    It's not quite as straightforward as that, but there's a valid objection there, and I take the point.

    Of course, the real problem is the idea that users manually editing a 32MB file on a regular basis is at all a sensible idea.

    It's rather hard to do a successful SQL injection attack against a prepared statement. It's not trivial to validate your inputs so as to avoid an SQL injection attack without them. That is IMO the number one reason for using them.

    I should perhaps have been clearer. I didn't mean that you should start him on a 6-month project. Rather I was arguing against the view that games nowadays are so complex that there's no point trying to write one.

    I'm not sure that mods are the best way to start programming either. That one-line change you talk about probably required understanding hundreds of lines of someone else's code.

    Then I right-click the link to the webapp and choose "Open in new window". In fact, as a browser user, the number one feature I'd like to add is an item in that popup menu: "Open in this tab".

    Why not? "Game" isn't synonymous with "First person shooter". An intelligent teenager can learn enough to make games better than half the stuff on Miniclip in less than 6 months.

    It's currently at #2 for active subscriptions according to mmogchart.com. Unless you define "mainstream mmorpgs" to mean "WoW" I think it qualifies.

    When I left a (small) company in which I'd had some sysadmin duties, I changed the root passwords to randomly generated ones and wrote them down for my replacement. It was the easiest way of guaranteeing that I wouldn't remember them.

    Some people think blank keyboards are great for forcing you to touch-type, but others don't want to be challenged that way :-).

    And others keep a QWERTY layout of keys but use a Dvorak keymap, to drive anyone who borrows their computer insane. (I'm not that evil: I just use a Spanish keymap with a British keyboard).

    You can't win against an agent following the Nash equilibrium for a game.

    Depends on the game. This is probably due in poker due to the symmetry (although I don't play enough to know what asymmetries there are).
