Somehow I think this does greater justice to the joy of flight than the typical USB joystick, or heaven forbid, playing Flight Sim with a keyboard & mouse.

Surprising yes, but I looked into a real cockpit once and they actually had these crazy looking controls. All those hours of Flight Sim for nothing! </joke>

First things first, as offtopic and troll as that post may be, it certainly was funny, and well-written too. Matt: I can only imagine your pain.

I think the most amusing part is not simply that poor Matt thought that /. was the best means to reach Mr. Crackhead but that this Penny Arcade Child's Play thread was the best place to post it.

Truly, you have made my day a little brighter.

Hey, I'm a second year Software Engineering (yes, it's actually an approved Engg degree, NOT compsci or some crappy 2 yr. thing) in Canada. And I'm sure glad I chose Engg.

Even though it might be a lot more work (from what I've seen), even though we do calculus coming out the wazoo and still have to take lots of weird math and physics and mechanics, in the long run, it's gonna pay off.

"Engineer" still carries some weight, it's still a worthy title. Something to look forward to, and something to take pride in. Not that CompSci isn't, but only fellow "gears" can know the magic of the iron ring, that fellowship of brotherhood within our hallowed halls. It's something special, it's like being part of an exclusive club.

So good for you man. Good choice. I don't think you'll regret it. After all, only WE have a cool theme song. "We are we are we are we are..."

  7. Engineering isn't going out of style on U.S. Students Shun Computer Science, Engineering · · Score: 0
Ok, ok, maybe it's never been "in style", what with our stigma (perhaps rightly deserved) of being a rather eccentric branch of humanity.

But the world NEEDS us, and even though it might treat us like crap sometimes, Engineering is never going to go away, at least not until we discover the secret to life, the universe, and everything, which will probably only come about through Engineering in the first place (hey, philosophers can "think" all they want but somebody has to build a giant machine that can tyranically rule us...)

So, ya, enrollment in Engg might be going down, but that's probably less of the crust and more of the cream, if you know what I mean. And even though ECE is going through a rough time, it can't stay like that forever. Things were great only a few years ago, they could be great a few years from now.

And as far as outsourcing goes, we just have to make sure that we're just plain better at what we do then most of these off-shore guys. Either that or learn to like elephant polo...

  11. Re:Hate, from the bottom of my soul, to say this . on Star Trek: Enterprise in Danger of Being Cancelled · · Score: 0
Well said indeed. I must say I agree with every word of it. I'm not old enough to have enjoyed Star Trek before TNG, but I did love TNG when I discovered it about 8 years ago, and it became one of my favourite TV shows of all time.

Fortunately there were enough re-runs for me to catch every episode at some point or another. And when DS9 and Voyager came out, I watched those religiously too, and all TOS episodes I could see. And for a glorious time ST was the backdrop of my dreams and substance of my creativity as I started reading loads of ST books, watching the original movies, etc. It was good.

But as DS9 and Voyager progressed towards their inevitable ends and the last few TNG movies came out (Insurrection, Nemesis) I began to feel this growing feeling that it was... too much. Like the horse was starting to wobble on shaky legs and the riders showed no signs of slowing down. And when Enterprise came out, I rejoiced, and watched the first number of episodes with eager anticipation. But then, I started to feel like I was no longer watching ST because it was fun, but because I felt like I had too. It just wasn't the same anymore. That special dynamic of TNG that originally captured me was lost, and nobody could find it.

So I stopped watching Enterprise, stopped reading the books, and have for the last couple of years merely contented myself with TNG DVDs and assorted books about the show itself, like The Continuing Mission and the above-mentioned Biography of Gene Roddenberry. And so I agree that the series deserves to die, it needs to die. And perhaps one day, years in the future, like a phoenix from the ashes it will rise again to its former glory...

  18. fun times as office computer lackey on What is the Worst Tech Mistake You Ever Made? · · Score: 1

I think these two tie for my dumbest moments... 1) So, I'm working as a very low-level computer grunt co-op student in IS at an office, and basically my job is to install Office 2000 on every computer in the building, all day, that's it. How hard can that be to screw up, right? A trained monkey could do it... But, the ONE thing they told me beforehand was that if I was installing it on a drive partition greater than 7 Gb, things could go "screwy" due to Project because of the way paging worked in NT or something like that. So, the ONE thing I have to do is check to make sure the partition is smaller than 7 Gb before I install. After a couple weeks of never finding a computer with a big enough partition, I stop checking. Little did I know that the computers I had been checking were in the under-funded departments like Tech Pubs and HR. So, I move on to the nicer computers in the big money departments, and install Office on a whole bunch on computers during their lunch break. And, yup, installing Frontpage 2000 on a Windows NT machine on a partition greater than 7 Gb causes some interesting problems like not even booting up to Windows. Needless to say, I was very busy doing ghostcasts to restore these people's computers the rest of the day, along with most of the other co-ops. I was not exactly Mr. Popular that summer. But, hey, I didn't get fired and I learned my lesson. 2) Same place, same summer, same IS co-op lackey job. I have to call a bunch of manager-type people to ask them when I can come and install the new version of Office for them. Now, I'm in Calgary and the company has another building in Ottawa too. The phone directory does not specify which location people are at, and the company's internal phone system does not require area codes or anything. So, I call a whole bunch of upperbrass managers (including the company's most important VP) and book times to do this. Then, when I find out they're a few thousand kilometres away, I have to phone them all back and tell them "Uh... nevermind...". lol, those were good times.
