  1. Re:Good job Harvard on 2007 ACM Contest Winners Announced · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was part of the team that placed 2nd in the southern california regional, and seeing how badly some of these teams did [harvard, UNC] is very disheartening, because our region only had enough schools competing to send 1 team. It is tough to know that the only team that closely beat us in the regional contest placed 12th in the world, and yet the US is still sending teams who can't solve more than 1 or 2 problems and crack the top 50.

Maybe the ACM should open up more spots based on how the regions perform at the World Finals and less on the number of schools that compete if they really want to send the best teams.

Luckily for me I dont have to worry about it anymore, but especially in the technology field why should GPA be more important than actual projects and experience?

    I disagree.

I think we can all agree that regardless of culture or nation that murder is something that should be illegal.

Sportsbetting is a service that this man's company is offering. If people choose to bet on sports, then they choose to bet on sports. They are not being forced to bet on sports, they are not being forced to bet on anything. This is not a crime anywhere but the USA (outside of nevada), and is not inherently morally wrong. There are no victims here. The US government is not supposed to be our parents telling us what to do and what not to do.

So the main difference is while legally what he is doing probably violates the law, the law is unjust and therefore cannot be compared to your murder situation.

I know, it seems so simple that Google just sends around another spider to reference their pages.

Or, instead just change the browser tags of GoogleBot to random but human identifyable names to prevent sites from displaying only to googlebot.

Instead of GoogleBot 2.0, it is "Google - Not Firefox - Bot 2.0" or "Internet Explorer via GBot v2". It would at least deter the sites that try to cheat google, and it would still identify to webmasters GoogleBot's traffic.

But with all the spam sites, I dont see why they don't take up your suggestion, and as long as they make sure the 2nd bot doens't hammer any sites (like GBot has been known to do), there is no harm for webmasters.

As if there already isn't a big enough supply of freely copyable MP3s...

When people buy music online, they do it for the convenience of a one stop shop and the fact that they are doing it legally. If you can burn your "protected" files to a CD, then any idiot can easily burn the CD from itunes, then stick it back in and reimport it in unprotected files.

I think you are thinking like the record industry and you are forgetting that kazaa and limewire have every song available in unprotected MP3 formats, so if you want people to actually shell out for music you should actually offer an upgrade.

Just think about this: If somebody downloads the MP3 off kazaa, they can connect and upload it directly to any MP3 player of their choice, since they all support MP3. But if they buy it online, they are locked into one store or the other depending on which MP3 player they own.

I think you will find that the majority of people who sell marijuana are not "criminals," they are normally just users of the drug that like to buy in bulk and sell it to offset the costs for themselves. A great deal of the marijuana sold in this country is homegrown nearby where it is sold, so there is hardly a huge smuggling and criminal network behind marijuana. It is often just one big homegrower selling it to a few friends, who further partition it down to a few more dealers, who then sell it to the common people. Although the police make a big deal out of getting the people at the top of the chain, most are hardly criminals at all, just everyday people who are willing to offset the risk of the penalties for the huge financial rewards of growing a plant in their home.

The majority of the "criminals" that the public thinks of related to drugs sell harder drugs for a much bigger profit. The kind of drugs that actually have to be smuggled around and processed in order to get them onto the street.

Why does google need to be an ISP?

I don't think google is worried about capturing a guaranteed customer base, because they already have one. If somebody is doing a web search, the plurality of users already come to google. As long as they keep adding more features, I dont think they are going to have to worry about losing these users to Yahoo/MSN.

Also, if somebody wants to switch search engines from yahoo->google, they just change the URL. But if google gets into the ISP market, what incentive is there for people already happy with their Yahoo DSL service or Verizon/MSN Service to switch? They may save a few bucks (assuming google can even field a more competitive price), but they have to go through the entire hassle of changing ISPs just so they can have google automatically be their homepage?
