So the FCC is going to replace my mythtv box with a new system? Are they planning to do this just after they confiscate all the firearms from the public?
This is just another nail in the coffin of PSTN service. The days of land line phones is coming to an end. Over the past few years more people are electing not to have standard telephone lines installed in their homes, instead they are using cell phnones exclusively or using IP based telephones over broadband connections. The local bell companies had better start finding another source of revenue. Land lines will disappear just like pay phones have gone virtually extinct. Same thing happened with long distance providers, like AT&T. With cell phones providing free roaming and long distance standard long distance charges are something many people don't see anymore. The only question now is how long will the local bell companies survive and how will the adapt to the changes.
The only reason for all this spam is that it still pays.
You have clearly identified the problem. Disrupt the money stream and spam would go away. The best way to disrupt the money stream is at the source, the idiots that actually buy the crap pushed in spam.
How do you stop the idiots from buying spam crap? Easy, send email to all users, those that click on the contents and attempt to buy the bait are identified, tracked down, computers are confiscated, and they are barred from the Internet for life. After this is done a few times the number of people that buy stuff from spam will reach a point that the spammers won't get any money no matter how many messages they send. Choke the money off at the source and the spammers will be forced to find some other way to cheat people.
If this is not implemented then the arms race will continue and it will never end.
I'm waiting to recieve a patent on the auto patent generator. It is based on the old elisa code. It churns out randome patents that sound pretty good. At least good enough to get past the patent geeks who seem to approve just about everything. So far 1.5 million patents have been generated and submitted. Now it's time to sit back and wait for all of them to be approved.
It's all fun and games until you realize that Microsoft controls the code and the first virus hits that takes control of your BRAIN!
User: Uh, tech support, I have OUCH a problem. I keep poking OUCH my self in the eye. This started happening after I OUCH played that new came that OUCH interfaces with your brain.
Tech support: Yes sir, you have the Three Stooges Virus. You did not update your system did you? The patch was out three weeks ago.
User: OK, so I have a OUCH virus how do OUCH I get rid of it? OUCH
Tech support: This requires a complete reboot. Do you have one of our home difibulators? You will need one to stop your heart and then restart it after 30 seconds. If that does not work you will need to reload the OS. You did make backups didn't you.
User: Uh, backups? Of my brain? OUCH Uh no, I don't OUCH have any backups. OUCH
Tech support: Well sir that requires a complete reinstall. We sell a reinstall kit.....
A true cashless society can not exist as long as politicians are around. How else are politicians going to get paid? They can not allow a paper trail back to them from the various lobby groups that routinely buy/sell/trade politicians.
Build a mythtv box with HDTV support. Many many people have done this. While I have not moved to HDTV yet (and probably won't for many many years) a home built DVR system such as mythtv works extremely well. So well that I have not watched live TV for almost a year. It gets recorded, commercial flagged, and then watched when I want to watch it. Did I mention the automatic commercial skipping? While that is not 100% accurate all the time it is good enough to eliminate the bulk of commercials and the rest I skip past in 30 second increments. And it was not that difficult to setup.
Please keep paying that price. It helps drive down the cost of systems for the rest of us using those non-dominate operating systems. I really appreciate that.
How do we really know a bomb did not get on a plane? They could be spreading the "it was a software bug" story to cover the fact that they detected a freakin bomb but lost it before the guy reading the machine could react.
Guess we will have to wait a few days to see if one goes down.
But how does getting your logo known translate to sales? Seriously I don't think the emperor has any clothes. Ads do not get consumer to buy those products. People buy the stuff they find on the shelves in the stores when they are shopping. They don't run out after watching an ad to buy that particular product.
And they can enforce this on the DVR I built how? They might get that in place on DVRs you purchase but not on a computer that serves as a DVR. There will be ways around it. As a matter of fact, if they put broadcast flags in the shows clearly identifying the commercials it will be so much easier to skip the commercials than it is now. I would actully welcome such flags.
Are people really pushed to buy a product based on ads they are exposed to? Personally I have become pretty good at ignoring billboards and ads in the paper. Same with ads on web pages. As for the TV, the DVR skips them for me so I rarely see any ads on the TV anymore. And back in the dark ages when I did not have a DVR I would read or do something else during the commercial breaks. I know lots of money is spent on advertising but just how effective is it? Or should I ask, how many people run out a buy stuff because the saw an ad for it? I'm thinking the emperor has no clothes. Or in this case that the ad agencies have nothing to really sell.
What ads? I use a DVR that auto skips commercials. I don't watch live TV anymore. Everything is recorded and commercial flagged. Besides not having to suffer watching commercials repeatedly I save lots of time by eliminating 15 to 18 minutes from every hour show.
Damn spammers hiring researchers to figure out better ways to get spam delivered. Don't they teach ethics anymore?
This also qualifies as a DUH! Of course if you send spam that looks like it comes from someone you know it has a better chance of getting through.

I think this is a badly-titled article.
You are correct. The actual title should be:
"Help me win the bet, I can get at least two thousand users to download and install a root kit by posting an article to slashdot."

If I were the guy who built the original primary mirror, I wouldn't want the world to know...
Wasn't it Perkin-Elmer that built the primary mirror?
Further Drivers licences are often used for things that have nothing to do with driving.
Boarding commercial airliners....
And these same scientists hope to one day have sex with a live human.
Some how, I don't think it is going to happen.

Damn lazy wire heads!

I thought the French have been testing cashless socieity for some time now. Isn't that what all the riots were about earlier this year?
A true cashless society can not exist as long as politicians are around. How else are politicians going to get paid? They can not allow a paper trail back to them from the various lobby groups that routinely buy/sell/trade politicians.
But if you cough of sneeze you erase and format your systems hard drives. Or worse you launch the missles.
As for the input side of it a cold would lock you out of the system as would any good hot wings.
Some how I don't think they have thought this one all the way through.
This does not make a lick of sense.

Tell that to the 10 people that recieved full body cavity searches that just happened to be in line at the time.

I've still got a bad taste in my mouth
Your doing it wrong.
