MRAM could be a fun thing. Virii get embedded in the memory and stay in there FOREVER, continually wreaking havoc. Also, hackers could embed flags in your memory so that every time you boot up they know it. Geesh, if it stays in there until the computer says, "erase it" it may be wise to erase every time the machine goes down or boots up so that nasty stuff doesn't stick in there. Catch my drift, or am I way off?
1. I buy domain name first, I own it for good and do what I want with it for as long as I want. First come/First serve.
That won't solve the problem of cybersquatters, but this isn't communism. Business is business.
I own one domain name...dicklong.com (no site yet) because it is relavent to my personal name. So does this mean I would win or lose if some porn site wanted to battle it out with me?
Actually, its really a good idea. Consider the fact that as software ages, it slowly becomes bloatware. Especially apps such as word processors, spreadsheets, stuff along those lines. Noone wants to run a piece of bloated software, especially if the older version did everthing that you needed it too. Who needs Star Office when we have vi? Of course, games should be as bloated as possible to provide the maximum sensory intake overload!
So how is input entered? Is there tiny keyboard to go with it, and a special dialing wand? OR, does it have something to do with that little wheel on the right?
Q1: How many Linux users are experienced with using Windows?
Q2: How many Windows users are experienced with using Linux?
To me, the answers to these questions are pretty obvious. My guess would be:
A1: 99%
A2: 1%
Just a guess, but I bet Fred Moody is in the A2 percentage. Anyone who uses Linux is a "zealot" for the very reason that it IS the superior OS (over doze). I use Linux and I love it. I also use doze, and I think that it has its pluses, but that Linux (or any Unix for that matter) will always be better (in some regards)[purely a matter of opinion]. I can truly say that BOTH OS's DO have their pluses AND minuses.
Anyway, what I wanted to get at is:
1. Any Linux user that smacks down doze, is quick to be flamed (see attachment).
2. Any Doze user that smacks down Linux is viewed cautiously.
Sure, the avid Linux users speak their minds here on/. But who ever saw a "Windows 2000 sucks" article posted on zdnet or abcnews??? If so, please point them out to me!
If only Reno read/. she would know the opinions of the important ppl. The ones who actually care about this and are affected by it. But, its not like our opinions matter, we're only the public, we're only a bunch of reject kids that this damn system is target at.
I don't think the problem should be shrinking the whole X system down, it should be redesigning X completely for their specific needs. Maybe if someone concentrates on redesigning it we can all benefit by a less bloated X system. Rock on!
So, exactly how much are song royalties anyway? I have no idea. Is it something that differs depending on what band it is, what song it is or what record label it is??? I really have no idea and would appreciate any comments on this.
OK, I don't think the artists are hurting because of napster. It's been said before, some musicians actually think napster helps promote their albums. Even if they didn't sell any albums because of napster, fans would still pay $100 a pop to see certain musicians live in concert. And for the less popular musicians, it only gives them a chance to get their music out there for everyone to hear. Let's face it, the radio doesn't play 'unpopular' music.
If I purchase something, is it not MINE and soley MINE becase I have paid the money for it. This should mean that I can do anything I want with it.
It's kinda sad that if I buy a DVD, I could get sued for trying to play it on my Linux system, even though the DVD is MINE! It's MINE I should be able to do whatever I want with it because I own it. If I want to use it as a frisby, that's my right. What happened to freedom in this country??? The large corporation made us pay for it.
Why does the little guy always get stomped on? How can any large corporation make any money without the little guy anyway?
Unfortunately for large corporations, the internet is too powerful and too vast to control. In other words, THEY BETTER GIVE CONSUMERS WHAT THEY WANT OR THEY WILL BE SCREWED! They could be making a lot of money on comercial Linux DVD players right now, but they are missing out. Sorry, too late, DeCSS is free, I'll just download that instead of paying $50 for your comercial product (if a comercial player was ever released).
I think there is a big difference. Mainly, the users of Hotmail are informed about the tagline at the bottom of the message when they sign up for the service. With the deja service, the posters aren't informed. So, if I post from news.isp.net, my post will show up with the deja links, on the deja site. Therefore, deja users will be viewing my post in an altered form, without my permisions to make the alterations.
No one is forcing you to read/. either. If you don't like/. and you don't like Linux, then don't waste your time with either.
What i DON'T think is news and what I DON'T like is "Slashdot" bringing up an article about another sites revenue model/stream. I don't particularly like a "News for Nerds" site shoving linux down my throat constantly. So what is so hard about a Discussion and Product comparison site linking to different discussions and different products? Atleast its not all linux all day.
Well, unfortunately, all you codeheads are beating up on X pretty hard. I happen to think that X is a good thing for Unix/Linux because it is the only chance to break free from the shackles of doze, and bring the things a little closer to Linux world domination.
I don't code, so I can't say much about the nitty gritty, but I think X is just a good chance to change the computing world a little. It makes Unix more user friendly. I know that all of geekdom whishes to keep Unix in its own secluded server-based territory. However, one day I would like to see Unix or Linux on everyone's box here in the office, and schools, etc. I think X is the key that will get things there.
Linux needs commercialism to help in its development and help the OS to grow. I want to see Linux on 90% of the world's computers in the future, not doze!
This won't happen unless industry gets into it. Period.
This all doesn't make any sense. Why would a band like Metallica that makes millions of dollars a year even care about royalties when they know that they aren't losing any money and people are still buying their albums. It would make more sense for a smaller band that depends on royalties to care about such a thing.
What I mean to say is...Is it possible that the record company put Metallica up to this? Did they target Metallica because of their big name? It just doesn't make any sense. As far as I know...Metallica has always done their best to please their fans. I've never heard a bad Metallica record or have seen a bad show.
Sorry about replying too my own post, but I have another comment... I always thought true artists were more interested in pleasing their fans with good music/art, not with monetary compensation. Thats what this is all about...money, right?

There should only be ONE rule:
1. I buy domain name first, I own it for good and do what I want with it for as long as I want. First come/First serve.
That won't solve the problem of cybersquatters, but this isn't communism. Business is business.

1. Find small university with Technical Sounding name that noone has ever heard of.
:P
2. You are going to review Carnivore whether you like it or not.
3. Here are your results in case you forget to give us a good review.
I'm really not paranoid. I would like the FBI to pick a credible school (i.e. MIT). However, Penn State should be their choice since it is the best

I nominate CmdrTaco!
OK, so when does the Linux client come out?
So how is input entered? Is there tiny keyboard to go with it, and a special dialing wand? OR, does it have something to do with that little wheel on the right?

It would rock to hook all up all the supercomputers around the world into a distributed network. So, a distributed network of Beowolf clusters!
If only Reno read /. she would know the opinions of the important ppl. The ones who actually care about this and are affected by it. But, its not like our opinions matter, we're only the public, we're only a bunch of reject kids that this damn system is target at.
QNX got it down to 1.44M; why not make X smaller?

DVD? Now that's another issue.

So if I boycott buying music from anyone in RIAA, and Napster is shut down, where do I get any new music?
CRANK UP THE RADIO AND GET OUT THE BLANK CASSETTES, BABY!
Good point.

I agree with everything here. However, I don't think that Unix necessarily "sucks". We need a poll:
Unix Sucks
Unix doesn't suck
Blue

I think their service sucks. I can see how their service is really innovative, but its just not cool. I think I would be really pissed if links magically appeared in all of my usenet posts, especially to products that I do not endorse.

Nope, it was Bill Gates.
