  1. Too early to tell on You Say You Want A Revolution? · · Score: 4, Insightful

Until some of us actually get some real trigger time on the Revo's controller (E3?) I think that any "opinions" about it are just a lot of hot air. Maybe "Red Steel" will be a shallow, gimmicky game. Time will tell.

  2. I don't see how this even matters anymore. on Canada's CD Tax Out of Hand? · · Score: 1

Given the proliferation of MP3 players and portable media like flash drives, the notion of carrying music files around on a little plastic disc is getting more and more silly with each passing year. I think the law sucks...it's blatently designed to squeeze more money out of consumers but it's not going to do a damn thing to slow illegal music sharing.

  3. Life sciences "temp to hire" jobs on What Do You Want in a Job Website? · · Score: 1

I'm a Microbiologist with a Master's Degree in Food Safety with several publications under my belt. When I browse the monster and careerbuilder listings, my searches are dominated by scientific recruiters and temp services. It's been said many times in this thread that recruiters are completely bogus but I don't completely agree with that statement. In my field I've found them to be very useful and they've sent me out on some great interviews (including one job offer, which I turned down because my current employer counter-offered.) However, I'm annoyed and disturbed by the growing number of "temp to hire" jobs that turn up on my searches. "Temp to hire" is a polite way of saying "you will work for us for 6 months with no benefits and no vacation and after that time we will either hire you or we will end your assignment and bring in another temp to whom we do not have to give benefits." That kind of job may be OK for some kid right out of college but the fact that I get spammed with so many of them is disturbing. If I lost my current job I might be forced to take one out of desperation, despite my level of experience.

  4. Packard Bell that I bought at SEARS! on What Was Your First Computer? · · Score: 1

First computer that I ever operated was a Commodore 64 that my parents bought for the whole family. First computer I ever opened was the IBM 25 MHz PS1 with "Intel Inside." I opened it to upgrade the modem to a 14.4 kbps. Under windows 3.1 this was no easy task. First computer I ever bought and was "mine" was a Packard Bell Pentium 150 MHz with a 14" monitor that I bought on sale at Sears. Say what you will about Packard Bell but I think it was a good little machine. I upgraded it several times until 1998 and haven't owned a "name brand" computer since then.

  5. On a Plug-in maybe on Solar Energy Becoming More Pervasive · · Score: 1

Others have said it before me but this would seemingly be worth it on a plug-in hybrid to charge the supplemental battery.

  6. university on What You Should Know When Taking a University Job? · · Score: 1

I work for a university. My department researches novel methods of food processing and packaging. In the three years I've been here the most apparent trend has been that the faculty wants to do the most possible work with the least possible funding. So many of my projects have had lofty goals that were not met because: A)the funds we had were not enough or B)the facilities we have are not properly equipped Its hardly surprising that the department I work for is reorganizing so that we're run more like a business and less like a university. The faculty here have been flying by the seat of their pants without "long term" project goals for so long that it's starting to negatively impact our work.

  7. Re:uh...no on The Shuttle Mission No One Wants · · Score: 1

If you're going to compare the loss of equipment to the loss of the crew, you need to consider that millions of dollars are invested in every crew to get them educated and trained for the mission. If this number seems high remember that most crew members hold advanced science and engineering degrees. On top of that, many of them are pilots. Cheap? no.

  8. Wow that's really gonna hurt on MP3 Download Prices to Rise? · · Score: 5, Funny

If they raise prices they'll be even less competitive with the price of $0.00 that I currently pay per song.

  9. Friday nights on 'Star Trek: Enterprise' Cancelled? · · Score: 1

I don't know about other markets...but in Chicago it airs on Friday nights... ...meaning I never watch it as much as I'd like to (no, I don't have TiVo) Its an entertaining show but I think I'd just like to see it go away. I'd rather see the "Trek" universe move forward rather than dwelling on backstory.

  10. What about music that's not worth saving on The Music Man · · Score: 1

This guy's stated mission implies that he downloads EVERYTHING including crappy pop music from Britney and Ashlee and their kind. I don't think it would be a huge loss if western civilization ended and that music was lost.

  11. First volunteers, now employees? on Electronic Arts Facing Possible Class Action Lawsuit · · Score: 1

Oh, EA...will you ever learn? I'm referring, of course, to the recent incident in which ex-volunteers from Ultima Online sued EA and won.

  12. I'm sorry, but this article is absolute bullshit. on Who's Behind the Shower Curtain? · · Score: 5, Insightful

First off I'll state that I'm a microbiologist. Saying that two bacterium come from the same "genetic family" is totally meaningless. Take E. coli K12 and E. coli 0157:H7 for example. They're the same SPECIES. K12 is harmless while 0157 will give you bloody diarrhea and could potentially kill you. I hate reading crap like this. It helps ignorant people justify their decision to disinfect EVERYTHING, thus inhibiting childrens' development of robust immune systems.

  13. Re:Just one question? on New Darth Vader Costume Revealed in upcoming DVDs · · Score: 1

  14. As if people can't get around the block on China Blocks Typepad, Prompts Weblog Blackout · · Score: 3, Insightful

I've got to think that anyone with the will and some time would easily be able to bypass the blockage, either by using underground ISPs, satellite, or other means.

  15. Opt-Out of the Phantom Beta? on Infinium Labs Threatens HardOCP Again · · Score: 1

A long, long time ago, I filled out a Beta application for the Phantom. I don't remember what info it asked for, but I do remember that the thing read like a job application. Did anyone else fill this out? I want to contact them and tell them to delete my application. Anyone have any ideas as to how this might be accomplished?

  16. I disagree, ST6 was outstanding on Star Trek: Enterprise in Danger of Being Cancelled · · Score: 1

5 sucked. 2 is the best though.

  17. WHY is this being entrusted to a newbie director!? on Hitchhiker's Guide Film Reports · · Score: 3, Insightful

WHY!? For the love of god. I've never heard of Garth Jennings. Its not like this guy's even worked his way up to director. IMDB does not have him listed as crew or writer for any major motion pictures. I hate to be negative but I'm truly anticipating disappointment from this film.

  18. Apple put up an official site on iPod Jr. Rumors Become More Substantial · · Score: 1
