    The Holocaust wasn't aimed at the rich. But the purges of Stalin and Mao were. They killed plenty of rich people. My wife's laoye (maternal grandfather) owned a furniture factory in Beijing, and was quite prosperous. He was shot in the back of the head in 1949.

    No. The One Percenters who will ride those planes simply don't care about you shitfolk.

    Concorde proved that there aren't enough one-percenters to make supersonic aircraft economically viable. People want cheap fares and direct flights. Even most rich people aren't willing to pay a thousand dollars an hour for a quicker flight.

    Most rich people I know are cheapskates. That's how they got to be rich.

    1. Due to extreme amounts of government and institutional red tape, nothing gets done. Nothing. All those stories you read of brain implants? Basically never going to happen.

    It will happen, just not in America. In China, stuff gets done.

    America will take at least 30 years to build a high speed train from SF to LA, at a cost of $100-300B.
    China built the high speed train from Shanghai to Beijing (twice the distance from SF to LA) in 3 years, at a cost of $32B.

    Unless you are both wealthy and conservative, you didn't have Trump. Trump had you.

    I don't think so. Trump's signature issues are that he is anti-immigrant and anti-trade. The wealthy benefit disproportionately from globalization and cheap immigrant labor. Not many billionaires were pro-Trump. The only one I can think of is Peter Thiel.

    The solution, as always, is to never use Facebook...

    ... or if that is too extreme, then do what I do: Treat Facebook as a read-only medium. I occasionally check in on my friends, but I never post anything myself. I do the same on LinkedIn, which is even more ethically challenged than Facebook.

    How often does that happen?

    Then it's back to Apple, (or at least to a third-party shop), for an undoubtedly expensive repair job.

    Or you could, you know, learn to use a soldering iron.

    Tell me again - why in hell would I want a new Apple laptop?

    Somehow, I doubt if you were going to buy one anyway.

    Steve Jobs always wanted Macs to be appliances that the user could not tinker with or modify.

    That's how my wife treats her MBP. Every few years she starts complaining about it running too slow or the disk is full. So I buy her a new one, which is okay with me because it is still cheaper than jewelry or a vacation in Paris.

    She just got a new 15", and she loves it, especially the new task bar (which has color!). Hopefully, Apple won't upgrade it again for a while.

    ... and MI6/GCHQ cannot legal spy inside the UK. So the normal way around this is for the CIA to spy on British citizens, while MI6 spies on Americans, and then they just swap information.

    General Tso's chicken is about as Chinese as KFC.

    Most Americanized Chinese food is terrible. Even if you go to an authentic family-run Chinese restaurant, they will often have a separate menu for non-Chinese, with extra starch, grease, salt, and sugar, since they assume that is what you want. You have to specifically ask for the "Chinese menu". Just say "Qing gei wo zhongwen caidan". Oh, and the menu will be in Chinese, so you will need to learn to read hanzi.

    History is repeating itself. Xi Jinping is purging his political opponents, mostly by accusing them of corruption, and promoting a personality cult. It will be interesting to see if he steps down at the end of his term in office, or whether he stays on "for the good of the nation".

    This is not just about copyrights. It is mostly about contract law. Have you read the purchase contract or license? No? Me neither. So anything either of have to say about this matter is pointless and meaningless.

    Maybe Google should just get out of the censorship business, rather than trying to use their ad service to micromanage what people see and hear. Fake news is not good, but it is not Google's job to "correct" it. By feeding the conspiracy theorists, they are just making the problem worse.

    Google Glass failed because they were lame.

    They also failed because, at $1500, they were way overpriced. The UI sucked. The battery life sucked. The capabilities also sucked. People often thought that Google Glasses were recording everything they did, when they actually did not have the ability to do that.

    If you don't think people use violence outside of junior high school, then you probably don't get out much.

    Of course life outside of JHS has violence. That doesn't mean resorting to violence is the "right thing to do". Violence is almost never the correct choice.

    Children that are bullied are the most likely to later be bullies themselves, especially if they see that the system does nothing to protect victims.

    There is literally no point in going through life as a perpetual victim and every reason to teach kids to stick up for themselves

    If your kid comes to you for help, the worst thing you can say is "I am not going to do shit to help you, you are on your own, so use violence." That is a terrible life lesson, because real life beyond junior high school is nothing like that.

    Pointing out something is unfair is "ignorant"?

    Is the World Series unfair? The pennant goes to the team that wins the most games, not to the team the scores the most total runs.

    The Electoral College was designed to encourage candidates to appeal to the entire nation, rather than just running up the score in their geographic base.

    Bullying isn't protected by free speech

    Unless it involves specific realistic threats, online "bullying" is protected speech. There is no law against insults and teasing. You have no right to not be offended. If you don't like it, then close the browser tab.

    Nonsense. Victims do not "deserve" to be bullied because they are cowards. "Courage" has little to do with it. Bullies pick on kids that are smaller, younger and weaker. "Standing up to them" may work in the movies, but it almost never works that way in real life, where a punch to a bully often means more torment that ever.

    "Profit" and "marginal profit" are not the same thing. Lower profit will hurt everyone that has AAPL in their pension fund. Lower marginal profits will hurt anyone that contributes to Apple's NRE, including all their American engineers and designers.

    It depends on how far the "bullying" goes. Actual threats are not protected speech. Also, putting a stop to bullying does not have to involve law enforcement. If I heard from another parent that my kid was humiliating or insulting another kid online, I would put a stop to it, regardless of whether it is illegal.

    But mostly kids need to learn about the "off" button.

    The corporations have been "spying" on you for decades and you never gave a shit then. Why start now?

    When corporations spy on me, it means I am more likely to see advertisements for products I like.

    When governments spy on me, it means men with guns are more likely to kick down my front door at 3am.

    I can control which corporations I interact with. I have far less control over my country of citizenship.

    Freenet is for the technological elite, not for normal people. If it ever becomes popular, it will be easy to squash by making it a crime to have the software installed on your device, or to forward messages. Governments can infiltrate Freenet just as easily as they infiltrated TOR. Most likely, they already have.
