I mean c'mon like there isnt a shitload of Prior Art on this. Look at some of the old FTD sites in Archive or others that have been doing this since they hit the web.
Thanks, I just found this doing a search "Citizens of countries which do not recognise the Queen as head of state sometimes have honours conferred upon them, in which case the awards are "honorary" - the holders are entitled to place initials behind their name but not style themselves "Sir...". Examples of foreigners with honorary knighthoods are Bob Geldof and Rudolph Giuliani, while Arsene Wenger and Gerard Houllier have honorary OBE's. Recipients of honorary awards who later become subjects of Her Majesty may apply to convert their awards to substantive awards. There is no law preventing foreigners from holding a peerage, though only Commonwealth citizens can sit in the House of Lords. However, the Canadian prime minister was able to advise the Queen not to grant Conrad Black a titular honour while he remained a Canadian citizen. "
Heck even some current motherboards have dual BIOS in case of failure. Your right, they should have at least double, but really should have triple redundant systems.
I mean like beagle isnt using its flashram anymore, just go and jack some off it. While your at it TAG the Beagle with some PRO-US graffiti:) hell maybe its got nicer rims too
Seriously, can you imagine the first manned expiditon seeing the Beagle Jacked up, tagged , up on little martian cinderblocks, All that and we already got a head start on building martian cities
Both my great uncle and my Grandfather passed away some 10 years ago. To be honest my cousin isnt good enough to be a Master undertaking an apprentice.
BESIDES I kinda have a phobia of things that tick, no joke, while I lived at my grandparent my room was the "watch room" all 4 walls were covered in although beautiflly crafted shelves FULL of clocks in need of repair, and litterally THOUSANDS of watches in drawers and boxes needing fixed.
NOW imagine waling into the room, the very act of walking created enough vibration to set many in to motion ticking away, as a collector I am sure you are familiar with how sensitive to atmospheric conditions especially the clocks are, clocks striking at all hours of the night because the started working again , watches starting and stopping, PUT all this in a VERY quiet country setting, It took me almost a year to release the mainsprings on anything I could find, but 3 years later watches would still start and stop ticking ALL the time....ZUUUUGGG enough to drive a person half mad
Well I am a little sad, I moved in with my grandparents to help on the farm and take care of my 98 year old great grandmother when I was 15, my grandfather asked If I wanted to learn watchmaking, he said it would take about 4 years of apprenticship. I said no, as did my father taking my fathers route into computers (he started with IBM in 65)
The family still owns a rather upscale jewlers store, my cousin a few years older than myself learned watchmaking from my great uncle (my grandfathers brother)
He is one of a VERY few watchmakers in the U.S. he specalizes in repairs on historical timepices. he now makes upward of $200k a year.
I thought the same thing most everyone else did, in this day and age how could a watchmaker compete in a world of mass manufacturing, the sad part is "Old World" craftmanship is dying, and its progressive, the fewer people even capable of this sort of work are able to teach fewer students.
When I was young (about 7) in say 1976 or so my father bought a NEW digital watch , you know red LED that lit up when you presses a button, we were sitting at my grandfathers kitchen table, my grandfather was a watch maker, not some repairman he actually MADE watches from scratch at a rate of about 3 a year.
Anyhow my father being very proud of his $800 new invention showed it to my grandfather, who looked very carefully at my fathers watch, he sat back, sipped his coffe and said "How is that progress when now it takes 2 hands to tell time, one for the watch and another to press the button to make it show time ?" My father kinda sank into his seat his bubble being burst instantly, I dont think he ever wore it again.
Paid better than programming even in the DotCom days, unfortunatley its VERY hard on your back and knees. I thought about going back but I used to be able to swing to 80 lb toolboxes around like paper and carry a 275 pipe machine up and down stairs 5 times a day. I'd be suprised If I could even carry on box like I used to or get the damm pipe machine out of the truck.
On a side note, plumbing is a VERY hazordous occupation, between serious injury, there are some very serious toxilogical risks, plumb (from the latin LEAD, hence plumber) is everywhere Ive had lead poisoning 4 times and even copper posioning once, asbestos is another very serious issue when doing remodels or repair work, most all insulation pre 1970 was asbestos. I was a 5th generation plumber and pipefitter, and know the union well, I know of VERY few plumbers/pipefitters (same union here) that ar over about 65 years old, a good %70 have died from lung related ailments from asbestos exposure, not to mention over %30 of plumbers (usually residential) have heaptitis.
I used to be a plumber and pipefitter, BEFORE I was in the plumbers/pipefitters union.
Well we had this one job, we used it to initiate newbies, imagine a charged stack (a 6 inch sewer pipe full 6 stories up) and being in the basment and having to remove a cover that would release all the contents, VERY quickly I might add,
The trick was leaning WAY over and hiding under nearby shelving and giving this bragg plug a whack with a 5lb hammer. The newbies of course didnt know this and would always ask why all the other guys were wearing raincoats.
Tampons, Diapers, Condoms, You name it all stuck to the ceiling afterwards (and it was a 10ft ceiling)
My trusty old Ultra 1 works great as a mail server at 167mhz, something about suns and sendmail have always seemed a little odd , they seem to perform significantly better that x86 counterparts. As was proof MANY years ago when a SS20 I inhereted administration of got used as an open relay 2 days after I assumed admin of it, I cant remeber how many messages but it was unreal.
IMHO, this is a MUCH better solution, while I dislike SCO and their tactics, there MAY be some validity to their point , afterall look at how many contributions have been made, its happened before in opensource where someone included copyrighted code (yes I know what they have thus far claimed cant be verified) BUT what happens if it does ?
Remove the code ! I trust RedHat to replace the code quickly and effectivley, RH has made tons of contributions to linux. The others offer to absolve financial IF there is infringing code, RH says hey dont worry well replace the code so those infringments dont apply.
I like this solution much better being a RedHat customer.
I have been a slashdotter under one name or another for 3+ years, I have read thousands upon thousands of posts.
That said I cannot remeber when a post had Sooooo little to do with the topic and was a disgusting as this one, interesting if not VERY sick story, I have a strong stomach but sheesh nasty....
The resoulution of an optical camera with good lenses and film is REMARKALBE , just for example about a month ago a picture was handed to me from the 1940's of my grandfather and his car in the background, the liscence plate is about 1/4 of a centimeter in the picture, I was thinking it would be a great picture to enlarge because of the focus and tones, ANYHOW I took a loupe (a jewlers loupe) and not only could I read the liscense plate but it was crystal clear.
Maybe it was just my eyes jumping around but did anyone else read "Chinese slicing laser" I think it was Xiaochun Li and Cheese slicing laser....had me worried there for a second

Not to mention static electricity would probably be a SERIOUS phobia
MS has had a Unix toolkit around since NT4 first hit the market, what did it do for them then ?
Cygwin has its uses but I dont see many people running production apps under it , like sendmail or bind.
I guess the new toolkit would have its uses but mostly from people like me who are really *nixphiles at heart but have to use MS platforms for work.
I finally copied DIR over and renamed it ls just so when Im in dos mode I can still type "ls" anyone else keep typing ls in a dos window ?
Youre right, WE (the US tested em postwar with different fuel diffusers and kerosene)
