. LUG's, Magic, theater, and comicon are all right there with it. The goal is to interact with people who are outside your social circle and comfort zone. I saw a few good suggestions for this: martial arts, camping (boy scouts), sports.

I am a geek, I am fat, everyone I know describes me as outgoing. The secret was realizing the falseness of "cool" and "popular".

Someone is popular because they are accepted by those who you perceive to be popular. It's in your perception. There is nothing which sets the cool apart from the un-cool other than that individual's self-perception. Once I was able to come to terms with the fact that no one is intrinsically better than me nor more worthy, I was able to break the mental block which kept me in the theater and out of the keggers. Once I quit ranking myself on a scale of what I thought others thought of me, I was able to become what I thought of myself.

Remember that being more intelligent does give you the advantage. You can learn the game, practice it, and become proficient while others are still coming to grips that there is a game at all.
