OK, why is everyone coming down so hard on DC. I think they had a great idea and a good business model, they just didn't go about it in the right way. Why doesn't slashdot layoff of DC a little bit and let them go about their thing (making money, yes someone is actually trying to make money here). Also, keep in mind that some ppl may actually like what DC is trying to do for them.
AMD and Intel need to adopt a naming standard for their processors. Remember 386 and 486, you knew exactly what you were getting. Sure, things are a lot more advanced, but someone should be able to think up a way to create naming based on speed, cache size, etc. Any ideas?

Since the site isn't working, here's my thoughts:
One of the local TV news stations here in Central PA has done some "Office Olympics". The events usually include stuff like office chair relay races and well, you get the idea. Anyway, that would be my idea of Tech olympics, partially anyway, because techs spend a lot of time in the office.
This comment isn't about the article per say. Ok, it was a good article, however, why do things like this get posted? I submitted an article about some Windows ME bugs that never made it. I guess that stuff just isn't important. Maybe because its actually useful information that someone might care about.
I read the page about hacking the tivo that is linked to in the article. Mostly what that page talked about was adding another harddrive, or upgrading the current drive. Anyway, I don't see why anyone would want to add another drive. Why not just spend the extra money and buy the large capacity tivo. If you wanted to hack the unit, you would have to pay extra money for the second hd anyway.
C'mon ppl. It's just business. Sure it doesn't make sense for them to be charging 2 different prices for the same item. So here are a couple of theories speculating as to why they did it:
1. They are trying to scam you and steal your money
2. They really are trying to do a marketing test
3. It was a fuck-up/type-o
OK, here are some responses to the above:
1. Amazon wouldn't try to scam anyone. First of all, they are refunding your money. Secondly, Amazon is too big to have to worry about all kinds of class action lawsuits against them. They don't want to scam you.
2. Sure, this actually makes sense. Amazon tries to figure out what prices best suit their products. If they sell at price A do they make more money than at price B, even though B is a higher price. They want to see if ppl are being turned away from their site because the prices are too high. So, they refund the difference, then later set their prices to reflect the research results.
3. I doubt it was a screw up. Why would only some ppl be charged less than others. I would think they are pulling from a single database, so prices are across the board. This prevents #1 from happening as well, so everything is fair.
I need an e-mail program to tell me I'm pissed off? That's a new one. I think it would annoy me more if I saw my computer pop up a box that says, "I'm sorry, but you may want to rethink this message." It would make more sense to filter flames that are incoming.
Agreed. They are using their weight (and a successful lawsuit) to basically bully the big "offenders" around. They are attacking the universities because they have the big networks. Let's see them go after some corporation that doesn't actually have napster blocked on their network.
I don't think its right that they are basically telling universities what to do, and dragging them into Napster's legal battles. I hope the Universities can make their own decisions and aren't freightened by legal tactics.

I wonder where the presidential candidates stand on issues like this? Have heard a lot about foreign policy and campaign reform, but nothing about the internet. Wouldn't an on-line chat with Gore or Bush be cool, then all the geeks could get the lowdown on tech related issues.
Q: Mr. Gore, what do you think about the DeCSS ruling? Did you even hear about it?
A: Uhhhh, I like invented the internet.
No seriously, these issues need to be brought up for the coming elections. Good debate material.
This may be redundant so pardon me if it is, otherwise:
What does the MPAA stand for? Do you think the MPAA endorses any movies that have anything to do with the following topics:
1. Freedom of speech
2. Censorship
3. Patriotic spirit and the ideals of the US
Probably not right? No f***ing way man! C'mon, they are the biggest freaking backstabing two-faced f***ers of them all. Geez, I'm willing to waste some karma for that comment, but I think its true. The MPAA needs to wise up a little. They can't stop DeCSS completely. There will always be e-mail, then ftp, ng's, etc. If someone needs the code, its out there.
C'mon ppl. Technology is moving so fast that patents have very little value anymore. Sure, they give engineers bragging rights, "Ha! I did it first." But other than that, I think that patents have become pretty meaningless, considering all the lawsuits over patents.
Really, you may think this is flamebait, but it is my opinion.
I'm impressed. I'd have to say that as a Linux user, I think that QNX can give any distro a run for the money. It seems to me like the OS will be pretty mature from the release point on. It comes with a lot of apps and everything is fully featured. The DVD player is definately a plus. Can't wait to see this thing mature a bit.
Cancel those DSL orders! I wonder how the new technology will compare to other technologies, pricewise and feasibility-wise. I hope it can give DSL a run for the money. DSL is a great technology, but this sounds pretty cool. Things just keep getting better. I guess it'll be awhile until the technology will reach consumerville, at least my neighborhood anyway.
I think the movie is just a great way to top it all off. Magie will speak, other than "Homer", Smithers will pronounce he is "truly" gay, we will find out what state Springfield is in. It will just be a great way to end the whole Simpson's saga. I'll be sad to see it go, but if they make a movie I really think that'll be the end of it.
Yes, its strange how it the website boasts being able to sinc with Windows or Linux, but the PC requirements are:
The bundled QuickSync software in Agenda synchronizes Outlook from the unit. QuickSync is compatible with any PC operating system that can run Outlook including Windows 95, 98, 2000, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows Millennium. QuickSync requires 2MB of hard drive space and 16MB RAM.
Doesn't say anything about Linux there, and...can Linux run Outlook??? I didn't think so...maybe Star Office compatibility will come soon:-)
OK, really, who cares about this??? Just us geeks, right? If you take into consideration the complexity of the statements made by the nominees, no one is going to take time to read it all. Really, it interests me because I own a domain name, but I don't have the time to research all the candidates. I think the issues should be made more simple and clearer so that a broader audience can understand and possibly take interest.
It's good that/. is covering the elections, but who else is covering it. Please, if anyone has links to other sites with information about the elections, post them. The more info, the better.
I really don't think that there will be enough response to this, even from the geek crowd, yet sooooo many people use the net that its not even funny.
Well, it seems like everyone is smacking MS down pretty hard here. I actually think its a good thing for MS and Linux.
Good thing for MS: MS will get to put software into the Linux world. So what? Well, now with the apparant MS breakup, the applications division is "totally oblivious" to the OS division. Therefore, the apps division can port stuff like Office into Linux without any "conflict of interest", so to speak. Therefore, they get there apps out to all the geeks. No if they will only make the stuff they port open source, yeah right:-(
Good for Linux community: It will create a little competition in the Linux world. This could be a good thing. Take Star Office for example, Sun might have reason to make their Star Office program a little less bloated if MS Office were to come into the picture. Basically, competition drives productivity and advancement. Without it there will be no drive for developers to create decent apps for such a great OS!
It's all just Thousand Island salad dressing. Don't be fooled!

There's another poll at the article.
Q: Will you buy Windows ME?
A: 8% Yes
92% No

Let's see the MPAA get DeCSS off of FreeNet!
It would be cool if it had an LCD interface, or is that for the user to add on their own?
