Maybe I'm too cynical. It's MS's game to lose. If they get enough countries to vote yes, then it becomes a standard regardless of glaring technical issues and they win. If they cause all the voting to be stalled (or go 'round and 'round) long enough that a majority of people start using their unofficial standard, they win. The only way, in my opinion, for MS to lose is for countries to hurry to a "no" vote and kick them out of the game. Or at least force them to the sidelines for a while. It's probably an overly simplistic view of the whole process, but my caffeine level is low.

why should students not get good grades for the same effort and relative achievement compared to other majors?

Because when a student goes up against other students for a job in a scientific field, they're not competing with students from a less demanding field. I couldn't care less if everybody that went into Communications got an "A" since I'm not competing with them. As the scientific tests get made easier, it will be more difficult for future employers to use their grades as some indicator of where they actually stand (whether they should or not is arguable). And that doesn't even touch the fact that they may be getting taught in a way that discourages critical thinking and encourages rote memorization.

Disclaimer: I am not a US citizen, and don't know how MPAA or its rating system works.

If anything the ESRB rating provides more information into why a game has a certain rating when compared to MPAA ratings. If a game is rated "M", I can look at the sidebar and see why it's "M." For movies, I have to take a best guess. Further, the MPAA system is more fluid over time (movies that are rated "R" these days probably wouldn't've been able to be released 50 years ago), and nobody bats an eye when scenes are cut to achieve a different rating. I'm inclined to look toward the money when figuring out why politicians are outraged, and my guess is that California State Senators get some money Hollywood that allows them to be more flexible when examining the "artistic integrity" of movies.
